@@sploompdoomper She's just honest. I understand that some people may not be used to receiving constructive criticism, or they're used to the compliment sandwich, but if you begin creative work in any industry, you'll need to learn to thrive with it. Managers and editors have little time, so they'll give you what's needed to move onto the next stage, which is usually just constructive criticisms, i.e. "This could be improved if you did X because X." These critiques will help you learn, understand and - if you learn to not take it personally - grow. Once done, then it's time for celebration. What you don't want is someone patting you on the back all the time. This leaves you with nothing to improve on and no way to grow. These people either don't truly care about your work, or they're not knowledgeable enough to provide healthy and accurate feedback. Neither are going to be good mentors to you. You also don't want someone who only gives destructive criticism, i.e. "I hate this." Without providing any explanations or means to improve, these people will not help you progress in your career. You're dealing with someone who has ego problems, and this is really not worth your time and health.

Disagree with everything except the last point. It seems pretty important to have that information in the corner and how an outfit is supposed to look in the same pose so it's easier to stay consistent
@hagaiitz Жыл бұрын
I actually think Jackie has a good point there. When you show the same character in different clothes, you're basically showing another side to their personality. The character probably feels different in those clothes, so it probably shifts their body language.
@cooljulep Жыл бұрын
if you think through her reasoning, it makes perfect sense. the logo and extra information could literally be put on another page. portfolios are not made up of singular illustrations. the portfolio is supposed to showcase your skills, first and foremost. if for whatever reason the genius behind the portfolio can’t put their info in the email or somewhere else in the application, but the art is big and incredible and yada yada, the employer will ask for the juicy details of the… character’s name, and whether this is a character sheet (yeah the title “character sheet” definitely needs to be there because how else will the employer know it’s a character sheet. someone who’s probably experienced and has looked through other applications. i wonder), and don’t forget the dingy logo in the corner!! Anyway as for the clothes identical poses, this is an example of a beginner portfolio. Meaning, this character reference sheet is probably not being used nor will ever be used in actual animation. the illustration(s) just has to show enough range and skill, not to make a perfect and functional character reference that will never be used. anyone with an art program can duplicate a pose and draw different clothes on it, that doesn’t show range.
@egg62 Жыл бұрын
In an actual production, that information would be in a separate turnaround. Since this is for a portfolio, it should be optimised to show your skills as much as possible. She's right in saying it would be a good opportunity to show you can pose the character.
