"There is no need to rush here". Best advice for a sandbox game in particular, but also for ANY kind of game. People these days seem to have forgot to ENJOY games. Everyone so focused on rushing through content to be the best ones in a game or have the best gear in a few days and then change to another game a week later doing the same thing. And especially in online games this often means missing lore, exploration, beautiful locations, easter eggs etc etc. People, there are devs out there that worked HARD to create wonderful worlds, the best you can do to repay them is to enjoy what they've done, not rushing through everything and then complain about "lack of new content". There's no magic wand that will create new content every day in the blink of an eye, there's only hard work behind the scenes.

It's easier to enjoy a game when you manage to get to the end then go back to enjoy the parts you like than being forced into an insipid journey and struggle. It's akin to going to sizzler at 11am instead of 3pm to eat at buffet. You come at 3pm and all that's left is the unwanted stuff because all the good stuff has been nerfed, I mean eaten. Oops...too soon?

Facts. Those whiny, self-entitled experts of consumption are why so many "AAA" games prioritize quantity over quality. Catering to the masses... Elite doesn't fall prey to this, but it isn't nearly as complex or deep as some like to pretend. The number of mechanics at play rarely affect one another in any meaningful way, and the narrow scope of the "simcade" combat limits any creative tactics. Still, E:D is the best pure space sandbox out there in terms of individual freedom--even if the heavily tailored gameplay components tend to hold it back from greatness. I also can't wait to see what space legs bring to the table.
@xpanteganax
@xpanteganax 3 жыл бұрын
@@greenhebi Yes, I agree. No game is perfect. Elite too is not perfect at all. But people should also pay attention to the games they want to buy. A sandbox is by definition a game with a universe where the players should "make the content", like in a true role playing game or something like that. Devs create the world, they give you the tools to do what you want, they can prepare some background events and so on, and then everything is in your hands. These are not games that hold your hand or give you specific missions or a story like in a single player title. I'm 44 now, when I was younger, even as a kid playing the original Elite back in the '80s, sandbox titles were what we were dreaming of. Then we started seeing this paradox where players, having the first sandbox titles in their hands 20+ years later, felt "lost" without someone giving them some directions on what to do. Without a story to follow. That's why usually sandbox games have loyal but not so big communities (well, not big compared to what an AAA title could in theory have), or they are usually described as big but not deep. For sure, they're not games for everyone, especially for someone that wants more immediate action, but again, for that there are other titles out there.

@@xpanteganax Right? I don't need trails of bread crumbs to have fun in a game (though the occasional bit of context is nice.) My first gaming experience was on an Atari 2600, so even the laziest games of today seem comparatively amazing and massive. The first games that I played on PC (outside of "educational" stuff like Oregon Trail) were DOS sims (688 Attack Sub, some M1A1 tank sim, and an early version of Falcon.) The freedom to play how I want rather than following preset paths has long been my preference due in part to those old sims. Don't get me wrong--I play a LOT of linear titles, but I usually find myself imagining what a less focused version of those worlds could be... While I have never regretted playing E:D, some of the issues that keep nagging at me have apparently been there since the beginning and are not likely to change. That's fine. I don't expect perfection, and the game was not designed around my personal preferences or dreams. Many gamers that are around half my age seem to need that carrot-on-a-stick design or focus upon what I see as merely updated versions of Doom and Quake deathmatches. Some younger co-workers even convinced me to ignore my better judgment and join them in the rapid-fire staple gun bouts of CoD: Modern Warfare. I figured "What the hell?" Now, that I do regret--not because I see the game as "bad," but due to the fact that it is only an expanded and slightly prettier version of the same game from 2004...with more bread crumbs to follow and carrots to chase. Not my thing. Is there such a thing as "too much freedom?" I don't think so, but you're right. Some people feel overwhelmed by the amount of options in a true sandbox. My only advice to them is to take small bites, or to focus upon a single goal, rather than take on the entire universe at once.

Coming from EvE, Just picked this game up a few weeks ago on sale. The last few lines really got to me. "Know where you are, See who you're with, Learn how to live, and don't panic. Fly Smarter Commander." I have 167 hours in the game so far. mostly been doing courier missions. Last week I took my first few nerve wracking steps out of the bubble to get a meta alloy to unlock an engineer. There is something rather serene about several hundred lightyears away from anybody who could in theory help me. But to see so many communities in this video makes me want to see people in game. Hell I bought a DBX based on your review even if it is not meant to be taken seriously. It's what got me out of the bubble. Thankn you The Pilot. Your videos are reachingg newer players. @@HaloFTW55 And they counter with "I have never been killed" when I wish some of them the full experience of being ganked. And that is the problem,. the only things that can really get to them is: 1 - the "hot ship/module" systems that makes them bleed credits. Credits that are easily gained by not killing players for a while. 2 - notoriety and power wide bounties. When they are blocked from landing in large parts of the galaxy. Doh, what did you expect? 3 - NPC special forces. They _hate_ these with a vengeance. I just wish that their bounties were not cleared if they chose the sidewinder return (at least not until all their assets had been sold off on their behalf). And they consider all of these "bad things" in the game, not understanding thay they only have themselves to blame for their situation.

