If you don't have the screens and want a quick way to make some, go to Walmart, or any craft store and buy plastic canvas, cut to fit the trays and it works great, I did that as opposed to ordering and paying a lot more for the type that came with my dehydrator.

I dry thin slices in the sun all day before placing in my dehydrator. Its cuts the electric use in half. NOTHING eats onions, so they will be fine outside. I also use a mortar and pestle, it doesn't take long at all. Another tip I would give is store the dry onion in the freezer so it doesn't draw moisture.

I just found your videos so I have been watching them over the past few days. Love them and love your calm way of walking us through the steps. Tip to stop crying when cutting onions. I was a horrible cryer when it came to onions. I use to have to take breaks from cutting one onion, it took me what seemed like forever to cut one onion. I was in Home Depot one day and saw some really cheap goggles. . I bought a pair that covered only my eyes tightly. I can now cut an onion without shedding one tear. I never reach for an onion without getting on my goggles first.

I just found your channel. The how to video about making & using candied ginger caught my eye, & then I watched this one about making your own minced and powdered onion. I just now subscribed to your channel. You're amazing. I am an old woman now and I love your tips that you get from the wisdom of the older people. I had never heard about washing your hands while holding a stainless steel knife to get the onion smell off of your hands. I have been wondering how to make the pickled ginger, like you get in Japanese restaurants with sushi. I really believe that I am going to learn a great deal from you by watching your videos. I am really on a roll. I can't wait to see the next video. You answer many questions I have. Keep up the great work you are doing with your videos. I also like it that you love the One, True, Living, Almighty God and his precious and inspired word, the Bible. I love it when you read and quote Bible passages on your videos. May God bless you in all that you do and bless you very abundantly. Sincerely.

Nice video, sorry for reacting to an old one but you got o get yourself a mandoline (like $25 for a decent one on Amazon) and a pair of dedicated butcher gloves (about $5 on Aliexpress.) you will cut loads of veggies in the exact same size in no time. we live in France and regularly things like onions carrots are in season and so cheap yet locally grown, one buys 5Kg (10 pounds or so) for €1.50 ($1,60 or so) clean onions (cheaper then getting little ones to grow or even seeds for it takes no space in garden and time to cultivate) and with a mandoline processing is so fast and easy. The outer layer, and brown peels, do not toss them before making some nice stock with it, loads of flavor and color, compost after that.

I dice my onions by removing the top and bottom like you did, than I slice it thin on my mandolin. I leave the slices piled on each other and then using my large chef's knife, I cut narrow slices in one direction, then turn and do the same perpendicular. Seems to go faster and less of a balancing act getting down to the heel :)

I can easily grow food but I’m spectacularly useless in a kitchen, and l’m not much better throughout the rest of the home. For some strange reason I get immense enjoyment from watching people, like yourself Christa, prepare, and cook food, as well as preparing for the unexpected (something my wife constantly reminds me I’m useless at). Just one question Christa; what is the make of that radio siting on top of your kitchen work surface ...does it incorporate valves? I’m curious! Phil.

It is, Patrick. I am a lover of good antiques. It is a sturdy little arched wood mirror that helps my tiny kitchen feel a bit bigger. Thank you for noticing!

Your an angel, good video... In the oven for dehydrating, I use a only the light bulb to dehydrate my fresh spices etc.! Also did you know the light golden outside of the white onion (All onions, I believe!) is more healthier, than the actual onion it self, check it out IF you wish & thank you again. Just as the Strawberry stems are healthier than the strawberry etc,! I just loving learning new things as this & so much/many more, smiles & take care 1 & all... 💞🎵🌷🌺 🌸 😆 👏 👍 💫 🌟 💛

To help with tearing up, I tried placing a small fan facing the cutting surface and my face. It worked so well that I started to question if my onions we're strong enough! Well, I shut off the fan before scooping the pieces onto the drying racks. Big mistake! My eyes flooded with tears. Leave the fan on until the project is finished😁

If you're going to dry them outside please make sure to put a cotton cloth or some cheese cloth over the top. This keeps them in place and prevent bugs from getting in there.

After cutting onions or garlic I wash my hands with used wet coffee grounds... Not only gets rid of the smell it also exfoliates and makes your hands soft.

I wear a ski mask when I peel a lot of onions I never ever cry

Christa, love your videos. To lessen the crying, refrigerate your onions first and then you wont get as much of the vapor from the onion in your eyes. Also, I just bought 10 dozen pint jars from Walmart.com for $6.06 per dozen delivered free if $35 worth are purchased. Also, go to providentliving.org where you can buy 100 oxygen packets for around $10. Put your dehydrated food in glass canning jars, then one oxygen packet, then a new or used canning lid. When the oxygen in the jar is used up, the lid will seal itself, and you can store what you have processed long term. Make sure, though, that you also purchase the plastic 2 piece closure for the oxygen packet storage bag so your unused oxygen packets dont inadvertently absorb oxygen from the air where they are stored. Push all the air out of the bag, then seal it with the plastic 2 piece bag closure.

You can also use parchment paper on your dehydrator trays. They make stainless steel into "bars" of soap to wash your hands, very inexpensive. I keep one on the sink.

If you have a stainless steel sink, just rub your wet, soapy, hands on the sides of the sink. I have one of those "bars" that someone gave me. It stays in a drawer because the sink, itself is effective and I don't need something else stashed at the sink. If you don't have a stainless steel sink, anything that's handy and plain stainless steel will work too.
