I found another way to make great tasting refried beans...and its by frying them on a pan with vegetable oil (no lard) with lots of bean juice from the beans, drop in one cirano chile pepper, cook beans and chile, let it boil until the chile looks cooked before mashing beans. Remove the cirano chile from the beans. Do not add salt. The cirano gives the beans a salty taste. Mash up the beans and your done. The beans are not chile hot, however it gives you very tasty beans similar to lard tasting beans.

Hi Paul, we've tried bacon fat and it leaves a distinct bacon taste. Not bad at all, but not really the classic refried beans taste. Is there a Hispanic/Latin market anywhere near you? They'll definitely have it. If not, you could make it yourself (see the notes in the blog post). It really gives it that distinct taste!

When you melting the lard always fry a corn tortilla. The tortilla will suck the bad lard and leave clean. By doing this it will help less gasses and it will taste better

Can you just use the same cast iron pot, instead of the cast iron pan and mix in the lard?

Hi there...if I'm understanding your question right...yes...you can melt the lard and then whisk that into the pot with the puréed beans. Does this answer your question? Sorry if that was confusing!!

Ok...so I just go to the grocery store and look for Lard? I won't make it.. the beans are enough work for me...I had made another refried beans recipe but it did not add lard...looking forward to trying this one...Also...why did you transfer the beans from the big pot to the frying pan on the stove?

Hi Karen! You'll probably not find lard at a regular grocery store. If you can seek out a Hispanic/Mexican market, they'll have it for sure. After we remove some of the excess liquid, we transfer to a skillet, before adding the lard, but you don't have to do that. You can stir in the lard right in the pot. Hope this helps!

You move over to a skillet to fry the beans. That is why it is called refried beans because they are fried after they are cooked the first time it's then fried in a skillet hence refried beans.

The secret for good refried beans are two. One need to soak the beans for at least t5 hours before you cook them and second thing when melting pork lard you need to fry a corn tortilla. That will help to remove the bad lard. That helps for less heartburn haha
