I believe the tool will be the same unit set in the preferences

If you go to Windows (Top Tool bar, between "Display" and "Edit Mesh" in the Modelling Tab) then "Settings/Preferences" > "Preferences" > "Settings" You can change the "Working Units" displayed, this will change the grid. your grid squares are representations of those units selected in settings.

Measure tool is also really useful for depth of field, snap one end to camera and the other to the object you want in focus, can also parent one locator to camera and one to object and make a simple script to plug the distance into DOF for animation...It would be really handy if you could easily get dimensions for a polygon's sides....I'm sure theres a mel script for that somewhere though.

Ok. How do you cventer the object within the measurement box? When i click on the object I modeled the measurements are off center and measuring at an angle instead of squared.

You used too many keyboard shortcuts for me to follow along. As someone who's not as familiar with Maya, what you're showing is useful, but the exact how is missing. How you added and selected the mesh/texture, how to snap the measurement to the object, etc.
