I tried this technique last night. I tried to separate the coconut meat from the shell. I couldn't get it all in one piece. I had to cut through the meat multiple x, and I got a lot of little pieces. it's tedious when trying to shave the small ones. The other side came out a little easier. Does it get easier? I know you mentioned to use a butter knife, which I did. Is there another tool/utensil that works also. Thanks! Great channel! Subbing for sure!!
@RunAwayRice9 жыл бұрын
+Besa65 Hi, some coconuts are tougher to crack than others. The older (and drier) the coconut the easier it is to separate from the shell. I get a few that I have to hack at about a dozen or so times before they open. It will get easier with more practice. If you frequently prepare fresh coconut, I would recommend this tool. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006OCS5ZU/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B006OCS5ZU&linkCode=as2&tag=runawayriceyt-20&linkId=A2HJG7YSR4QKM4ITIt helps you to remove the meat very easily. The water did not come out after corkscrewing a hole and then hammering a nail to make a whole. I was able to crack the coconut in half by smashing it with the claw of a hammer and in the process when it cracked I could get the water out. Now that it’s cracked in half I cannot get the meat to separate from the shell by any method and I am about to defenestrate the coconut.

Do you use the same process for the bags of shredded coconut from the grocery store or is that different ?
@BrookNBones8 жыл бұрын
How can you tell if your coconut has gone bad or is rip enough to use? I've recently bought a couple and found pink and black spots inside and the water tasted off from what I was expecting. I didn't feel they were safe to use, and being my first time to try coconut I just threw them out assuming they'd gone bad. Is that actually normal for coconut or did I do the right thing? I've been afraid to buy anymore because I'm not sure if I'm getting something that's rip or gone bad because I know so little about them.
@RunAwayRice8 жыл бұрын
Most coconuts sold at the grocery stores are ready to eat. When buying coconuts--the first thing to check is to see if it's wet or leaking--indicating a cracked shell. Inspect the eyes and the area around it to make sure there's no mold. Press on the eyes to make sure there are no soft spots. The coconut should feel heavy and when shaken you should hear a fair amount of water inside. You did the right thing by not eating your coconuts. Sometimes, even after passing all the tests, you find a coconut that's rancid inside. I would return the bad coconuts to your store for a refund and to make them aware of the poor quality. Good Luck!

I would like to make healthy coconut chips for snacking. What would you recommend for slicing coconut to make large flakes? What is the best way to prepare them for baking into snack chips?
@RunAwayRice8 жыл бұрын
+Bonnie Meyer Hi Bonnie, for coconut chips, I use a vegetable peeler to cut the strips. You can also use a mandoline with a flat slicer. The recipe is really easy--after preparing the coconut, spread on a baking sheet. Bake at 300 degrees F for 15-20 minutes. Stir about half-way through so they bake evenly. Bake longer if you like them crunchy. I know you want to keep it healthy, but you can optionally dust them with powdered sugar before baking. Good Luck! I am off to make a batch as well. Yum!!

Hi Trang, Do you know how to chose the young cononut as your coconut in this video.
@RunAwayRice9 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne, the coconuts I used in the video are more on the mature side as they are darker in color and have more meat. The young coconuts will be much lighter in color and the meat will be soft and gel like. When picking young coconut, look for ones that are closer to a white color. Check the coconut for any signs of mold. Push on the coconut, especially around the eyes for any soft spots which means it's starting to go bad. Next shake the coconut. There should be lots of coconut water in a young coconut. If there are bad, moldy coconuts nearby touching your coconut and you are not sure, don't buy it. Mold spreads to surrounding coconuts. Hope that helps.

RunAwayRice, does the coconut meat taste and feel like a raw potato? I cracked it open, washed it out, and honestly could not tell the difference. Did I choose a 'not ripe' one?
@RunAwayRice8 жыл бұрын
+Cameron Johnson Hi, did you buy a white/green shell (young) or a brown shell (mature) coconut? The younger coconut meat is gelatinous and doesn't have much flavor. The mature coconut meat is dense and rich tasting, but not quite as moist or starchy like a potato.

@andrewwheeler65507 жыл бұрын
It's okay to have them ALL THE TIME! Coconut fat is surprisingly good; not only does bacteria not ferment it, the fatty acids in coconut (Lauric and calpyristic acids) are antimicrobials, so they help the gut clean which is vital to good health. It also doesn't contribute to high blood sugar levels like carbs do, putting less stress on the pancreas, while being an easy fat (Being a medium chain fatty acid) for the body to convert to glucose for energy use as it needs it.
@andrewwheeler65507 жыл бұрын

Hi Sue, removing the coconut from the green husk is tricky and somewhat of a dangerous undertaking. You need to hack at it with a machete to remove the husk and extract the coconut. You can find videos on KZbin if you'd like to see the process.
