How to plastic weld like a pro with no expensive tools

Plastic welding is pretty simple and does not require any expensive tools. You can do it with any decent solder gun and you can pick up the plastic rods online or from Harbor Freight. I also use a heat gun if i have to fix a twist or high and low spot.

I have a desoldering gun, Hakko FR-300 and i don't want to destroy the tips doing this. Whats the one you're using? Cheap so i can always afford to use to fix some plastics and not worry about it being damaged as it should never be used for soldering... Like a throwaway tool... Also, curious, did you check the tensile strength afterwards?

I used a old solder gun I had with a beat up tip so pretty much any tip you can get for your solder gun. As for tensile strength I have never had one re-crack on my and if you do a backing plate with some atwood 7200 then you will break something else before the repaired area would ever crack. Been plastic welding for many many years started out on some of my older sport bikes that would get a crack in the plastic.
