How to Paint Rims - Stripe Color Change

In this particular project, we took on a set of rims with red stripes that required a complete transformation. Before diving into the painting process, extensive preparation work was done, though not fully shown in the video.
The rims were meticulously scuffed, cleaned, and carefully masked to protect the black areas before applying the new paint. The final touch of clear coat not only enhances the shine but also ensures the durability of the wheels.
Our customer brought us a set of rims from his Mazda 6 that originally had red stripes, but he desired a yellow color to match his car's theme. After approximately 10 hours of dedicated work, the rims were successfully painted. The outcome? A stunning set of rims that evoke thoughts of the iconic Bumblebee Transformer.
The process began by scuffing the rims using sanding paste and a Scotch pad to create a surface that promotes paint adhesion. Next, we carefully taped up the lines and applied a white ground coat as the base, which aids in better coverage of the transparent yellow color. For the painting, a Devilbiss Dagr airbrush was employed for the basecoat, followed by a Devilbiss gti for the clear coat.
Once the basecoat was applied, we removed the tape, cleaned off any overspray, and re-masked the rims. The tire was masked off, and the valve stem was taped to protect them during the clear coat application. Two coats of BASF clear coat were then expertly applied and allowed to dry. The basecoat used in this project was RM ONYX HD Waterborne paint, known for its exceptional quality.

Its actually just white paint, colors such as solid red and yellow are transparent so they just need a solid ground color to save spraying so much or the yellow which is a higher cost color.

It was a ground coat, yellow is a transparent color to paint with so the white paint applied first cuts down on the amount of yellow i will need to apply

@FloppyDonut No, clear coat is what protects the basecoat. You can use a matte clear coat but cant leave the base exposed.

@FloppyDonut it's not a problem, clear coat just help them to look shiny and give more protection, but there will always be a non-glossy clear coat

@SxMVideosProductions The rims are VIP STATUS RG-2 (black and red stripe) got them painted yellow to match my yellow 6, its 100% color matched. Jimmo ROX !!! Honestly man, i get stopped all the time askin where I got them done. You guys definately need Jimmo to do work for you guys, been a year and looks still just as good as the day he painted.

@DSpohnVW I work in a body shop, and completely agree with you, but we also work with much larger, much more efficient spray guns. This is probably just a hobby airbrush that you can buy at Walmart, so it probably takes that constant flow in order to lay down enough paint. I won't commend that method, I'd suggest a better gun, but if show quality isn't what you need, and if you aren't getting paid for the job, the airbrush "gun" works just fine. Even with his constant spray, it turned out ok.

You gotta spray carefully, not to wet and chose a clear thats resistant to sagging. Not much you can do about removing a run on a job like this.

It's amazing how so many people say "rims", even companies that sell them. The rim is the ring shaped part of the wheel that tire actually touches the other 80 or 90% is the wheel. It's like calling a coffee cup a rim because it has a rim too. Craters on the moon have a rim but you don't say "rims on the moon". I have never heard someone say "rear rim drive" or "front rim drive"

@zakamooza Ever notice that parts on your car, any colour including black, fade away and become dull and discoloured? Thats because the UV light from the sun damages the paint, therefore UV protection prevents much of this.

@macdre41510 you gotta find something to spin the wheel on, like a old car hub and one of thoes lazy susans for the kitchen.. as long as the wheel spins centric. Then you just need a decent pinstriping brush and One Shots paint ... and of course a steady hand... just spin the wheel .. land the brush and let the wheel do the perfect circle for you.

It's quite confusing now with molded one piece wheel to give an appropriate name. Before, they were assembled in 3, 4 or 5 parts and a lot of bolts,seals etc.. Now, an alloy wheel without tire is a rim. Steel wheels are still 2 parts welded together where the rim is independant from the wheel itself ,you can distinguish them. Those terms disappear slowly. Soon, they will be in plastic.....(i'm not kidding)

hahaha, wow lots of views, these are my rims btw, been a year now and they still look amazing, thanks Jimmo :D I drive a yellow mazda 6, got these to match the color scheme, have my grille black, headlights bezel painted black (so it looks tinted but not really) black LED tails, and the tinted windows. Thinkin about gettin my hood painted black or a black stripe, but might be a bit much..check my channel, old videos will upload new ones with the rims on.

@robh23a1 I dont do a ton of rims so I may not be able to answer that great, you can post on the site and someone will help you. There are chemical strippers available but i am not sure how effective they be on your wheels and you should take the tire off or at least break the bead.

i think its clearcoat, if you do some paintings with waterbased colors you allways need some sort of clearcoat or mattecoat to finish your work! otherwise the color will come off :)

paint/ weaving a basket next? use a standard steel wheel, spray can black like the tire, no tape, no employee, no time wasted. if you need a tire or rim, they are the cheapest, the tires are delivered to dealers on plain rims, they sit in piles. save your money for an extra car when that thing fails.

You can get this kind of stuff done from CurbRash.com. They painted a buddy of mines Dodge Charger wheels with orange inside the spokes. Looked awesome. Only charged like $300 to do all 4 wheels for all that work about a year ago. Tryin to save up to do my polished Honda wheels black on the spoke sides.
