100%!!! As you move up in skill level these fears of getting hit pop up again and again. I've been boxing for 2 years now. Sparring used to scare the shit out of me, until I started getting a handle of the skillsets required. Then, when my coach had me spar guys from other gyms, the fear came back. Then, when I overcame that my coach had me spar the best guys in the gym (10+ years experience and junior champions), the fear is right back like it never left lol The moral of the story is EVERYONE is afraid of getting hit. As you get better those fears start to go away, until you fight someone better than you. Then, the cycle repeats. If you want to get good at this sport you'll have to go through this over and over, no way around it.

100 percent on point. Sparring started off tough for me, then got easier. Then when I stepped up in competition sparring was hard again. Then it got easier, then it got tough again. I applaud you for dealing with the psychology of it all. Not often do you hear coaches talk about boxing from this angle. What I take from this is not the fear of getting hit but not being afraid to mess up and learn from mistakes👍🏿

The first point is the most important point honestly. Don’t rush it. However I used to be scared of getting hit . When I say scared I mean EXTREMELY scared until I had my first spar I got punched square in the nose and my nose was bl00dy. And I didn’t feel a thing. That moment I was like this isn’t so bad

The quote he said “I don’t even know when I got good I just got good” is so true. After boxing for a while you body is just on autopilot when it comes to boxing a you can think more clearly while boxing. Fear and anxiety just becomes this Little feeling in your chest and you listen to that feeling while boxing

I always tell on this channel that I was a defensive boxer, you know why ? First because I was scared of being hit and hated that, second because I fell in love with the sport and wanted to learn the technique properly ! You're doing a great job coach Anthony, would've loved to be one of your students. Having such quality lessons for free is a gift for this generation, hope they understand that.

In my utmost humble opinion. Competence equals confidence, ie not doing for the sake of doing but applying with comprehensive intent and meaning. My boxing experience was the exact opposite of what Coach Anthony is describing as the proper progression for skills specific attribute acquisition, which sadly plagues many gyms unto this day, ( I am a MMA/ Martial arts instructor myself) And I see this time and time again in the comment sections, young up and comers( Beginners) getting concussed/ rocked/broken noses etc as their first” Boxing/ Muay Thai” Experience, which is an telltale sign of abysmal gym mentality, as well as total lack of proper etiquette and form by the coach( or whoever is responsible) and i had the same experience myself. I first started boxing at the tender age of 16, never ever boxed a day in my life, but wanted to learn boxing as self defense etc, and I already had a bad time with bullies and what not, and the gym I went to, put me in the ring 1st day and I got almost knocked out by their junior champion lol.. For the next 2 years I had at least three concussions a month, it got so bad that I had to literally, cognitively think out sentences in my head, before I was able to pronounce it verbally, slurring my words, extreme light sensitive. Ive should’ve known that something was wrong, but since I’ve never had any experiences with boxing gyms in general I didn’t think( nor knew ) that this particular gym was a “ Bad” one. Key points that also might aid others if they recognize the same patterns. -Lack of drills/ structure/ correct curriculum and progression. - Every man for themselves/ wolf eat wolf( general bad environment/ bully tactics /behavior) -The mindset “Sparring is fighting and Not learning” which only helps those who are already decent, and have already “ Weathered the storm” But in the end will also stagnate as they too are always injured, and if you’re injured, you can’t train. End of progression. - No consideration of weight classes/ skill levels/ age brackets, pitting 40 year olds 200 pounders with 13 year old 110lbs full contact ( which is child endangerment/ child abuse) Didn’t know that then, but now running my own gym I do, and the liability suits for actually causing health and endangerment to any and all participants can be an lawsuit/ prison sentence. Even if your a coach, no your not God, and you have responsibilities and endangerment of someone’s physical health to the point that it cause lawsuits should be slight nod in the direction that you should leave this place. I know this sounds extreme, but I know how many incredibly bad boxing coaches there are out there, and cult mentality is not only found in TMA. ( just a friendly heads up 🙌❤️) As an adult now, 23 years in my martial journey and as an instructor for 15 of them, I’m very happy to see that there are coaches akin to Mr Anthony, that actually points out these facts, as you can’t test something you are not competent in/ with or at. That said, boxing is not dancing, and in the end of the day, if one wants to pursue it as an professional career, then one has to be prepared for all what that entails,( appropriately applied progressive periodization) ie challenging spars ie “ Hard Spars” but one has to be cognizant about it, control/ intensity/ speed can be adjusted and with proper technique/ good partners that also care about your progression( and safety) with competency so that one can go 100 percent, but one puts a hold on the kinetic energy transfer, at least to the point that one knows that if it hits clean, you don’t need to be knocked out to understand that you got hit, saving that to the spars that you have closer to end of fight camp, and or the fight itself, to quote Firas Zahabi: “ Don’t lose your chin in the gym” Again, sincere appreciations, for enabling all of us to observe and learn from such an peer as yourself Mr Anthony. Sincere regards. Fellow Martial Artist. Tom Framnes. Norway.

I used to be so scared to spar after some time I got used to it. I jumped from sparring people in my local gym and then I became friends with a professional boxer. Him and I sparred and I got knocked down from a crazy body shot. I got into sparring when I was about 11 years old. Typicaly, I got knocked out hard from my older brother. Leaving me scarred and scared for the rest of my life. I have strongly considered quitting boxing, or martial arts in general, after doing the martial arts for more than 2 deckades. I'm doing it for a long time, and I haven't sparred in more than 3 years. Simply because people come into sparring to prove something, rather than controlled sparring.
@KennethDuff-hj8ig Жыл бұрын
I noticed that my biggest "fear" in boxing was mostly the fear of looking stupid. For instance if I have supporters with me and I get my ass handed to me and I feared the disappointment more than anything. Sure I remember getting hot hard a thought to myself "damn that hurt , am I sure I still want to do this?" Thankfully I kept that thought to myself and kept going, but I also noticed I did not get hit like that again the rest of the round/spar . There was a time in sparring when I caught a shot to the floating ribs , that hurt!!! But as I finished the round, same thing - I did not get hit in the body again in that round. I don't know if it is instinct or luck, but when I get hit with a good one that hurts me my defense dramatically improves. But when I get hurt I don't quit as much as I wanted to find a spot on the canvas, I really fear disappointment from my supporters more than anyting

Focus on yourself and keep training.. That is what a gym owner tells you so he can get you to keep paying gym membership while giving you very little attention. I knew amatuers who had 3 coachs and their dad only paid one of them. They had an aspiring professional coach who training amatuers for free at the free gym, then their dad would train them at the gym they paid for, and he would pay one of the coaches there to watch/train his kid when he was not around.. How are you going to catch up to a guy who has a experienced coach guiding/training him all the time.
