How to make an 8 Prong Setting for a Square Cabochon: Tutorial

This tutorial shows how to make simple 8 prong setting for aHigh domed square cabochon. The stone I used is a 13 mm Moonstone. This is an intermediate level project. For materials, I used 16 gauge (1.3 mm) and 18 gauge (1.02 mm) sterling round wire, 16 gauge (1.3 mm) sterling square wire, and number 4 low dome sterling half round wire(5.89 mm). As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and a liquid flux.

Have fun! It can be frustrating, but so, SO rewarding! This channel has helped me immeasurably! One tip that Chad gives pretty much every video that I have been working on is pick soldering. Even with my low skill utilizing it, it has made my work easier and cleaner. A thought I would share is, don't get discouraged! Days nothing seems to work right, I put it down, take a breather and try again the next day. You can do this! And I bet you will love it!

Hi Chad ive really enjoyed following and learning from your videos my skills have definitely improved to the point where I want to keep making different things each time. Wife and daughter of course love my new hobby haha 😂 ive set a few regular domed cabachons and have been very happy wity them but was recently given a nice boulder opal cab but the face on the top is flat and tapers in towards the bottom. In other words I cant see a way of bezel setting it without glue. I can chamfer the stone around the top edge with my cabbing machine but id rather leave it as is. What sort of setting would you reccomend in this instance ? Regards Lee

Hello Lee! It sounds like you could file the bezel to where it just barely sticks up over the edge and then set as you normally would. I do that with flat topped stones and coins pretty frequently. Morning chad,im sorry for hijacking this post to ask this question but... have you done a pendant setting for a trillion shaped stone. I made a newbie mistake of cutting an opal to that shape to maximise the stone usage,but i think setting it is going to be an issue. Any help would be appreciated.
