All of the cars that I do I do for competitions that require original finishes (museum restoration is what they call it around here). I use acrylic lacquer and cut and buff it. The nice thing about acrylic lacquer is that you can stop in the middle of doing, say a hood, and pick up and finish it the next day. Most of the cars that I do, I do one panel at a time. Hood one day, fender, the next, door the next, etc. I use a six-gallon pancake compressor and an LVLP gun. A friend of mine has a huge industrial Ingersol Rand compressor that produces 150 CFM. He can paint a 747 jet non-stop if he wanted to!

HVLP guns are typically rated for 14 CFM at the gun (important as there are loses from tank to gun) and above, that’s the High Volume part of HVLP. With a smaller compressor you absolutely need to match the gun CFM requirement to the compressor output, at the gun. Try an LVLP gun, they’re not expensive, I’d be fascinated to see if your finish is better. Try high flow connectors and a higher I.D. Line too. Also, keep your water/oil separator some distance from the compressor and if possible after a u-bend in the line. This acts like a water trap and allows time for the air to cool and lose moisture before arriving at the gun. 🤞

You need to set the compressor at about 15 to 20 psi more than the gun regulator to keep pressure from dropping too much at gun.
