Actually this technique is quite useful. Even though I still can't do it completely painless but at least now I can really play glissandos. It's a lot better than pressing my fingers directly on the keys. Thank you.

maybe you’re too tense when you play, at least that’s what it was for me at first, don’t think too much about it and when that moment when the glissando ends you’d know to hit your chord
@Accuratetranslationservices4 ай бұрын
Agreed. I find the orthodox way of doing the descending glissando -- with the backside of the thumb -- very painful. Your knuckle just crashes into every note like a car smashing into a wall. It seems the only way to fix that is by straightening the thumb more, but then that just feels awkward because your hand is already angled toward the underside of the thumb. I just use the tips of my fingers, the fingerprint part, same as the way I play, with my pointer and middle finger, and sort of smear down the piano. It is way easier I find and the benefit is that it is easier to pick up playing again because my fingers are already in playing position

Good tips... On the piano it is usually with the white keys. The 1 piece from the 1970s with a glissando intro is "Dancing Queen" from the Abba Rock band. There are keyboards with a rolling switch on the side to simulate the smooth gliding effects of an electric guitar. Otherwise glissando on a piano is just discrete sound pitches.

i found out that it also depends on the piano action and key design.. 1. many years ago i played the piano in a school musical band and we also had the song "i dont like mondays" by bob geldof / boomtown rats in our show. with the big black keys glissando at the beginning. there was a grotrian-steinweg grand piano, which was very nice, but that glissando on the black keys was impossible. as in a glissando there is always some sideways force on the keys, they got somehow very hard-moving due to friction. and moreover, the keys were were more sharp-edged than on other pianos. it was just not possible without ruining my fingers or hands, i had to use small wood blocks to slide over the black keys for this section ;D 2. there is this passage near the end of beethovens waldstein sonata 3rd movement with the octave glissandos. it was absolutely no problem on my electric piano, but my acoustic grand couldnt make it, similar to #1. then i asked my piano technician if he coud do something, maybe oil the action or something... and he did.. and voilà! now it slides up and down very smoothly. :) there are also some more glissando techniques which are often (but not exclusively) used on hammond organs etc: starting from using the inner side of the fingers, to applying the flat palm to the keyboard mostly for crescending upward glissandi.. or if it has to be really mad then use your whole forearm :)

My nails are very small. Yesterday I played Prokofief's Prelude at my lesson and the teacher told me that the thing I'm doing is basically just nail rolling over keys and it does no sound. He told me I need to play deeper and it's gonna hurt at first, but later I'll "develop" bunions so it will stop hurting. That doesn't sound like a healthy way to do that.