New player here with about 120 hours. Your advice is perfect. I have taken my time biting off one piece and giving it a thorough chew before moving on. Running basic courier and cargo missions taught me what I needed to know about navigation. I then built up a Asp Explorer for mining and stuck with that until I could confidently core mine. Then I spent some time with engineering my FSD which taught me what I need to know about engineers in general. I still haven't maxed out any specific engineering modules yet but I know how to do it. Now I'm working on minor exploration tasks--getting to know how to operate the appropriate scanners etc--and doing planetary landings to get materials to advance engineering further. And I picked up a Fer-de-Lance to go to some resource sites and run a few bounty hunting missions to get me started at combat. Now, when I settle in for an evening of Elite Dangerous, I have options I am comfortable doing. An hour or so of mining, gather some more resources using my DBX and SRV with the goal of extending its jump range even more. After that I might just run some hauler missions to up my rep with this or that faction and scan a few new systems and map out some planets... Games within one game. My next bites will include getting a Guardian Frame Shift Booster and learning to fly without fight assist. And eventually, when I have maxed out my jump range for Deebee (my DBX), I think I'll take a trip out into the far reaches to see what is there and to go some places no one has been before. After all--that's the reason I first sat in a Sidewinder--to see where it would take me. But there really is no hurry. Those places will be there when I get there.

So true. 90% of the people are lost in open games, they can't make their own adventure and get bored and/or think it's too much work. For me open games are a platform to do what i want, to join or create communities, to invent activities or achieve the impossible. I'm new to Elite Dangerous but being 2 weeks in, i know i'm going to have a great time, and it's a game where unimaginative people don't last long, so i'm sure that the people i run into are the long term players. After Spacelegs i'm sure they will focus on ingame activities in future updates. ED is already amazing, but i'm sure that the next years will be a blast. Regardless, i'd have fun for years with what it is, it's just that i see the potential and after you guys waited for years, the new times are finally coming. It's a bright future commander. I had gotten into elite a little bit a few years ago but didn’t really have the time to really learn it. After the rough last year I saw it just sitting in my games folder and thought, “hey I bet that would get my mind off of my troubles.” So I started looking into how the game had changed since I’d last touched it and thought yeah that’ll do the trick. After a couple of marathon sessions and a whole lot of KZbin, I had finally gotten my first mining rig all set up and set out to find my first astroid full of void opals to crack open. A couple of hours later I’m about to sign off and think about re-specking back to a trader when I see one last asteroid I wanted to check. “Core detected: Void Opals” when that bad boy blew I literally cheered. Now I know just why everyone loves Elite so much and has so much passion for it.

Awesome video. And I totally agree about the rush towards the bigger ships... I'm triple Elite and own both a Cutter and Corvette and while I love both, I kind of feel that I'm done. There no more ships for me to work towards. Carrier? I'm a solo player, what would I do with a Carrier? So yeah, don't rush it and take your time. The fun is in the journey, not the destination.

It is not about spending too much time in game, it is about _how_ you spend your time in game. As long as you are having fun without destroying the game for others through cheating, ganking or obstruction, you are doing it right. Does not matter how long you play (until you are so caught up in the game that you other life suffers).

Very good video, highlighting the fact that Frontier could have given some social tools since the beginning, for this wonderful community to make the best use of and shape the galaxy over time as some games have done in the past. I'm not even talking about modding, just the possibility that groups, guilds and corporations exist through the game, its lore.

I used to play this game religiously. Several months back, late 2019, early 2020, and i really got into it. One of my buddies convinced me to join, and i started playing with him. He out paced me pretty quick in progress, so i was kinda left behind. Once he showed me these things called "power play factions". We joined Aisling Angels, and grinded on the BGS and merits like there was no tomorrow. I even got to know some of the imperials really well. Once spring of 2020 rolled around, i had a decent sized discord server where it was me, and a ton of my friends, would hang out, chat, share memes, ect. I started to slowly convince them to join me in powerplay and BGS. Most of them never played before, so i quite literally had to resort to playing teacher until they got a keelback or so. That went on for about 3 months, before everything went downhill. The higher up were convinced i was attempting to destroy the faction from the inside out, remove the head of power from the faction, and completely undermine them. It was terrible. I was known as a nice friend, a reliable teammate, and a good pilot, who just loved to shoot things. After what was to be my exile, i became known as a thick headed, backstabbing traitor, who only looked out for themselves. My entire server collapsed, with nothing but spamming, and hate messages across all channels. All of my friends turned on me, as i was the devil incarnate in all of their eyes. I was barraged by a waterfall of hate messages, death threats, and a literal countless amount of harrassment for a little over a week. Anytime i saw anyone in-game with the name "Aislings Angels" under their name, it was another attack of hate and, profanity, and even a few racial slurs. What started out as me wanting to have fun time with friends in space, turned out to be me just a pin cushion of hate. This game has fully ruined me, and what friends i had. I hate this game

