Before I get to learning to breath correctly, I'm practicing to rotate and maintain by balance as well as my body close to the surface of the water. [i.e. it should not sink due to rotation or breathing] Coach Mandy, you've been very detailed in your instructions on breathing on multiple video's .Thank you. Beyond my normal rotation while swimming, I only need to rotate my neck&head (without additionally rotating by body) for my mouth to surface above water in the airpocket to breath in and breath out while rotating up (more) and back (less). Can you confirm?

i've found that the skill of breathing and kicking are the 2 most common problems i encounter when teaching and coaching. those 2 items alone account for a majority of problems in helping people swim efficiently.

I can't remember learning to breathe while swimming freestyle, which had to be some 65 or so years ago.... I think I have always made a practice of breathing on both sides, kind of like learning to use both hands, and feet. If you have trouble breathing on only one side, it is most likely because you never practice on the other side. I breathe every other stroke or once per arm cycle. Breathe one side for one lap, and the other side for the next lap...

I guess I should add that I can't go more than 100 yards without having to breathe every other arm stroke. Even breathing on every 3rd stroke, I am running out of oxygen by the time I get to 100 yards. No amount of training seems to make any difference in that. That has made the gallop style a natural fit for me. I do practice swimming 25s and 50s with more strokes per breath, but still, when going for any kind of distance, I have to go every other arm stroke. Our pools just opened up again!!!! Ready for week 2!

Yes, breathing on three’s for distance requires a slightly different exchange but it is totally sustainable once you find it. That’s great news about your pool. Enjoy your training! 🙌💪🏊‍♂️ -CM

I never have been able to find it. My lung capacity is some where between double normal to 'dude, you are totally off the charts'. I am guessing it might be some thing related to just burning more fuel than most other people do. Don't know.... I did have asthma as a kid, but not any more. I do get hay fever, just can't figure out why I can't get to that point for breathing. I was watching Sun Yang, and he was breathing every other stroke.... Same with Katy Ledecky. Seems like most of the elite swimmers are doing it for every stroke other than when doing 50 meter sprints. Oh, as far as my lung capacity goes, I know all of the 'full of hot air' jokes....

🤣 @ “dude...you’re off the charts” that makes sense. Yes, breathing on two’s works great too. I feel the same way but realized how to make three’s sustainable and that was changing the rate of my exhale. Once I discovered it, I felt a huge difference. It’s all what works for you (lung capacity, buoyancy, etc.). So it’s good you found your rhythm. 👍

Should the exhaling only partially empty the lungs or fully?
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 3 жыл бұрын
Always partially. If you empty everything out you will sink and you will feel out of breath. The bulk of the exhalation happens right on the roll out so you are able to inhale to replenish the reserve of air you lost. You can start to get a feel of this with demo 1. Enjoy your practice! 🏊‍♂️🙌 -Coach Mandy

So basically if I'm breathing every 3rd stroke then I should breath out most on 3rd stroke?

Why do I roll more on one side. The breathing side.
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE Жыл бұрын
Because you are over rotating due to the fight or flight response of trying to working harder to breathe. There is a specific process and system to go through in order to help you achieve a seamless breath inside the SWIMVICE freestyle program. Check it out at swimvice.com and join our newsletter to stay up to date for more news!

When it came to breathing, several otherwise good coaches left our class to their own devices. "Everyone has their own way" one said to me. There was better instruction on KZbin, but it's so hard to correct your own stroke that valuable time was lost. NIce to see your emphasis on breathing and very good video with one goggle in the water during a breath.

GM CM, My breathing is improving! I implemented your recommendations from this vid and to remember “sips of air” is key! Also I practice breathing every stroke to one side for more reps per 25. Thanks 🙏🏽🏊🏽‍♂️

Hey the coach mandy I've watching swimvice for a couple months now great vids btw very informative and I been using them to be a better swimmer. I do have a question though I have a medical condition when it comes to breathing (Asthma) do you have any advice or any techniques for people like me who can breath better when it comes to freestyle?

Should the inhaling only partially fill the lungs or fully (gasping for air)?

After, watching this video I realized, after I breathe I usually don't exhale until my head is back down in a neutral position and then, I start to exhale slowly, instead of exhaling on the roll back down

Have you been out of breath before watching this video? That can be the root problem. Exhaling on the return helps relax your lungs so you can continue the exchange seamlessly. Keep me posted on your progress. 🙌🏊‍♂️ - Coach Mandy

@@SWIMVICE Thanks, for your reply Coach Mandy, you are correct, usually I can only swim 3 laps without stopping and catching my breathe
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 3 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, got it. Take your time with the first exercise so you start to feel the correct breathing rhythm and exchange consistently. Holding your breath on the return can definitely contribute to feeling out of breath so it’s a good sign you were able to identify this. Enjoy your practice Ray!

I mainly exhale through the mouth underwater, fairly forcefully. Only occasionally through my nose. Why wrong? I've been told late breathing is an issue for me.

If it’s sustainable for you and comfortable for distance, then it works! It’s very personal. As long as you are able to assess whether you are able to get in enough air and feel consistent with the exchange, then it is correct. Most people panic by aggressively exhaling too much causing exhaustion. The important point is to find the correct balance that works for you that does not disrupt your form. Hope this helps clarify! 🙌🏊‍♂️👍 -CM
