In this series I show the step by process of making a viking inspired helm. How to layout the initial pattern on sheet metal and cut the pieces to shape. This is an excellent beginner armor project as building a helmet of this design is quite simple. I will be using brass, mild steel and showing all the armor techniques of a professional armorsmith in this series.

You can inlay silver wire in the chiseling on the brass. Vikings would also twist the wires, giving a braided look.

I'm surprised your not working for a movie cast making costumes. So many details in this helmet and accurate. Fantastic work! Our ancestors would be impressed to say the least. Imagine how long it took them to make a helmet without all the fancy tools you have. It's no wonder swords and armor were reserved for only the rich Vikings!

I occasionally hire subcontractors work for me in the shop. I often hire people to help on set on big shows. Either way I usually hire people with a passion for costume props and at least basic fabrication experience. I would consider taking on an apprentice at some point in time but would only consider a person that had at least 2 years experience working on set in film, television or theatre in costumes or props.

That was a fabulous looking helmet. Ever considered making the same but a real one that would give some protection against a sword blow? i.e. with real, armour-grade metals and riveted chainmail as opposed to butted chainmail? Don't know what metals or thickness you'd have to use but it could be sold for thousands of dollars.

Amazing work man!!! Really beautiful armor pieces you make! I’m humbled to watch! Can I ask you, how do you get to what “shape” and size the template should be, for the four headplates inside the helmet before working them to bowl shapes? I’ve made a Viking helmet my self but had a really hard time getting the plates to fit inside, due to wrong shape cutout of the plate.

I make the bands first and make them as even as possible. Then I make a paper template that is a bit oversized and make just one metal plate. I then shape and fit that in one quadrant and the quadrant opposite. Front left would be the same plate as rear right. The other two would be mirrored versions. Any metal that gets trimmed off the first plate gets used to adjust the pattern for the second plate. In this build it wasn’t until my third plate that I had a complete pattern that didn’t need trimming. I send a lot of time off camera to get it right and in the video it looks easy.

Sadly that education left me with a good background in art history but most of my skills were self taught or learned through my life of building things both at work and at home. Because I had it. Titanium maille is very strong and lightweight so I’ve used it for years on projects that will be fought in. This one was obviously costume only but the titanium was readily available in my shop.

Horns? You do realize that's a fabrication of an opera costume artist in the 16th century, right? They didn't have horned helmets. In fact horns would counter the effect of the high arching dome they used to cause blows to be glancing. Horns would prevent said glancing.

He wouldn't listen though and went out fighting and got his horns tangled in some dude's mail shirt and that's why Vikings don't wear horns!

Viking helmets had a high arched dome shape to cause most blows to be glancing, horns would have countered that effect. The horned helmets were a 16th century creation of an opera prop person. All historical sources point to pretty much what he created (spectacle helmet) with or without the mail, and nasal guard helmets. The nasal guard helmets were pretty similar, but without the goggle look.

Not stupid at all. I should get paid for my work just like everyone else. You can make your own pattern for free or take a shortcut and help out an artist at the same time.

I started making my own pattern and quickly realized the value of purchasing his - so I did and it was totally worth it. He should absolutely get paid for the hours of trial and error to make proportions correct, along with many his many hours of effort to share to these videos. I will be happy to purchase additional patterns for future projects, keep them coming!!
