I love this movie. DISTURBING TRUE FACT: this movie's events are loosely based on a REAL life incident, even though the movie changed up several things. During the early to mid 1950's, one of the top five most popular comic books was called "CRIME DOES NOT PAY". Artist Bob Wood was the co-creator of the comic (he's credited as the artist, but he HEAVILY contributed to plotting out the stories, even though writer Lev Gleason gets writing credit because he added dialogue). Anyway, Bob Wood had an incredibly dark side and it's been rumored that MANY of the highly disturbing crime stories in "Crime Does Not Pay" are heavily based on real life horrible stuff he really did and he saw others do (he hanged out with legit dangerous criminals). Anyway, when the federally mandated "Comics Code" censorship kicked in during the mid-1950's, "Crime Does Not Pay" was eventually forced into cancellation since all the new censorship rules harmed the comic. Well... That's when Bob Wood started to go REALLY ballistic. Around 1958, having a hardcore drinking problem, gambling problems, and not being able to find comic art work due to the "comics code" causing tons of comic companies to go out of business (as well as him having a bad attitude reputation among other comic professionals), he eventually went to the "point of no return". There was an escort that he regularly went to for years. NOT his wife, but this escort was as close to a wife this comic artist had. After several days together, an argument happened, which resulted in comic artist Bob Wood going all Jason Voorhees on her (I won't go into details, but let's just say some of his clothes were drenched in red when he was finished). Sometime during 1958 / 1959 he was thrown in prison, but only for a few years since it was considered "manslaughter" (let's just say the judge didn't take the murder as serious since he didn't have high regards for escorts). By 1963... Bob Wood was out of prison. RUMOR has it he was going to draw a comic based on the murder he did. That didn't happen since he got ran over by a car (some speculate that this was NOT an accident and someone ran him over on purpose, revenge over what he did). Two years later, this movie came out.

See also: 1967's "Guide for the Married Man" dir. Gene Kelly, starring Walter Matthau. It's about how to cheat on your wife and get away with it, with comedic vingettes starring Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Terry-Thomas (the butler in this movie), and more. Both Jack Lemmon's and Walter Matthau's characters are married to gorgeous, sweet, loving women who adore them, cook for them, do everything for them, and the men are like, "ugh, the ol' ball and chain 🙄." But in the end they learn a very valuable lesson, because Hollywood can't endorse naughty behavior like cheating on our meeting your wife, oh no. Must end your movie righteously. 😌

The "Brash Brannigan" becomes the family comedy "The Brannigans" story arc was inspired by the cartoon strip "Blondie." Blondie and Dagwood began as a pair of hip night-club-hopping kids. Blondie was a 1920s-style flapper named "Blondie Boopadoop," while "Dagwood Bumstead" was the millionaire heir to his daddy's fortune. Artist-writer Chic Young created the two cool kids in 1930 to jump on the Jazz Age bandwagon. But the stock market crashed in 1929, the Great Depression followed, and Chic Young decided the public would soon hate the couple -- so he had them get married, they stopped drinking, Bumstead somehow stopped being a millionaire, and the strip ran for decades about a normal middle-class couple.

I once had a conversation with a friend about this movie and we agreed that it is actually a stealth-subversive movie: Lemon is reunited with his wife and it is suggested that marriage actually worked out for him in the end, in the typical Hollywood way, but before that, there's plenty of little subtle suggestions that for an already successful man, marriage is a trap and a mistake. One funny scene implies that women actually strive to make their husbands fat as a mark of ownership.
@RandomOldPerson4 ай бұрын
The butler is obviously extremely gay for Jack Lemmon from the get go. But because this was back when having a gay guy in a movie that survived the movie was nearly illegal he has to get married off at literally the last second to a maid he’d never seen before.

Did either of them need to act? This was the debut of Virna Lisi the italian actress who originally turned down Tatiana Romanova in James Bond #2 From Russia With Love (A role which then went to Daniela Bianchi - also italian actress) Ironically while Hollywood wanted her as a new "Marilyn Monroe" seducing men she actually married her italian husband at 25 and they stayed married for 53 years until their deaths. This movie actually is utterly absurd and a bit sad considerig she didnt do anything wrong (except possibly watch TV when he tries sleeping, but she actually did that to learn english). She doesnt torment him... she is just a bit clumsy and also the language thing on the minus side. On the plus side she is very affectionate, graceful and stunning and really just acts as a beginner at a job at the wife thing. Clearly would get better at it with time. A partiucalry funny part have sweaters to do PR for his "Bash Brannigan" comic and they both wear the same matching sweater. She serves him lunch and while a modern movie would have her suck at cooking in this one she is a real italian lady so there are no issues with her food. The ending (not mentioned here) is short but very telling. She returns and he returns the ring and they go back to being beginner husband and wife. IF there is one thing you can tell about this movvie about a man murdering his wife (or not) is that she is too damn nice for anyone to want that.
@slendersera27 күн бұрын
That sounds like a great movie, actually. I like absurd plots like that. Here's the complete ending, according to wikipedia. SPOILERS: "He is acquitted unanimously, and the men in the courtroom applaud wildly and carry Stanley out on their shoulders. Accompanied by a joyful Charles, Stanley goes home and sees traces that his wife has returned and is in their bedroom. Charles reminds him that killing her now would not have any legal consequences, since Stanley has been acquitted of her murder and trying him again would constitute double jeopardy. However, when he enters their bedroom, he finds her naked under the covers, and she silently invites him to join her, which he does. Charles enters what used to be his bedroom and finds Mrs. Ford's mother, who has arrived with her daughter and is unpacking. Like Charles, she has a prominent tooth gap, and there is instant chemistry between them. Breaking the fourth wall, Charles closes the door."

So I have listened to your special announcement and I came up with kind of an idea for your whole form. What if you guys continue to do the 10 minute videos and then every now and then for a special episode, you still release for your podcast an hour long one. That way it’s kind of a special treat or event for your fans. It’ll be like something to unravel and be a bonus for that dopamine hit when they go through all your 10 minute videos. This also avoids the problem that you guys mentioned in your announcement that things kind of went off the rails. Because if there is just one episode and you guys aren’t trying to continue edit and compartmentalize, you might find it a bit freeing. Might seem less of a chore.
