When using transitional sentences, like praising, I would highly suggest using one specific type of phrase to praise. In my years of teaching 2-7-year-old kids online, I found that using one set way to praise like "GOOD JOB!!!" will be less likely to confuse a level 0/level 1 student. By using TPR I make them understand it way better. I also adopt a less is more approach, as in fewer words = more meaning - for lower levels. I train teachers at the company that I am currently working at, and found that too many teachers use too many words for example in one breath they would say, "Great Job! Well Done! That's excellent! " and the kid would be sitting there like "eh?" I love using TPR and Props but when transitioning don't confuse the kids.

I had a terrible Magic Ears interview experience. No amount of preparation would have helped. My interviewer was not a native English speaker and did not speak English with proficiency. I think he may have been Eastern European. He spoke English with a heavy accent and several grammatical errors. During the Q&A I had to struggle to decipher what he was asking me, so I could respond. During the demo lesson, he seemed to forget what role he was playing. He kept saying the letters, sounds, and words before I could prompt him to do so. I could not pretend to teach someone who was talking over me like I was the student. It was awkward. Care to guess if I passed?

About being in a quiet place... What if you live in a city that might have a firetruck loudly fly by or maybe a loud car honking... is that ok ish? There's no escaping it for me! It's not all the time it's just NYC.

Hi Lynn- what a great video that really explains what you’re going to be looking for in the interview. I just signed up and am trying to upload my documents to finish my application. Hmmm it keeps saying (Please try again). I’ve checked my internet and it all seems okay. Do you know if anyone else is having a hard time using the platform to upload documents? Thanks for checking. I don’t want to miss out on what looks like a great teaching opportunity. :-)

The application webpage is fairly clumsy and incomplete (my country code is not listed and the country codes are NOT sorted!!). Do check that ALL the required entries are complete. Do a refresh if it fails (F5).

Hey, this video was great and really helpful!! I was thinking about going into Online TEFL too, i have a Qualified Teaching Status but not a TEFL certificate and was wondering how essential a tefl cert is to get a job at Magic Stars?

I am intrigued to be part of the "The Magic Ears" Family! I was wondering if I could apply even if I'm not a native speaking? I speak fluent English and I grew up teaching it to younger kids .. Can I apply? Thank you!

I didn't pass the interview. I found it awkward talking to adult as if they were a 2 year old. I read reviews and most suggest to do the live demo. If I could do it over again, I would do the recorded demo.

IS this an American or a Chinese school? i am considering whether to apply as i have way too much time on my hands. My concern is that as soon as the pandemic is over and i can get a visa to go to China, I will be teaching at a high school in Guiyang. Is my interviewer going to be Laowai or Chinese? If I am working for a Chinese company I would prefer to be interviewed by a Mainlander.

Hello there! This is the Magic Ears Channel, so Lynn probably won't see your message. You could ask her or another one of our great teachers to mentor you by going to our q&a facebook group! Lynn has been under the weather and may not be able to, but we have lots of great teachers who are happy to coach applicants. Good luck!

@@MagicEars The onus is on YOU to make sure you are not fostering a workplace culture that condones racial bias. Do not burden the victim with that responsibility. It sounds like you are trying to absolve yourselves of responsibility.

Interesting.............I just applied to the company with a referral, and received a quick reply (on a Sunday!) that I would not be considered. After reading some of the other comments, I wonder.......am I too dark,? Have I not specifically taught ESL long enough, even though I have TEFL certification? Am I too old, even though I play racquetball, ski and salsa? There was no space to provide any of my other experiences that would surely be an asset! Oh well............