I started playing about two weeks ago, and today for the first time i left the bubble to travel 380 Ly to a get a ton of meta alloys to unlock felicity. The feeling of being on your own, in your ship, no stations, only void and stars, is the best thing i´ve experienced since the first time i played halo almost 15 years ago. I´ve decided to engineer a travelling ship to go to Colonia and Sagittarius A just to take photos of the massive galaxy that is in front of me and to land in the first planet that catches my eye. For me that feeling and every single one of all the feelings i had since i started this journey is Elite Dangerous. Please if you just started playing today or very recently and you don´t know what to do, my advice is for you to have lots patience, you won´t regret it

Mate, your Videos are always so well done! I am a passionate, casual Elite player, and this is just so good! Unlike most other "How-To"-Guides out there you actually give a deep insight about how most of us experienced players feel, when talkin about the Game to new Players. Actually your Videos inspired me to edit Videos for myself as a Hobby! (for a totally diff. Game tho XD) Because they are so well made! Please keep it up! You are the Best! Double Like! o7

This video is a great summary of what this game can offer. Like earlier comments, I also started watching your ship review videos 1st and still come back to them occasionally. But, this video, like my Corvette, speaks to me. Lol. I did rush this game the first time in effort to make money and rank to get the Imperial and Federation ships. I made Elite in Exploration by Robigo runs instead of actually spending time in the black. Though eventually my father and I went to Colonia and Sagittarius A much later, it didnt mean as much after I had already made the rank. Then, CGs raised me to Elite in trade. Point is, I rushed it and wish I hadn't. Now, that said, I am one of the poor souls that only plays on PS4, so the game has become a bit more challenging without all the 3rd party sites to help. But, this led me to an opportunity. Why not start over??? So, I used an old junk email to make another Playstation account and literally started from scratch, and I love it!!! No rushing, no rank grinding, no fighter pilot, and now, not even 1 engineer opened yet! So, no real help apart from my previous years experience playing Elite. Sure, its nice having all the ships i want, and a fleet carrier to keep them all in. But this new "mulligan" with Elite Dangerous makes me really appreciate the game more. I'd like to think I have you and your videos to thank for that. I appreciate all that you have done, hope you will eventually do more videos, and wish you the very best in your new home and carrier. Hopefully I'll see you in the black again someday. o7 commander!

I'm at hour 217 of Elite, speaking for myself I'm so, so happy I didn't rob myself of the early hours. Figuring out where to go, what to do, and who to be is truly the Elite experience. It's finding your identity in a sea of stars. Crawling, walking, then running towards your objectives. Flinging yourself into the black, experiencing the joy of discovering a system no-one in game has ever seen before and charting every bit of it. Taking a mission for a CZ and then realizing maybe you should come back to those later. Becoming a space trucker so completely that you have an earnest desire to wear a cap to match. Hunting pirates in a HazRes, or maybe becoming a pirate yourself. The possibilities are as endless as the stars we have yet to visit. o7 commanders.

Very true about enjoying the early game. I have a second account (Free Epic) and am having way more fun starting over again. Once you reach a certain point you forget how much fun you can have getting that first ship upgrade or engineering unlock. Now when landing on a planet everything is a discovery! Picked up some carbon.....new material found...woohoo! I also agree about ships...I have them all (minus Fleet Carrier) and I usually come back to my Python, and DBX. Keep up the great content!

I'm new to Elite due to Epic. I'm watching beginner guides just to get familiar and soon enough I'm hearing these get this and that do this to make money quick. You know what, you are right my guy. I'm just gonna fly and do whatever. They ain't robbing me of my fun failures.

Also, failures in small ships are cheap. I got caught by the community goal bug so I tend to busy myself with those, and that takes an insane amount of time. But when I got back to the game a few months ago, I ventured 5ky from Sol in my Cobra Mk III, because that was the ship I had when I got back into the game. I now have larger ships (Type 9, Imperial Cutter), and I have better ships for exploration (Asp Explorer) so I suppose the Asp wil be my next exploration vessel, if I just can leave these CGs alone.
