Learn how to make a quick and easy self binding baby or neonatal quilt in this video. Find out how to make this type of quilt in any size as Kim explains the entire process. She explains how to calculate the measurements to make an easy self binding blanket of any size, whether it be for a lap size quilt or a king size one. The best part of an easy self binding blanket is that there is no binding - definitely a win in my books!

Thank you for offering yet another tutorial in your wonderful manner. Like others have said, there are many tutorials showing this method, however, yours goes into greater detail. I learned several things but the funniest thing was what the lock stitch button was for on my Janome! I feel kind of silly now! 😂 Thank you for sharing your talents!

I made a template for the corner marks. I cut out the 1/4" from a piece of cardboard. To mark the corners I just align the cardboard and draw the cutout. 1/4" marked both ways at once.

I watched a couple other videos, but you give the best instructions for this! I really appreciate it! I was able to make one of these, and it turned out pretty good. The flannel I used was a little hard to work with. I did see someone else made a note of being careful not to drag the iron over the fabric to prevent stretching.
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you found it helpful. I'm always careful to really starch my fabrics and yes, the flannel can be a bit more "stretchy" than regular cotton. Whatever I'm pressing, I have now learned to pick up my iron, put it down for a few seconds on the fabric, and pick it up again to move it to another section. Definitely makes a difference!

OK so this gives a 2 1/2 inch boarder to the project. Fantastic. IT would be interesting to see how to do this method with batting included in the project?

Thank you for making the self binding process so clear and easy. I have tried it on my own (before I saw your video) and can see how your method is a definite improvement. Up to now, binding a quilt was something I did poorly, had to unstitch and redo over adn over, and even then the final product was not that great. With your method, those days of frustration will be behind me.

Kim, that was a wonderful tutorial! Would this work with Minky and flannel?
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 5 ай бұрын
I haven't tried it but it should. You might need to make the backing a bit bigger to compensate for the thickness of the Minky.

I just sew from one edge to the other, not starting from the center and it works fine. Not sure why you start in the center. I like how you pressed the seams, thanks for that hint.

This may be a dumb question but can I put batting on backing?
@Chatterboxquilts

I'm not sure what you mean: do you mean put batting on the outside of backing? Are you specifically referring to this project? let me know so I can answer your questions. BTW, there are no stupid questions 😉

I noticed both fabric were white on the wrong side... did you apply stabilizer (something like sf101) to you fabric??
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts Жыл бұрын
No, that's just how these fabrics - which are flannel - are on the back.

Hello again, my blanket looked beautiful until I attempted to add the decorative stitching around the border. It puckered in many places, and wouldn't lie flat. What did I do wrong? Please advise.
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts Жыл бұрын
I haven't had this issue but if you were using a dense decorative stitch, you might need to add some stabilizer behind it - a tear away or wash away would work best. The stitch might've been too dense and the fabric wasn't thick enough/firm enough to support it.
@patg8932

I use a walking foot throughout the entire process, no puckers at all.

Hello, may I use a 1/2" seam instead of a 1/4" seam?? Will a 1/2" seam give me a 2" border? Thank you.
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts Жыл бұрын
I've only ever used a ¼" seam for this technique so I'm not sure how it would all work out if you change the seam allowance.

I just don’t get there’s no batting ?
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 3 жыл бұрын
No, there's no batting. This is a snuggly type of quilt/blanket rather than the traditional "quilt".

Pressing is CRITICAL to getting the binding to lie flat when you flip it right side out. I learned that by trial and error. Anyone watching this tutorial will have all the information they need to do it right the first time.
