You break it down so nicely, thank you for sharing your expertise! I'm in my 40s and getting back into swimming after 20 years 😱 I feel like swimming has come a long way since the last time I was in the water! fingertips first as explained add as a break and slows forward momentum.Try entering the water with your thumb index finger first - keep the fingers together otherwise you will get water grab loss.

It's all good, but no one ever mentions that these movements are generated in the belly: using the power of the abdominal muscles help to control these arm movements along with using the resistance from the water itself. Tighten your belt (as my Pilates teacher would say) and see if it makes any difference.
@missbeans

Oh this is an interesting thought. I always struggle with lack of arm strength, but my core is pretty good. I need to try engaging my core muscles for strokes. I think that might be easier on my bad shoulder too.

Finally! A swimming tutorial using metric measurements haha. I'm 40yo this year and looking to substitute some of my running sessions for swimming instead, due to its low impact nature. Fingers first, 1/2 metre directly in-front of the shoulder, thanks! I haven't done lap swimming since I was a teen, so hopefully it doesn't take too long to get my technique down.

Ok. So your buddy on Skills and Talents believes the S shape pull is the correct way to go. Based on videos of Kyle Chalmers for example. The Straight pull vs S pull seems to be something that goes in and out of fashion in the last century or so. My hunch is that few swimmers actually pull directly back in a straight line regardless of intent. You have to change path at the back of the stroke slightly to clear the hips in any event. Might be a good topic for a video at some point! Maybe you’ve done it already? Maybe a video debate with your mate from the other channel?

I think you mean the Crawl Stroke. "Freestyle" is a type of race where the racers can choose their own stroke but since people always do the crawl b/c it's faster, people think it's not called the crawl.

Ok, about to say everything you said was wrong. (Disclaimer, there are obviously different ways to swim, but as a top ten in Colorado age group swimmer, I do it much differently) so the most important thing is power. To get power, you extend your shoulders and get lots of power from your core, while engaging your whole body. This doesn’t necessarily mean straight arm freestyle, but if you are staying long and strong, you’re not daintily sliding your hand in the water. You’re not slapping it, but it’s not a gentle sport. As for the Dow pull under the water, by doing the paddle thing you ruin all of the power, drawing it from only your arm and shoulder instead of your body.

This is more 200 400 and 1500 pace free technique, straight arm is used for more sprint events. He’s is teaching how to swim efficiently while you are saying how to swim with power like you said. No human is capable of holding the high octane technique you are talking about for basically over a 100 if they do it right. Great job apparently being top 10 in your age group but don’t be so cocky next time
