This is a how to video on creating bitcoin paper wallets. While there are other more secure ways of creating paper wallets for bitcoin, the method that I show you in this video is moderatly safe. Safe enough to store decent amounts of BTC. I don't think I would reccomend storing more than a few hundred dollars worth of BTC in these paper wallets, but they can still serve as a convienient option for handling your Bitcoin. In the following videos, I will show you how to create much more secure Papers wallets for your BTC using an open source program called, Bitcoin Armory. But until then, enjoy learning how to make a Bitcoin Paper Wallet!

I sent a dollar to the address at 4:37 in case someone wants to practice sweeping the money into their wallet. That's how you move bitcoin back to a cell phone wallet from a paper wallet.

Use a "Dumb Printer" when you print for extra security. Make sure the printer is NOT connected to the internet and that the printer doesn't store recently printed items.

Excellent video ! Just to add some additional security : Be careful when printing from some relatively modern printers, as these sometimes have memory, retaining printed information, with all the obvious security implications. Still on printing : It's also advisable to print it using a laser printer ('burning' the images on paper), as opposed to an inkjet printer (putting ink on paper, possibly causing blotting and greater danger of smudging, and less resilient against damp etc). One can also strongly consider laminating a printout.

The printer has your crypto private key once you print it, and not clear its memory. Anyone with access to your computer and/or your printer can therefore simply retrieve it from its memory.

I was (originally, and still am) talking about the actual unencrypted private key which you just printed -- that's the whole point to my post. The printer does not need your digital wallet's password, because it *_already has_* your private key in it's memory -- as would anyone with access to your computer and/or printer, without needing to access your digital wallet. In simple language : Once you printed it, and that private key is right there in your printer's memory, you may as well write it down and leave it on your desk for all to see. Added to that, anyone directly or via Internet, that can access your printer, can copy your private key. No need to access your digital wallet. = No need for password.

"Bitcoins are not stored in your wallet. Bitcoin transactions are stored in the globally distributed ledger called the blockchain (not to be confused with the website blockchain.info). When someone sends you bitcoins he signs off ownership of the coins to your address. That transaction is recorded in the blockchain. For you to be able to then spend those coins you need the private key behind your address and THAT is what is stored in your wallet."
@TsuruchiBrian

All wallets exist whether you generate them or not. Generating a wallet just means computing a public/private key pair. You can send money to the public key/address of a wallet that was never generated by anyone, but then that money is just gone forever. Only sending money to addresses (or public keys) that someone knows the private key for will allow that money to be spent again.
@neuideas
@neuideas 5 жыл бұрын
@@TsuruchiBrian It goes even further than that. You can send coin even to an address which has no possible private key (not just an unknown private key, rather there are addresses that cannot be generated even if you managed to try every private key). This is usually referred to as "burning" coin, and has been used to stick data to the blockchain.

Great video! However, I would NEVER do anything BTC related on a Microsoft Windows machine!! Also just because cable is disconnected, it does not mean you are safe. A virus or malware can steal your data, try to phone it home, see that there is no internet connection and just save its data and check every minute until connection is restored. I use a Linux Mint distribution installed on a laptop that has NOTHING installed on it except my wallet - and it is off and unplugged when not in use. When I create paper wallets I PHYSICALLY disconnect the cables and even turn the house WIFI off. I then boot in to a LiveCD Linux Mint environment.

So the laptop is 100% empty and you boot off Linux Mint CD? Is it safe to boot linux mint CD on a computer that already has windows as well?
@maaifoediedelarey4335
@maaifoediedelarey4335 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, It's completely safe. As long as you only store the wallet, with a proper password at least 16 characters long, on the Linux partition you use to boot into Linux, and never have stored it on the Windows partition (unless you've throroughly wiped all fileslack with Heidi Eraser - 7 Pass DOD - on the Windows partition -- that's if your wallet was previously stored there)

