I found xylol works better for transferring laser print from the paper than acetone. It came from an old article about magic markers. The old magic markers used xylol as the vehicle(?), solvent(?). I used to use this technique for doing T-Shirts. Burnishing helps also.

What is the name of the different cloth/papers that you applied to the spine? It sounded like 'maul' for the first thing you put down, but it wasn't clear. The other was 'backing paper' but I was wondering where you source these? Google isn't turning up great results with those as search terms.
