I have one guinea pig (The other died from some weird disease. The vet had no idea what it was) and his trust varies. He is almost always ok with petting or picking him up. We don't keep the cage closed (because when the other one was still alive they fought a bit and isntead of seperating them we gave them more room and they got along again) and he likes to wander around to look for food. He knows where the kitchen is despite having never walked there, and we had to block his way. My room is right next to his but he doesn't care because I have no food in there. Another really strange thing is that he seems to be able to recognize the voices of everyone in my family, since if there is someone else talking in the house he usually hides. It's really weird how smart these silly looking animals can get isn't it? Okay I could talk anout him all day but no one really cares :P

Lots of great advice in this video! It took me about two years to tame my two piggies. Be patient, consistent and kind and deliver the veggies and they will evertually love you. This is especially true if their first impressions of humans has been negative.

YES !! It works, after two to three weeks of trying out this vid's way, my piggy finally acts comfortable and nice around me! Highlights of what I followed in this vid: (1) Give them food that they like but let them come to you (2) let them hide if they want and try next time (3) slowly pet them in the upper part of the piggy and give food (4) give toys but don't spoil them (5) give them lots of love but let the piggies love you too (6) Talk to them in you normal voice and let them smell you (7) Finally, give it some time and they will start to like you and trust you, don't rush trust and keep in mind that I've had my piggy for months and I've been trying to get them to trust me for weeks. This was also kind of a test because I know I've wrote a lot but if your here, then you have the patients you need for trust from a piggy. Ps. my profile picture in my piggy.

This is great advice! When I was younger we usually got our piggies as babies so when they were older they were already used to us petting them like we did our dogs (scritching behind the ears,rubbing them, etc) or just cuddling them (we had one who would want on the bed for snuggles every night at a certain time) but I'm looking to rescue two piggies and I need to know how to treat them and earn their trust! My guinea pig Milo took about two months To be able to trust me. On the other hand my other guinea pig Olly took about two weeks. It doesn't depend on really what you do but just let your guinea pig learn to trust you and take u in as a part of there herd. I have noticed that Milo is much more shy and aware of everything and that's normal. All guinea pigs have different personalities and you have to know that this takes time. The guinea pig doesn't hate you or anything it just doesn't know if you are okay to chill with or not. Please know that these might not work for your guinea pig sense they all are different. This video REALLY HELPED! Now I know I shouldn't force my piggies to love me and I should give them as much time as the want. One of my guinea pigs, Tangerine, isn't scared at all, except if I try to pick him up. My other one, Jack is scared if I even move toward the cage. It's a good sign. Even a piggie who trusts you may find it safer to eat in a hiding spot, to be safe from potential other predators. If it is happy to eat while sitting on your lap, (while having the opportunity to run back to the cage), then it really trusts you.

Take it slowly. And try to approach your guinea pig from it's face height. Make sure it hears your voice, and gets to smell your hand. Their vision is not so good so it might think you are a predator unless you give it clues by stimulating smell or vision. Try keeping your hand on the outside of the cage and wait for it to get curious about you. Food can always help. Avoid sudden big movements or noises. And keep talking to your piggie so it learns to know your voice.

I have a 2 1/2 month old male guinea pig named Moose & this is my first time getting a guinea pig , I just got him yesterday, I realized that I have been doing everything wrong and am gonna change the way I do things, I just need a tip on how to make a first impression on him, because yesterday when I got him, I took him out of his box and he let me pet him and hold him, I even gave him a kiss on the head, but now that he is in his cage I get close and then he freezes and runs under his slide to hide, I want to cuddle him so bad but it’s not the right thing to do as I see.

It has been 4 years and my guinea pig won't trust me to teach him tricks. He doesn't do anything I try to teach him and I can't even lure him with treats... How do I get such an old piggy to gain my trust? I love him to death but I just want his trust. He snuggles and kisses me but he won't trust me.

Rvlogs 1015 piggies arent known for doing tricks. Its extremely difficult to teach them stuff and they dont really respond to verbal cues like dogs do. Youre better off just forgetting the tricks. The only tricks i would try are playing dead, rolling over and maybe standing up

Whenever I see videos like this, or any guinea pig videos at all, a pit forms in my stomach. Last year, we got two guinea pigs for my birthday. After one week of having them, my parents decided to give them back, as they were not used to us. I tried to argue, telling them that it's only been a week and they need more time, but my parents had made their decision. Caramel and Snowflake left, and I cried so hard. I miss them so much to this day. If only my parents had given them some more time... The worst of all? I knew what day they were supposed to be taken away. I went to a friend's house for an hour that morning, and my parents decided it was best if the piggies left without me around. By the time I got back from my friends house, they were gone. The house felt so empty. Caramel, Snowflake, I love you.

Oh and i frogot if you have a rabbit and guiea pig put the rabbit in the ginea pigs cage becuase guinea pigs love rabbits they are buddys guinea pigs like to sleep uder ther ears :)

Guinea pigs and rabbits don't mix. Rabbits are usually very aggressive to piggies. This is one of the first things I learned when I started reading up on guinea pigs. Putting a rabbit in your piggies' hutch is a horrendously unkind thing to encourage people to do to their pets.

I just got a new one named Kirby yesterday and his progress is good but strange! He shy but not food motivated at all. He is super hesitant to take food from my hand, but he really likes to be petted. In fact, he's more comfortable eating if I'm scratching his hind. I guess butt scritches make him hungry! He makes quiet happy noises when I'm petting him, and he'll usually stretch out to reach his food dish and have a snack while I'm scratching his back. He isn't a huge fan of leaving the cage, but he actually started squeaking loud at me after I stopped petting him last night, and he went back to quiet happy sounds when I resumed scratching him. I've only done it about three times, but he freaks out a bit if I go to pick him up. I've only done it to move him into his cage or to clean it. He calms down once I'm actually holding him securely and scratching his back. I love Kirby already and I'm thrilled that he enjoys being petted and scratched, it seems to have a soothing effect on him. It's sort of backwards of the progress I expected, he still won't eat out of my hand but he already is demanding more scritches. I figured accepting food would come before permission to touch. I have the cage open on the bed next to me while I work at my desk, and he doesn't want to come out, but he makes happy noises and goes after his food when i reach over to pet him every ten minutes. He also doesn't like to hide his face at all. He enjoys having his body snuggled in his blanket, but he never lets his face get covered. he's always staring at me, haha. I think some of his behavior might be because of his background; I got him from a free craigslist offer. A nice guy just got him from the store but already had a cat and a dog, and it wasn't working out, and keeping the cat away was harder than he expected. he said the guinea pig was nervous a lot because of the cat, but it would occassionally lay on his lap and enjoyed being petted. Kirby still seems a little on guard, but he also seems to associate humans as protectors instead of predators.

Aw, so cute! I got my first two guinea pigs around 2015, maybe 2016, and one of them trusted me more after around a few months, though she died about a year ago. We got a second one, who trusted me basically a day or two after we got her. Now the other guinea pig I got a while ago (Not the one I got later) only has started to trust me more for the past two weeks. o . o

At first one of my Guinea pigs was REALLY scared and would do nothing but lay in a corner in his bed, but after offering him the food his buddy loves he decided to pop out of his shell and became really happy, I think he was worried as he didn't have a good previous home (he's a rescue) but he now sees me as the food dude, just thought I would share this story

I got a second guinea pig a few days ago and he's only a couple months old, he's so small and cute!! He lets me pet him already. My first piggie hates being touched and probably always will. Treat your piggies like individuals, because they are!
