Thank you for helping me open my key box I accidentally locked myself out of; as a real estate agent, I was shocked to see how easy these are to hack, and glad to know my broker requires Supra boxes instead, for listings. These might be a hide a key option for contractors only in the future. Hide the key box too, if using these, everyone!

Really happy it helped and thank you for taking the time to tell me. I wish more people would realise how poor these boxes are. Quite coincidentally, I bought a Supra C500 earlier today. They're a much better option. I believe they are decodable, but it takes a lot more time and experience to do.

These key boxes should not be located by the door, rather out of sight, I work in community homecare and I know of boxes located on a front garden wall behind a plant, behind the bins, and inside the meter cupboard, sometimes the obscure locations make life awkward for us and we have the actual combination there is one property we visit where the box is located on the wall of a neighbouring property and that property has a very alert dog behind the door.

It's also sometimes possible to open this type of low cost (cheap and nasty) lock using your ears. As you turn each dial there's a slightly different sound that the 'click' makes when it reaches the correct digit on each dial. When you hear the different click sound, move on to the next dial. Works on briefcases, padlocks etc too. You can also 'feel' the difference through a sensitive finger. I occasionally open (then reclose) a locked cabinet in our local DIY store to select and then purchase a high value item rather than waiting 10 minutes for a member of staff to open the cabinet. The store is too noisy to hear the tiny difference in the clicks but I can feel it, through a finger really subtly as each dial is turned.
@Pik_lok

Absolutely true. I do have a combination bike lock that's possible to audibly decode, the click sounds dull on the correct digit, and if you check out my Rhinolock padlock short, you can do them by feel... as well as quite a few other combination locks. Appreciate the comment, thank you. 👍

@@Pik_lok I remember the first time, as a kid, discovering the audible/tangible click on a combination lock briefcase my Mum had bought me for "big school!" A couple of years later I picked (at his request!) the Headteacher's briefcase lock as he'd forgotten the combination on his new case his wife had bought him for his birthday. I thought I'd done something wrong when I was called to his office but apparently my early lock-picking skills were hot gossip in the staff room. *"That quiet, innocent looking kid with the bright ginger hair...he doesn't look the type to pick a lock!"* 😉

To be totally honest and clear with ourselves, no - there is no box that can't be opened. A pry bar or a saw or just a big hammer will open any key box - with no skill required. You may find one that can't be opened in under two minutes by an average school kid who doesn't have any tools, though. What if the box was made of four inch thick, steel-reinforced concrete? The other day I watched some folks cutting through the sidewalk with a power saw. ”Like a hot knife through butter". My local home center rents that saw for $40. So a $40 saw rental will open a $3,000 box.

In the 60s 70s combination locks could be opened by pulling on the shackle or chain whatever type, from left to right turn first pulling on lock till you feel it's tightening, then follow on with second etc etc. will only work if none in right place to start with
@Pik_lok

@andrewlengert2558 Thats right 👍 You do get some combination locks with false gates, which can make things a little more difficult. It's a good point, but if anything it would be easier if it was mounted, as you don't have to steady the item. interesting vid,what is the measurement for that line you drew on the paper?
@Pik_lok

@@TheRedleader01 I just drew it so you could see it visually sink in to the dial, so the precise measurement isn't too important. However if it helps, I've just made another one and measured it for you, and it's 7mm. 👍

Is this video for people who have a keysafe to allow carers or emergency services to gain access without breaking the door down? Or, is it for the general public or people who burgle homes and prey on the vulnerable and or sick and disabled people. If it is the later, you have just put thousands of people in serious danger. If I could prosecute you I would, you think you are helping people or think this video is educational, think again. This video will be removed.

Thanks for your comment Steve. This video is for people who don't know what the combination is, as these boxes are useless, and no criminal would need the video to access the contents of one of these boxes. These boxes are cheap rubbish, the manufacturers know that they have design flaws, but prioritise profits over people's security. I therefore hope this video helps people make more informed security decisions.

Fantastic video thank you. Now I can go and break into all the old pensioners' homes nearby. This kind of information should be restricted to bona fide locksmiths and not plastered over social media!

It's probably better like that anyway these boxes would never stop a criminal. Out of interest, have you notified your insurance company that you use one of these boxes?

Unfortunately I can't recommend any as I haven't tested any more. I am looking to test some over the coming weeks, but I'd still be reluctant to use one, especially with tools like battery operated angle grinders available.

@@zairabandy8695The better electronic deadbolts let you program multiple codes, and even one time use codes. Replace the front door lock with one of those. A plastic and sheet metal box is cheap, but it isn't secure.

If you're struggling with that, you could try using a different material such as a label from a drinks bottle, an off cut from a drinks bottle, or some feeler gauge. Alternatively, you can buy specific lock picking tools for feeling for these gates, I will temporarily leave a link in this video description for you that shows a video using this tool. This does come with a cost of buying the tool when, realistically, a hammer and chisel might give a better albeit more destructive solution.
