True. I just think if you're ignorant yourself, it gives you less right to be offended if people are ignorant about you lol. Most Latinos outside of Mexico don't like it when people think they're Mexican, yet they assume every Asian is a Chino, to the point that in Latin America 'chino' is used interchangeably to mean 'Asian', when it should really only refer to people from 1 of 48 Asian countries: China. Well then, if you gonna use that word with all Asians, don't get offended if we call you Mexican 😆

Yes, but it’s better and more polite to be patient and allow the person who has gone to the trouble of learning the language to continue and give them the chance to practice and improve their target language. @@boink800Quite true, though I'll add it does get a bit exaggerated I feel. If you're not in a decent sized city, you will run into people with weak english, and quite a few who don't really speak any. Great video....enjoyed it very much!! Huge fan of Dreaming Spanish. ..................... per the topic Germans refer to their own country as Deutschland, Latin-americans refer to that country as Alemania and in the US the country is called Germany. It’s a non-issue, as long as everyone in the conversation or reading the text understands the reference. That being said, I try to accommodate the audience. All of these things are actually based on local culture. It’s not rational to expect other cultures to adhere to one’s own cultural norms. That runs counter to the entire concept of “local culture” and “cultural norms”. It’s actually a far larger topic. The rational conclusion of the much larger topic is this: Each culture can refer to things (country names or anything else) according to their own cultural norms. Where they run afoul of reason is when demanding that all other cultures adhere to a single culture’s “cultural norms”. Each culture has a right to its own cultural norms. But the point of this video is listening practice. The content is engaging and well made so it accomplishes the purpose. P.S. I could provide another example that is EXTREMELY common, but it would blow up this comment thread and distract from the entire point of the video, lol.
@chandie52984 ай бұрын
inb4 someone points out the obvious. Yes, I know my response does not really address the topic in the video and I was clearly trying to post on a topic of which I have an interest. The actual topic of the video would be more akin to the US being spelled "The Unyted States of America".

Why Columbia is the spelling of places in the USA: Columbus is the Latin version of the explorer's name. In the time when these cities and the Ivy League university were named, Latin was the lingua franca (like English is today). Colombus is a spelling of the explorer's name in Italian which was never the lingua franca of any time period. It is actually kind of odd that Colombia which was named by the Spanish when the Spanish version of his explorer's name is Colon.

To explain the "Columbia" spelling, you may not realize it because you may not have seen them used in an English context, but this is actually the correct spelling for place names in the United States. "District of Columbia" and "Columbia University", for example. In the past, I have spelled "Colombia", meaning the country, and my spell checker suggested "Columbia" instead.
