Great video, Rob. I just had someone who shoots Sony message me two days ago wondering why the flash wouldn't fire consistently. I said to make sure wireless flash is on and the e-front curtain shutter off. Turns out it was the e-front curtain shutter. Not sure how that worked out but that was the solution.

You solved my problem! I couldn't figure out why I was getting random misfires using my Sony a7iii and Godox V350s while I was shooting in continuous mode. This was especially frustrating as I was using it to take focus stacking shots for macro photography, and I would end up with up to a fourth of my shots being dark. So frustrating! As always, despite my best efforts to be thorough I have an extremely important afterthought... One more solution is to UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE, especially if you have a newer camera body. Camera manufacturers tweak their flash systems, both with new camera releases and firmware updates, to mess with third party flash compatibility. By doing so they can increase the amount of users reporting problems and decrease trust in third party systems, in an attempt to get people to buy into first-party speedlight systems. I think this is beyond stupid considering no camera manufacturer makes studio lights, but it's a reality. So a lot of times third party flash companies have to do firmware updates just to keep things working right.
@hmoobs15 жыл бұрын
Interesting. How do I update the firmware of my godox AD200. I have had misfiring with my A7iii. Thank you
@rugfoot4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts Rob - really helpful. The flashes' HSS don't work either when sitting on the camera so it's not the trigger. But someone else suggested updated firmware and I'd started down that route until finding that Godox don't do easily accessible updates for Mac. There is a workaround so that's my next option. I was also tempted to get hold of a Sony flash just to see if that's an issue - but then reluctant to fall into that trap that you mentioned.

Wow insane.
@MandurahConsumer Жыл бұрын
That makes little sense to me. While most (all) camera manufacturers have their own speedlights, none offers studio flash and they do need to support HSS and any other tricks. I _have_ seen a Panasonic firmware update specifically to improve compatibility with third-party studio flash.

I am facing the same issue with my V1C for Canon and can't for the life of me figure out what could be causing it, and I am using the V1C as an On-Camera flash unit. I had so many misfires at an event last week that I was absolutely embarrassed at missing so many critical shots. I realized that the issues started about an hour into my event even though I was shooting at relatively low power values between 1/16th and 1/4 power. I have looked at it again this morning trying out several test shots and again experienced a couple of misfires. No pressure on the unit, leisurely testing and still misfiring. Hmm, I am really beginning to question my purchase. SmH

Got one of these flashes from a thrift store and someone left batteries in it that leaked badly. Make sure you take the batteries out when storing them. Anyway these have all kinds of unexpected pieces inside compared to basic flash units. It has a structured light laser that doubles as a lidar, a fiber optic light sensor that measures the flash intensity directly, an IR remote control, a flash field adjustment mechanism, and a real pulse forming network. I did notice the flash tube itself was very small for the power delivered and would not live very long with full power shots.❤

I use rechargeable batteries and don't have much if any of a problem. I may have a few misfires, but I for one can never tell if I just undershot my recycle time. Either way, it's never been a problem for me yet, and the only time my flashes stop firing is when my speedlite gets overheated and stops shooting. I will note that I just bought my trigger and receivers very very recently, and they all came with the latest firmware. So it's entirely possible that either the firmware or even slight design fixes may have made things work better. People should always keep their firmware updated on these things. It's not the easiest thing to do with Godox, but the Northrups have an excellent, thorough video on it and even an easy to remember web forwarding link to check the firmware list. But I can't imagine using disposable batteries. It's too damn easy to leave the power switch on, and even if you don't, they still take significant power to use. It's not like a TV remote where the batteries last forever. Batteries are friggen expensive. If it starts causing problems, I'll have to switch. I do keep my batteries charged up between shoots and am always switching them out every chance possible. But I don't think everyone should be telling people to default to friggen Duracell. These units DO work with rechargeable (maybe brand, design, and voltage of the set of batteries are all factors…DON'T KNOW). Whether or not some problems do come up and whether or not those minor problems justify the added cost should be left to each individual photographer to determine. Not “only use disposable batteries because reasons.” I understand the argument made that rechargeable have lower power levels or whatever, but that doesn't necessarily mean the triggers won't work with them. It leaves me wondering how many people think it's a battery issue when it's really something else among the reasons you've outlined. Also note, I use EBL rechargeable batteries from Amazon. They claim advanced technology that makes them deteriorate more slowly… Not sure to what extent it's true, but they work incredibly well for me.

Can you please talk with Adorama & Godox to talk to them about updating the FIRMWARE for the Remote to communicate properly with Rechargeable Batteries (very very specifically Eneloops, at the very very least).
