How To Make a Milk Tart | South African Desserts

Hi guys! Today l’m baking a traditional milk tart. This is the 3rd video in my 5 Most Popular South African Desserts series. You can have it both hot or cold, but l personally like it warm with a nice cup of tea 😊.

Ingredients:
2 x 200g Tennis biscuits
2 x 1/4 cup melted butter
750ml milk
4 large eggs, separated
2 tsp butter
1 stick cinnamon
25-40 ml milk
2 tsp custard powder
1 Tbs cornstarch
1 Tbs flour
A pinch of salt
1/2 cup sugar
Some ground cinnamon to sprinkle on top

Looks really lovely. Traditionally, real melktert has a different flaky crust made from "skilferkors" - not sure what it is called in either your mother tongue or in the foreign one.

While I love tradition, do you know that epapa/uputhu is not African, but Mexican, and brought to SA via KZN in the 1500s by Portuguese seafarers?

You did well but it's not the traditional way. Real South African milk tart traditionally will be with your own crust and not crushed biscuits.

I would try both I’m sure it’s up to your own taste not many people would be concerned about the ‘traditional’ way as long as it tastes good