You can create a Linux Mint USB that will do the same job for free. Get 2 blank USB sticks. Follow the steps in this video and save the Bitaddress file to one of your USB sticks. Google 'linux mint' and download the 32-bit Cinnamon version. Then google 'Lili USB creator' and download it. Insert your second empty USB stick and open up Lili USB creator > select the USB from the dropdown box in step 1. > Press ISO/IMG/ZIP in step 2 and select your Linux Cinnamon file you just downloaded > set persistence to around 300MB in step 3 > Tick format key in FAT32 box in step 4, leave the other 2 boxes blank > Click the lightning bolt in step 5 and wait 5-10min until it is finished. Now you have created your Linux live USB. Next you will need to ensure that your computers boot sequence is setup to boot from USB first. You will have to enter the BIOS setup for this. It will be set so HDD boots first by default and need to be changed to USB first. To do this as soon as you turn on your computer you would repeatedly press F1, F2, F12 or maybe delete and it will open the BIOS settings. (The correct button is generally different for all computers so maybe google your computer model and 'how to enter BIOS settings'.) You also may have to change 'boot mode' in the BIOS setup from UEFI or Lecacy to CSM in order for the USB to boot. The boot mode setting is usually in a sub category like 'advance settings' or 'preferences' etc. Once you have changed the boot sequence to USB first and 'boot mode' (if necessary) Insert your Linux mint USB stick and click save and exit from the BIOS setup. Your computer will restart and It should boot from the USB stick and start up linux mint. Next insert your other USB stick that has the saved Bitaddress file on it. Open up the Bitaddress file in 'firefox' browser that is built in to Linux Mint. Hook up a printer that is not connected to a WIFI network and print out your wallet/wallets. Shutdown computer via Linux Mint and remove USB sticks. Next you will have to turn on your computer and enter the BIOS settings again and change your boot sequence back so HDD is first again. And if you changed your 'boot mode' to CSM be sure to change it back to it's default one it was set at. Any problems post your question here.

Awesome tutorial!!! Unlike many others, you talked slow enouh and gave unconfusing and relevant information. one thing you might add is when printing your wallet, you should use printer via a cable connection verses wifi printers. Printrs have memory too. Another suggestion is to laminate your paper wallet to save it from tears and spills. Again, best video I have watched. Once I get mine set up, I will donate.

After you have rebooted & you're back online again, you are opening your browser with the paper wallet address info, so isn't it now exposed to the internet potentially defeating the purpose of disconnecting in the first place, plus a virus that sat on the hard drive could have stored that info locally till you reconnected anyway, right? I know these videos are old too & multibit is no longer supported. I'm seeking a way to create a truly secure wallet on a thumb drive that is encrypted.
@Spartacusse

It is, I guess the video was just an example, of course the best way is to use a Live Linux boot Flash drive to create the wallet, not to print it, b'cus printers have buffer memories now, but to write it down with pen and paper, close everything, and reboot to clear the RAM. And if you are really paranoid, format the flash drive right after, or better yet, use a CD/DVD live linux, not rewritable, normal closed section, CD/DVD.

@Vention1MGTOW

*>can you add multiple times to that paper wallet? or do you have to make a new paper wallet each time?* Either one. Back in the old days a bitcoin wallet would only have one address and you'd do all your buying selling and trading from that one address. That makes it easy for governments to track though. These days we have HD wallets that create a new bitcoin address for every single transaction, which makes it a bitch for the feds to track. It's not like I have a ton of money in bitocoin or anything. I'm just a mechanic. I'm just sick and tired of the feds tracking how many times I take a dump every day. Anyway, yes you can keep adding to that paper wallet or you can make a bunch of them as I have. I rarely put more than one bitcoin in a wallet because the time may come when bitcoins are 100 thousand dollars each and if you have very large amounts on one address the feds become very interested in what happens to the money and they're right there to audit you if your name is attached to that bitcoin address (like if you order something online with the money or something) and if you don't have your tax forms filled out right they'll fine you or possibly jail you.

I don't mean to sound negative, but, a few concerns: That doesn't look too safe importing wallet seed onto Blockchain website. Don't you feel like it must be swarming with hackers waiting there for their next victim? And even if your wallet is password protected, don't you think they would know what password your entering with the proper 'hacking methods'? I think is good, however, for a one time use, just to empty the paper wallet out into another wallet. After that, I think hackers on 'Blockchain' will already know how to get into the wallet after that.

Tech question... If the keys and password are generated offline, how is the password later "known" by the online wallets or exchanges when you "spend"?? Also ... can I "spend" a portion of the paper wallet total, or must I move or "spend" all funds under that public key?
@kevinbill9574
@kevinbill9574 6 жыл бұрын
Very good question
@Spartacusse
@Spartacusse 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin D Weaver The password is not "known" by the online wallet, it does not check the BIP38 Password/Passphrase against a Database like in the normal "Password" sense, that's not how encryption work. Encryption is a predetermined calculation, if you use "123" with BIP38, it will always give you the same set of characters. The problem is, you can't take the set of character and turn it back into "123" only if you know in advance that 123 will result in that set of character. So when you put your Private key, the website detects it's not a set of character generated by SHA256 encryption like a normal Bitcoin private key is, then it asks you for the BIP38 passphrase, it then decrypts the Private key, using your passphrase and get your "Real" Private key, then it tries to communicate with the Bitcoin Blockchain (not the site, the network) and sees if it gets a good response, then it assumes that all went well, and you can issue commands on that wallet, using the private key that was decrypted and is now stored in the website's database. I guess if you put a wrong passphrase it will generate a different private key and it would still work but that wallet will be empty, because it's new.

