How to Make "X" Horsepower in a Subaru WRX STI

This question has been asked far too often so let's talk about it. I put together a few lists for how to make X amount of horsepower for your Subaru WRX/STI. Please note that there are plenty of ways to make horsepower however this is the list I have put together for everyone. Every tuner will tune a car differently as well but this list should get you close to your goals if not exceed them.

I always keep coming back to this video because its great information and I always see new comments that add so much more to this already great video. My current build on my 2020 is as follows: Cobb downpipe, ets extreme catback, gfb hybrid bpv. Making about 280-285whp on 91 tuned with Migtuned. My next build will be all those + : Id1300 injectors, IA tuning fpr, AEM340 fuel pump, cobb cold air intake + custom air box and then cobb 3 port boost controller. Basically all there is to do before upgrading the stock turbo. One day I will go bigger turbo, equal length headers, maybe front mount and all that other good stuff. I’m not sure if anyone will ever see this as this video is very old but thanks to anyone reading!

Pretty accurate list for all these numbers. However, I would go with at least forged pistons if the car will make > 350 whp and will be driven hard. I'd also use a closed deck if going beyond 450 whp. I wouldn't risk cracking a sleeve after spending so much money.

Definitely never hurts to do so 🔥 My RA block took a beating in the regular at 456WHP. But for reassurance pistons are not a bad idea. But then you go down the rabbit hole of a bore and hone, then might as well do rods etc

This would've nice a couple months ago, when I was building mine! I still follow your videos religiously, and my build was essentially a copy of what you did to the 17 sti before you started putting the flat 6 in it. Went Flex Fuel and using an FP Blue with a 44mm WG. I'm putting down 450whp and 408 ft lb on a mustang dyno. Only thing different from your new list is that I'm still on a stock clutch, but I'm loving it, regardless!

3:00 - DO NOT get the competition IAG AOS unless you have a tune specifically for it. I talked about this with my tuner this week and he said it will cause an overall rich condition that will eventually damage the engine. Stick with the Street version.

Cobb 20G can make around 390-400whp at 20 lbs. My friend made 398whp with all mods you listed for the 350whp range. Also I would recommend upgrading all fueling for anything over 350whp. Good job explaining though. This is very helpful especially for newbies.

Cobb rates their 20G at around 400ish max, I always over build to give more head room than push parts to their limits for growth. But you can make more with their 20G 🤙

Personally I like the blouch ball bearing 18g over the Cobb 20g. I did the oil pan and pick up tube on my stock turbo car I think it’s just a good idea and want to do the tgv and 2nd air pump deletes before upgrading the turbo as well.

Awesome content. Appreciate you taking the time to compile and list these mods. I think you could swap out the aem 340 pump for a Dw400 setup and get a lot of pump for your money. Dw400 will give you a true 400lph feed over the aem340 which typically doesn't meet its advertised lph. I would also add that as soon as you make the change in injectors or fuel pump that the relay harness be done no matter what the power level is. Once you switch to a bigger pump it will require more voltage and a direct feed from your alternator will ensure your injectors get the proper pulse cycle at every rpm range.

turns out here in QC Canada, with our barometric pressure here if we upgrade the fueling and put an intake and downpipe causes over boost in the system and therefor if we want to run a downpipe and intake combo, we need to upgrade the turbo (ball bearing) itself as well and have all supporting mods for it, words from my tuner, didn't know barometric pressure had anything to do with tuning itself! just for anyone who is from QC Canada! great video btw!

Pretty much all good information. Only recommendation: Upgrading to dual fuel pump / hangar isn't necessary until over 600whp. A single 320lph AEM will flow enough to push e85 up to ~305lph @ 600whp. Running a 2nd pump below this power level is just overpumping the system which will heat up the fuel. This is how "vapor lock" is induced as the pumps just heat the fuel during highway cruise until it gets to vapor transition point when it gets up to the warm fuel rails / engine bay. If you have a good quality ECM that can read the digital signal from the flex sensor, definitely keep an eye on fuel temps if your system is running dual pumps full time.

My AEM was capping at 400WHP on E85, the fuel pump is a little over kill but running it with a Hobbs switch from Iwire should help to prevent from over feeding and over heating. Normally I kept mine around 15PSI or so. So if it needed the fuel it was there. I've seen some 450LPHs do work on E85 as well

The 450LPH from walbro is a killer set up for single pumps. On E85 on a single 340lph we bumped up base pressure a little to compensate and worked but wouldent advise it if you can avoid it 🔥

I knew a lot of this information already but it’s nice to hear from someone who has built multiple ej engines and had experience with them. Hoping to hit 400whp in the new year with my wrx. Already have alot of this stuff plus a closed deck IAG block and the sti transmission swap. What are your thoughts on the new IAG oil pan set up and the new IAG aos v3 is it worth upgrading

I actually prefer the V2 AOS, IVE HAD TWO v3s break on me (both the lower coolant lines leaking) I do like their Oil pan quite a bit. Used it on my 05 STi 🔥

I had a ACT extreme duty clutch with their pro lite flywheel in my 08 Sti hatch. I know I was over kill for a slightly modified but with the way I drive I feel it was a good way to go. This made everyday leg day at least for my left leg.🤣

I made 500 on pump. Built motor. Full-Race twin scroll headers, BW EFR7163 twin scroll turbo, 1700cc injectors, Veyron brushless fuel pump, and pretty much everything else on the list.

I have a couple things, first off a tip I think would help a lot of people including myself is maybe putting a price to each item when explaining it to get a idea on how much everything would cost with the total, would be clutch! I had a question maybe a future video but, with all these parts mentioned in each HP range are these all to have a pretty reliable car at that HP range or is it pushing it to that HP in each power range? And maybe a video on if it is reliable how to maintain that reliability with the amount of mantenence needed if anyone different, or what to look out for periodically in each Hp range to maintain the car running smooth. I can make a video on that 🤙 while HP academy is a supporter of thr channel I genuinely do like their classes. I've taken a few classes with other companies and the structure was not good. With HPA I take notes as I go through them and actually learn whatever the topic is. Some I've had to go back and watch a few times but I do love their schooling 🔥

Cylinder 4 coolant mod highly recommended Oil pressure and temperature gauges ! I’m running an AEM 340 hard wired and next Dyno day shooting for 550 WHP. See if she will do it before going radium hanger and a surge tank.

Left out gauges and only focused on power mods Here, cyl 4 cooling mod is hit or miss. Personally haven't seen any real changes between having one and not having one. But never hurts to add. Good luck 🔥 maxed my single 340 out at 400 on E, and capped another around 500 on pump 🤙

Kinda glad that I got the ‘19 STi now. Never realized that the motors were made sturdier for the Kouki VA cars. Only deviation I’d make is a TMIC from ETS, but that’s purely because I like the look. I know FMIC setups are better, but the TMIC look can’t be beat.

I went with the VF48 built by hill country induction, ID1050X, upgraded fuel pump, turbo XS up pipe and downpipe, STI intercooler, Perrin inlet, Koyo Rad, Grimspeed EBC, Exedy organic clutch, Exedy lightweight street flywheel for my 03 JDM Subaru Forester Cross sport. Hopefully I'm not missing anything crazy. I think this will be the max the 5 speed will handle.

But it would be graet if there was some more info about some of the newer engines. And, the way you explaien things just makes sense.
