You also want to look at the alignment of the ankle, knee, and hip. Sometimes it starts even in the spine. Muscles do not work in isolation, they are in long chains to keep us in an upright position. Many times it is an overall postural issue.

Hi from India! I had surgery many years ago because my bunion was tearing through the flesh. It's grown back since but the ligaments are stronger. I do some of these massages myself but wish I could find someone else to do this on my foot! I could almost feel the relief watching this video 😂

I have hyper mobile joints, and have a bunion on only one foot. I’ve had it since I was a teenager (so over 20 years now) and was a dancer so always thought my pointe shoes were to blame. But, my brother, who never wore restrictive footwear, also developed the same bunion on the same foot, just later in life. I think we both developed bunions because our joints are genetically loose and the path of least resistance was for the bones to go into bunion angle. However, I’ve been doing this sort of massage daily lately and the pain is significantly reduced

Manipulation is good but when weight is put on the foot, it will slip back into that joint. Orthotics and wedges under the shoe might help with shifting the weight off of that joint.

Do you think regular massage like this, podiatry services, good foot wear, plus continued foot exercises will help not to have this operated on? Or will he eventually still have to get an operation on this to get the bone shaved?

Why does the shoe just stop making narrow shoes and make them to fit feet correctly
@CurtisCT
@CurtisCT 3 жыл бұрын
Call me skeptical, but this is one case where I think it would just be better to just get the surgery over and done with. The reason people get bunions is because the feet are simply responding to the shape of the musculoskeletal system as well as the footwear. They have to carry a lot of weight plus they have the leg bones pointing them this way and that, plus they have to form themselves to the shoes we wear. Whatever relief and improvements that come about from manual therapy are only temporary. As soon as the person resumes their daily walking routine, the foot goes right back into its old habits and returns to the shape that best transports the heavy body standing on top of it. Surgery is the only permanent solution as the surgeon makes direct changes to the anatomy of the foot, correcting once and for all the inefficient shape that leads to bunions in the first place. Just a thought...
@blakerayment8146
@blakerayment8146 3 жыл бұрын
Coming from experience, it is definitely possible without surgery to correct bunions. Correct footwear (shaped like a foot) is needed and things like toe spacers can help speed things along. Strengthening of the abductor hallucis is critical in maintaining an aligned big toe. Surgery may be fixing the ‘anatomical’ side of things but it’s not correcting the biomechanics or changing the footwear that lead to the bunion in the first place. There can be other factors at play such as poor ankle dorsiflexion and hip dysfunction that can play part in the forming of a bunion

I think this could work for some but it's not going to solve the bunion issue. I'm a little skeptical when I hear in the video from the practitioner "I think this or I think those noises are ...etc" No pain no gain is a dangerous term to throw around and not accurate. Again, this may work for some for stretching and loosening but its not going to solve the root problem. The extra bone growth won't go away with this . Obviously, you have to choose what is best for your personal journey

Hi again, I've watched video with more attention and one thing really looked strange to me: 7:40 "joints are lot closer, trying to separate that". In almost all bunion surgeries I've watched doctors talk about bunion as "basically" an extra angle between metatarsals which move halgus joint from 2nd joint to the side of the foot and during surgery they push bone (and joint with it AFAIK) laterally (toward 2nd joint). You here do the opposite, why?
@MelbourneMuscularTherapies
@MelbourneMuscularTherapies 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man! You’re correct in your thinking here and so are the surgeons. Our feet are very adaptive and naturally there is a greater distance between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals and once the angle of the 1st toe begins to move laterally (towards the 2nd toe) this will make the joint of the 1st toe move medially which can eventually lead to a bunion. If we wear shoes that allow a natural splay of the toes (ie Vivo Barefoot) this can be prevented and even corrected. Sometimes muscles can be ‘locked long’ and those muscles Darcy is working on the top of the foot can contribute to Matt’s toe being in that position
@Celeste.Cooper
@Celeste.Cooper 2 жыл бұрын
@@MelbourneMuscularTherapies Yes absolutely! I wear only barefoot minimalist shoes, sandals and toe spacers to correct the big toe back into its natural place. The @ Correct Toes” toe spacers are the only ones I’ll wear. They were invented by a holistic podiatrist.

I could not get what long term benefits are, if any. Or only short term, symptomatic? If "root problem" is metatarsal angle as many surgeons claim, how all this forces the angle to be reduced?
@MelbourneMuscularTherapies
@MelbourneMuscularTherapies 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Alexei! The majority of bunions are stemming from poor fitted footwear, this is why they are more common in females. Years of wearing footwear with an elevated heel which places the foot in a more plantar flexed position and the 1st metatarsal into an extended position. During the gait cycle the big toe is needed to get into extension, which if it is already part way extended the range of motion is decreased which leads to a compensation of turning the foot slightly and essentially going around the toe. Coupled with correct foot shaped shoes, minimal or zero heel drop and with some corrective exercise to bring back lost strength in abductor hallucis - the long term benefits are significant reduction of big toe adduction and even elimination of pain. However if there is a significant amount of additional bone growth at the 1st metatarsal joint that is something that can not be removed without some sort of surgery. Long winded answer but I hope that clears everything up mate!
