Scott K...🤣 yah, same here! I loved it, though, when Tom finally took hold of the reins with...'Whoa! Hyperviligent immune system?? Wha???' Finally!.... after Dominic has rattled off this term already several times... 'hyperviligent immune system!' like its a good thing, and I'm just dying here over this term. Tom SAVED the interview, I felt, by putting the brakes on and making Dom fully explain 'hypervigilent immune system'.

I'm the opposite. I don't want things dumbed down. Nothing worse than a scientist who just speaks in allegories.
@barbarafairbanks4578
@barbarafairbanks4578 3 жыл бұрын
@@christinelane8592 I agree. Although, I don't think your attitude is 'the opposite' from those of us who weren't looking for a nice 'allegory', but rather the science explained in layman's terms we could better understand. Layman's terms & allegories are complete opposites. Other than that... what true scientist speaks in allegories? None I've ever heard... (though, not saying it doesn't happen, I guess). Robert Sapolsky- a magnificent scientific lecturer comes close - and if you were to hear him weave a (true) story to get his students to fully understand scientific fact you'd be hanging on every word. But I don't think Sapolsky's story telling to make his science come alive could be considered allegory, anyway.
@scottk1525
@scottk1525 3 жыл бұрын
@@christinelane8592 It's not about "dumbing it down." Even intelligent general audiences don't have time to commit to becoming a biochem major just to understand a talk about ways to boost immunity and improve health. And given Tom's clear motives for this discussion (to provide a digestible discussion of practical health tips for general audiences,) deep dives into molecular biology really aren't necessary, and even if they were, there are ways to explain these processes without necessitating that the audience has already commit very niche vocabulary to memory. I guess I could always just pull out the cliché Feynman quote: "If you can't explain something to a 6 year old, you don't understand it well enough."

Somewhat off topic here. My husband had an anaphylactic response to Taxol chemotherapy. His body reacted immediately and was so severe it almost killed him. The immune response can be so strong! His Dr. tried the Taxol a second time resulting in a more severe reaction! He now has to carry an epi pen because certain fruits and vegetables that he once could eat now cause a reaction. The bodies response is a powerful thing.

Hey Doc, I have one question; are you that unaware of your audience that you don't realise we all have to go to medical school to understand the jargon and therefore comprehend what the hell you're on about? @barbarafairbanks4578

Loopy...good points. As for Doc, IMO, highly intelligent people just assume everyone is as astute as they are, until proven otherwise. (probably a mix of that, plus I doubt he has the patience, or even wherewithal to try to get his highly trained neurons (on this subject), to translate into layman's terms.) As for Tom, IMO - he actually DOES understand (and it did take some time & rephrasing & some analogies on Dom's part for Tom to 'get' it... I doubt he's fakin it. (but, of course, this is just my own impression of what's going on here🤔)

Unfortunate. Luckily though Tom is a thorough detective.
@barbarafairbanks4578

Squirrel - this is your opinion, of course. Idk, I think as soon as we try to point out/'figure out' another person's behavioral 'ulterior motive', the more we divulge about ourselves and our own mindset - i.e., we use our own mindset (untrained as far as professional psychological 'tools') to try to figure out where someone is 'coming from.' The doctor IS obviously a highly educated and intelligent person, already. I doubt he needs to TRY to make himself 'appear' to be the smartest person in the room....not this room. Obviously, in this room and in this context (on this subject), he IS the smartest in the room. I'm sure Tom would agree. And, it's all relative, anyway. Put him in another room with some highly educated expert in...whatever...rocket science, for instance, and he WOULDN'T be the smartest in the room. I would venture to say, in THAT scenario he's smart enough not to try to be the smartest person in the room. Here in this scenario, he doesn't need to TRY either.

Ketosis is the body's crisis response mechanism and should not be a normative homeostatic state. There is no civilization that has exhibited long term thriving and health on a ketogenic diet. There is an inordinate amount of research that contradicts the lion's share what is being purported here. Complete Beauty- well, that's pretty subjective. I watch Tom alot, and frankly, many of his guests use the same language...some even moreso. So, to say, 'You can tell his guests don't like it' - is a huge generalization across the board - when, in fact, it's a bit rare, in my POV for Tom's guests not to be at least as 'colorful' as he is, in the language department.

It's healthier and more educational to take it all in, all perspectives, (except religion and politics haha 😄). 8f we keep an open & flexible mind, we may find ourselves changing our mind about something, and then ultimately benefitting from it😉

Yah, good point Tom👍...'immune system 'hypervigilence'-? Dominic is talking about hyperviligence like its a good thing....and I'm like wait!, but doesn't that mean increased inflammation? So, I'm thinking this way throughout the interview and bugged af about it... And now, FINALLY Tom is like, but, Wait! ' immune system hyperviligence'???! 'Wouldn't that be a problem??' Ah, yes, Tom...a man after my own heart! ❤ So now, Dom is 'splainin away what HE means by 'hyperviligent immune system' - and I can't say I really understand, except to think that possibly HIS idea of a hyperviligent immune system is vastly different from mine...and Tom's. I was too busy typing to listen & fully understand Dominic's definition of 'hyperviligent immune system', so I'll back up & relisten. Hopefully, it'll make sense.
