Baker Percentage Recipe for Scaling
3 Parts Water / 1 Part White Vinegar (100%)
Salt - 2.5%
Sugar - 5%
Mustard Seeds - 0.5%
Turmeric - 0.25%

I personally like to add dill to this recipe (as seen in the thumbnail) This is the most basic pickle recipe I could come up with. What do you like to add to your homemade pickles?

I have a recipe essentially the same, I got from my grandmother. I add white onion slices in the jar as well as the cucumbers. I've always referred to these as "bread and butter pickles" here in the Midwest (US). Never had a batch last long enough to test their shelf life. Keep up the good work. Appreciate the content you're putting out.

To note: These are what in the US are called English cucumbers: they are drier than US cucumbers and typically come in plastic wrap. Most cucumbers in the states have a smooth, waxy finish that does not pickle: if you can not find English cucumbers be sure to get "pickling" cucumbers which do not have the coating. A farmer's market would be a good place to find them.

Going to try these out. You should invest in a mandolin if you're doing a bunch of pickles. They have a crinkle cut blade and you can cut them all super fast at the same thickness.

Appreciate it! I actually do have a Japanese mandolin, but I thought people could pick one of these up much cheaper off Amazon for like £3. Agree though - mandolins are the way!

Dill weed n seed. Plus toss is black peppercorns while it is simmering. Pickling salt for the salt. Use a grape leaf in the jar to get that crisp crunch. Or use calcium chloride. You can use this same method for onions, and jalepenos as well. You can also toss in a couple cloves of garlic into the jar.

A little bit; turmeric has a dry, earthy flavor. Mostly, though, it is a dye.

@@WilsonsBBQ Thank you. Yep, it's just the bog standard distilled vinegar you can get at Tesco and Aldi for about 35p per pint bottle. Thanks again - you're a good man!

You can pickle pretty much anything. My favorite with BBQ is pickled red onion with garlic. Pickled sweet red pepper is also very nice.
