If you find difficult to drink the water because it's too hot (even though it did not boil) then it's probably at the right temperature. Mate is drank REALLY hot, so i recommend that you drink one small sip at a time.

U can cold brew yerba. especially when u are person like me who hates everything that is more than roomtemperature

If you brew cold, it’s best to use a Paraguayan brand like Krupi. Otherwise, it will taste somewhat bland. But yes, cold mate or terere is wonderful, especially with fruit juice and ice.

@@edwardlygma2683 I know, I'm from Argentina lol, it's called Tereré. Here we use juice but you can always use just water, although personally i prefer it with juice when drinking cold (and a lot of ice)

After repeated refills, do you have to do anything to the "mountain" of yerba to mix up the wettest and driest parts to keep the strength consistent?

I like to keep refilling the water hole (avoiding the mountain) until the strength noticeably starts weakening. Once that happens, I'll start wetting some of the mountain on every refill until it's completely flooded.

Is it safe to varnish the outside of a calabash gourde? Is the outer layer pourous in any way? The outside of my calabash gourde has become dull and now has a matte look when dry. I was thinking to apply a varnish that makes it looks polished. However, I wouldn't want to do this if the varnish could be absorbed.

How do you heat your water to this temps without any equipment

Just let the water reach boiling temp, then dump it in a thermos and let it cool down for around 20 minutes without the lid on. That's how we do it when we don't have an electric kettle.

Some brands taste very close to green tea, but most taste earthy, grassy, soil-y, and woody. The more you drink, the more your palate can detect the subtler notes.

Also, instead of adding water you can add milk, it's delicious too, I drink mate like this since I was a child because my grandma used to make it for me in the afternoons when I came home from school so I'm used to drinking mate like this instead of water 👀😅

You’re saying add HOT milk INSTEAD of hot water or along with the water? That sounds great. I think that sounds really good . When I make Yerba in a French press by adding the 70F degree water, I often add a bit of almond milk, which tastes yummy with Yerba! If I feel like a bit more of a sweet drink I will make it that way and add a bit of honey. Thanks for the idea!

It seems weird that you're not supposed to steep it with the hot water at all. Just fill it up and drink it quickly each time 8 times or so. I suppose once I do it, I will understand, but filling a gourd 8 times doesn't seem like something I could do at work. It would be really time consuming and I imagine I'd have to pee. I mean, the first couple fillings aren't going to give you a lot of caffeine, right?

@@danielgustavoIII I did try it with a good bombilla but it ended up being a waste of money for me. After perfecting french press brewing method instead, I'll likely never use the bombilla and gourd method again. This guy does have great info, though. I ended up buying a good food thermometer to know if I was heating my water to the correct temperature and it turns out his advice about waiting for bubbles to form on the bottom of the pot is absolutely perfect. Just like he said, when those bubbles form, put your finger in the water and you should be able to hold it in the water for just about 2 seconds before you feel like you might burn your finger. At that temperature, it's the perfect recommended temperature. I confirmed with a good $15 thermometer. So, I spent a good $50 on yerba mate supplies and only ended up using the $20 french press regularly. But, at least I know it's mate how mate is supposed to taste! And I no longer give myself diarrhea from brewing it too hot or too long, LOL.

I want to tell you that mate with a straw is ideal for free time, picnics or sharing with family or friends (you did not lose money). For when you are short of time you can prepare it with the French press and if you add milk it is delicious. Forget about thermometers, over time you will get some rich mates. Greetings.
