The Korean lady who taught me how to pickle these did not use vinegar. They were fermented pickles. Just like my grandmother's fermented cucumber pickles you could taste the Milky like acid in them I always wondered what was in my grandmother's pickles that made them taste like milk and that's what it was.

My host mom made me this all the time when I was in Korea. I ate all the pickled onions, my host mom thought I was a crazy onion lover! They were my favorite side dish with rice and dried kim.

Katie!!!! 👏👏👏👏 I'm your number one fan!!! 💯 About the recipe, is there a way to do it without vinegar? Can I pour something else, because I don't like the smell of it, I guess it would be okay if the mix doesn't have that vinegar-ish smell, though. BTW I'm looking forward for more dessert recipes, it's been awhile since the last one.

Hey Luiz! It mixes in quite nice - so you want taste strong vinegar! Just slightly tart

Definitely going to try these - one of the local restaurants where I live has a variation of this that includes slices of jalapeno. Does anyone who has made this have a vinegar preference for making it?

You guys slay me!! Try adding some cucumber to the onions! I'm from the UK but I grew up having picked onions and cucumber with salad in summer. Tho ours didn't have soy sauce, just the vinegar and some cloves.

Hahha Katie is so cute! 😊 And yes! This is a banchan I always have at home! Super easy and it goes with everything! 😁 My ratios are a little different but ey “the world is your pickle - Laura Virale” 😘 Saranghaeyooooonggg~~❤️
@FutureNeighbor6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Autumn!! That's right - goes with pretty much anything 😘 What ratio do you use?
@autumnkim43216 жыл бұрын
Future Neighbor it really does! Mmm I use more of a 3,2,1 ratio... 3 part soy sauce, 2 part vinegar, 1 part sugar and just a tiny bit of water. lol that the rough ratio 😆

@Muckrackerz6 жыл бұрын
At 1:44 it seems that you have quite some leftover sauce/marinade? Could you use that to pickle more onions? If so, how many?
@FutureNeighbor6 жыл бұрын
Hey Muckrackers! We actually experimented with two different recipes. So it looks like there is extra left over - that one was actually for the other recipe. But the amount we show in the video should be just enough to cover 3 large onions.
@Muckrackerz6 жыл бұрын
Ah, okay. Thanks for the response - I'll go try your pickled onions out then. :)

Easier version: Slice mild salad onions very very thinly and put in a glass jar. Cover with half plain rice vinegar and half soy sauce, cap the jar and leave in the fridge for 2 weeks. No sugar or water, no boil up and cool down. The best things come to those who wait.
