My mom works in a hospital, and she was doing a rotation in the birthing unit. One day there was a mother whose first language was not English. She heard the word placenta spoken a few times and thought it was the most beautiful word she had ever heard. She wanted to name her newborn daughter, Placenta. The nurses then spent the next 45 minutes trying to explain to her why that was a really bad idea, in the end, they showed her what a placenta actually is and she very quickly changed her mind.

Sometimes, no matter how carefully you plan, failure is in your (and your child's) future. Many, many, many years ago we picked a name for our daughter. We wanted something that couldn't be twisted into a horrible nickname, and at the same time we were determined on a name from Shakespeare. Our choices were down to Portia, Ophelia, Ariel, and Cordelia. The first two got dropped quickly (Porsche & Opie), and we didn't really like Cordie as a nickname - so we went with Ariel. Unusual without being bizarre, easy to spell, simply to pronounce. Two years later, Disney released "The Little Mermaid". Sigh.

When it comes to naming your child after fictional characters, it's not inherently bad, but there is a point. In general, make sure that it's still a real name. For example, you can name your daughter Zelda, but you probably shouldn't name your son Link

My dad was named Terence, abbreviated to Terry after the comic strip "Terry and the Pirates." He has done fine all his life and has been happy, well adjusted and extremely successful. My husband's grandfather was named after the main character in an Edgar Rice Burrows novel -- you guessed it, "Tarzan." He went by "Tex" his whole life, especially after all the "Tarzan" movies came out when he was an adolescent and a young adult.

A couple more notes: 1. Avoid names that people spell all sorts of different ways. I knew a couple girls with the name kaylee who all spelled it differently, and that can be confusing 2. Choose names that can have multiple nicknames. If your kid is legally named something cute like Lily or Timmy, they will be forced to live with that into adulthood. Instead, names like Elizabeth can be Lizzy or Eliza or Beth. Cute for when they're young, but not permanent and changeable if needed without legally changing the name 3. Avoid poetic names. I know it's tempting, but they won't really appreciate it until at least their teenage years. Raine is a lovely name, but in a kid's mind, rain if associated with gloom and sadness, not beauty. 4. Don't try to reference something with the name, at least don't make it too obvious. If you name your kid after something/someone, make it subtle. If you have twins and name them Luke and Leia, everyone will know who they're named after. 5. Before you choose anything, ask yourself a couple questions, such as "would I want to have this name"?, or "what is the first impression this name gives of". I'm not an expert, and I'm sure other people already said this stuff. But still.

If you want to come up with an easy name, just pick one from your extended family or name your child after a deceased relative. I was named after my late grandfather, while my middle name is my great aunt's maiden name. You'll probably end up with a normal and meaningful name for your child.

One of my favorite musicians is a Canadian electro-pop/indie artist named LIGHTS. Her real name is Valerie, but she actually got it legally changed to Lights, as this was her nickname growing up and more people called her that anyway. It fits, actually. She is one of the most buoyant, brightest, and happiest people and it really reflects her music. Now she recently had a baby a couple of years ago, and she named her daughter "Rocket". Some people criticized her for this, but the origins behind the name are beautiful. I think that both of their names are beautiful. Though, I agree with Hank in that you should be very careful when you name your child. Choose something unique, but not TOO unique. Also, if anyone here is a LIGHTS fan, I would love to hear. She's awesome and the rest of you should listen to her. She's been called the Canadian, female Owl City.

I had to unofficially change my name when I came to the US. I was born (and legally still am) Wernher Voss but in the US 99% of the people pronounced wrong, ranging from "wer-ner" (soft W, like water) to "wear-ner" (like wear a shirt) to "wern-her" (like "warn her" with an e sound), that I just tell everyone my name is John. The only people I've met in the US who've managed to successfully pronounce my name are of European descent: 1 Bosnian, 2 Romanians, 1 French, 4 Germans and 2 Dutch. Though, I did have one science teacher who was American who pronounced my name right. He was my astronomy teacher and he'd naturally heard of Wernher von Braun so he was able to say it right, but for the most part I've yet to meet someone who was born in America (to English or American families) to pronounce my name right

Yeah, PLEASE do avoid the most common baby names when naming your child! I was born at the end of '98, and was named Emily. Guess what the most common girls' name of '99 was? I was always one of at least three Emilys in my year at school. Being called by your full name gets tiring after a while.

Having just written Quick Baby Name Generator for Android, I found this video particularly funny. You look up all the names in the world on line and have them put in front of you with a mobile app but a parent HAS to think about what they are doing at the end of the day to prevent a disaster. Chris was a really popular name in my generation so there were times when we had 4 people named Chris in one club at the same time - ludicrous!
