This is the introduction to the course How to Process Your Emotions: Essential Skills to Resolve Depression, Anxiety, and Other Intense Emotions.
When I talk about processing emotions, I mean we literally need to go through a process to regulate and resolve our emotions. In this video, you’re going to learn what emotion processing is, what gets in the way of it, and how you can work through your emotions so they don’t build up in a harmful way in your life.
Over the next 30 videos I’m going to teach you skills that help you process through not only feelings of anxiety and depression, but emotions in general. This is how to work through big, painful emotions. You could call this emotional intelligence or controlling or coping with your emotions, but it’s better than that. It’s actually resolving your emotions. Knowing how to process emotions is essential to living a happy life, to having healthy relationships, to being a good boss or friend or lover. Research shows over and over that these are the skills that help people live a good life, but most people have never even heard of them.
This course uses exercises, video, audio, quotes, visuals, narratives, short readings, workbook exercises, and links to extended resources. If you want to access all of these essential resources, ad-free, in one convenient location, you can buy the full course here: courses.therap...

I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofje...

Emotional regulation is a process: 1) identify: what emotion it is. Notice them, check them in, name them. Feel into them. 2) pause: calm body and mind instead of jumping to solutions to make the emotions go away. 3) explore: what is the function and purpose of this emotion. What is this emotion trying to tell you. Check cognitive distortions, distorted ways of thinking that make it hard to see our emotions 4) choose: what to do with these emotions. Take action, practice acceptance, etc Emotional processing is a skill that can be learned Emotions are deeper than thoughts or behaviors

I've been asking my different therapists over the years what "processing" your emotions means (they kept telling me I wasn't doing it and needed to) but none of them could give me an explanation that made sense. Your analogy actually makes sense to me, and I feel like such a weight lifted off of me just being able to understand this one thing that has eluded me for so long. Thank you!!!!!

@@mithalisanghvi140 it takes time. I had to learn to trust, that was a biggie for me, to accept that not everyone was nasty or hurtful and that we could have differences of opinion without name calling and also to understand that emotions and feelings are actually healthy and not something to run away from. It is challenging but give yourself permission to sit with the feeling, cry if you need to and allow yourself to heal 🙏🏻

I've realized just how much I've had to suppress my emotions in the work place to seem 'professional'. The amount of times I would sit at my desk literally biting my lip to stop myself from crying. My new motto for this year is "express instead of suppress". I'm trying to let myself just feel whatever comes up. I also think as a kid, it was easy for adults to tell me that I was being 'bad' if I expressed anger, and I only saw unhealthy anger in the adults around me. As a 30 year old now, I get anxious anytime I feel angry and I have to remind myself that it is okay to feel angry.

The bad part is only on KZbin can I find genuinely passionate helpful therapists like you. In reality most therapist and even psychiatrists can be petty and combative and just way too personal and not professional, which then everyone says well they're just humans too. If you have a deeply chaotic past they either don't believe you or accuse you of embellishing, and eventually conclude you are a story teller, and just a real lack of beleif in your words. Good doctors only exist on digital screens for entertainment.

i think one important thing is to react to things very early. one big difference i saw in school with those who got bullied and those who didnt were those who confronted the bullies almost right away and those who just let it go on and on and on. same things goes with everything you have to attack it early. otherwise it spreads like a cancer.

I just found you. Omg. You have given me hope. I thought you processed emotions by feeling it for a “minute,” making a decision about it, then moving on. What I’ve learned is that worked for a lot of crap. It is not working for losing both my parents after having them 54 years. I also connected with a therapist TODAY who when asked her philosophy on mind body connection got excited…there is basically no other way. I had no idea I couldn’t talk my body into calming down even though I’ve tried grounding. Now that I know it’s from the bottom up, I get it! It’s been a banner day for me in this spiral down and today it took an upturn, in large part to your work here. Thank you very humbly. 🙏

You're so empathic and non judgemental. It really resonates well with me. There is great hope in knowing that working through emotions is a skill that can be learned and that not knowing how to process them in a healthy way is not due to some inherent deficiency.

Hello! I‘ve always had a very intense emotional world inside of me. I always was told that I am too much to deal with and have been hurt very often throughout my life. And especially the last few months I started to lose my rebellious attitude and started to bow for everyone. But now I‘ve realised that there are so many beautiful emotions inside of me and I want to accept them again. I‘m going to watch one video of this playlist a day and I‘m really happy that you put these videos out there!

Thank you for offering the videos from this course on KZbin, Emma. I have watched all 34 and have taken notes that I re-read and have regularly used the writing prompts mentioned. This has helped me to practice identifying and processing emotions as I strive to release trauma that has been stored in my body for decades. I have learned so much in a relatively short amount of time! I am so grateful for your gift of explaining complex concepts in very understandable terms, for your help in applying these concepts, and for your obvious caring and generous nature. Thank you so very much.

Your course and generosity by placing the course free on KZbin and also making the course affordable to all those that want to learn more is truly inspirational. Bless you and and a big heart felt/sent thank you

Thank you for sharing this information. I was suffering one of the worst panic attacks in my life induced by alcohol abuse. I was woken out of my sleep by a hallucination of a fork dropping on the ground and hearing a voice tell me they were coming for me. Then I slipped into sleep paralysis which I wrestled out of through prayer.

Coming across your channel was a sign lol I love these they’re amazing and relaxing! I definitely didn’t grow up expressing emotions or having that emotional connection with my parents. But now as an adult and currently in therapy myself, it’s been tough learning how to be vulnerable and expressing my emotions in a healthier way and just not running away from it. Thank you for you this! 🙏🏽🦋

I'm so happy to find these videos. My mom bragged about "breaking" me when I was little so she could control me. Basically, it numbed me towards emotions for the rest of my life. I'm in my 50s now and just figuring out why I'm different and broken. Its time to change that.

Listening to this introduction made me realize how much I’ve learned to suppress my emotions through the years. I always knew, but I feel like I have a better understanding on the effects on the mind as well as how the body involuntarily responds and causes further derailing when trying to connect with others. Thank you so much for creating this course! I can’t wait to get started ❤️

Just had an idea... Being numb emotionally after trauma.... its functional managment of the huge loads of negative emotions. Society does not allow emotions at work, at the store, even many families do not allow emotions. Oh, and even in relationships, where emotions are allowed, when there are a lot of them (I mean too too many emotions) no relatively normal person in normal life can manage that many emotions from their loved one. One of the therapists Ive been to - went to her for a year before she retired.... she said to me, that once I begin processing my emotions from my bad and traumatic childhood and from the toxicity in my family of origin, i will never stop crying. And this has proved to be so true - I tear up frequently (outside work) and sometimes even sob for a few minutes and then feel better. The majority of relatively normal people never get it and dont have the time to listen to all of it, so we are destined to go to therapy because that is the only place that we can really share our story in full. And sharing is 50% of the healing process.

Thank you so much for this video. I have gained the courage to fire my therapist and look for a new one. I was asking for help and coping skills and dealing with emotions, but when I asked I was told that therapists "aren't supposed to tell you how to live your life". I'm not asking for you to make decisions for me, I'm asking for help to process trauma and emotions in a healthy manor. Me just talking and hearing pretty much no feedback isn't working, it isn't helping. I feel like I have to do all the work myself and it is so stressful. Again thank you for the tips, and confirming my suspicion that I could get more help. (A lot of my trauma was gaslighting, and being told I was wrong).