What’s the point in creating a paper wallet when you still have to disclose your private key and password to the blockchain for anyone to see anyway?
@Spartacusse
@Spartacusse 6 жыл бұрын
You only have to disclose it when you want to withdraw from it. If you created it in a secure way, you can copy the Public Key (otherwise known as "send bitcoin to this address"), and start sending money to the wallet, from exchanges, or post the public key on your website to receive payments, and you can check your balance by searching your public key address on any website that will search the Blockchain Ledger for you and add up all the transactions made to that wallet and give you a total. You will never need to enter your Private Key and Passphrase after you've created it, it's not like a bank account that you need to "log in" to make sure your username and password are correct, and to check your balance. Only when you want to transfer money out of that wallet, is that you'll need to expose the privatekey and passphrase to the internet. That's why people keep, "Hot and Cold" Wallets, a hot wallet will be a software in your computer or phone where you keep a few hundred bucks for quick transactions, the cold (paper) wallet for long storage of crypto. If one day you really need to withdraw from the Cold wallet, you should transfer the amount you need to the Hot wallet or to someone else or to an Exchange, and the rest of the Funds to a NEW paper wallet, one you again, created with all the precautions and never entered the private key and passphrase in any live website or software yet.

So, would that mean that I would have to expose my private key and passphrase on the internet even when I only need to withdraw a small amount from it, in order to trade on an exchange for altcoins?
@Spartacusse
@Spartacusse 6 жыл бұрын
You have to remember, that when I say "expose" it's not like you are posting it on a discussion board, that means that it's being typed in a computer or phone that has access to the internet. If the computer or phone is clean of viruses, and you only use it in good wallet softwares or websites (being careful to check the webiste address so they don't fish you into, for example blockchEin.info) and your connection to the site is also encrypted, meaning it has HTTPS and a little padlock on the left side of the address of the site on your browser, so all communication between your computer and the site (passing by your wifi, router, ISP, etc etc) is encrypted, it's not a HUGE security risk to use your private key to get access to withdraw from your wallet. The purpose of a Cold (paper) wallet is to store value long term, if you need to withdraw from it on a regular basis, it's better to keep a separate Hot wallet, with less money, with it's own public and private key (you still relatively safe if your devices aren't compromised). Or you can buy a Hardware wallet, it's a device that stores your private key and never sends it through the internet, it does all the calculations needed to communicate and issue transfer commands to the blockchain network, with your private key never leaving the device.

This is not simple esp if u don't have paper wallet general knowledge. I'm too fearful to move my cryptos from the exchange because I would probably lose them. Could lose them in the exchange as well, but I could never get thru transferring to a wallet.

Very good info because I just start to make my first cold wallet. Still I kept my pc on line. I used coinbase to print out a paper wallet and I transfered all my money to this cold wallet. Is that secure? How much in fees to transfer from my coinbase account to paper wallet? Miners fees?

"Multibit is No Longer Supported Dear Bitcoin Community, It is time for us to let Multibit go. KeepKey acquired Multibit a little over 1 year ago. At the time, the engineers who originally built and supported Multibit had announced that they would no longer be working on it or providing support. Multibit played an important role in the Bitcoin infrastructure. We felt that it was important for Multibit to continue and hoped that with our existing support and development teams, we would be able to keep Multibit alive. Sincerely, Ken Hodler Chief Technical Officer, KeepKey"

Two words: Key Logger. So you switch off Internet. So what? It can be programmed to keep logging despite Internet being turned off, and then wake up and send off the things it stored the moment you turn your Wi-Fi back on. tl;dr: Turning Wi-Fi off is *not* a security measure.

That's why 'Digital Bitbox' is good, because it requires touching a button on it to send funds. So, even if the 'key logger' gets the password, they do not have the device, so they can't touch the button, so they can't send your funds to their wallet. (Ingenious idea , the DBB).

1st, i dont understand how to make an address on a qr code in my mobile phone, any ideas? 2nd, if you run a good VPN while setting up a Bit Coin wallet, isnt that a secure way to do it, as the IP address is not your real one? I really dont see how all this activity while your online, is at all secure! 3rd, Using a BitCoin ATM, isnt that the most secure way to deposit onto a wallet? 4th, if i have a paper wallet with money in it already why would i bother having moving it around online? As you can see, im new to this! Still learning how to do it before i start trying to do it : ))

You paste your 'wallet seed'. But don't encrypt your wallet with a password, you may run into problems later on Coinbase and Circus might not accept an encrypted wallet (a rumor I heard).
