Mr. Powell, being a new learner to Carbide Create, you solved some issues I have been having. Thank you. Very informative and don't worry about length when you providing such a great product. You maintained a steady speed, enough for viewers to keep up, stop the video and take time to think. I had to write down some notes for the problems you solved. I'll also check out your new video to see what changes CC has implemented. Thanks again for a great video. I have subscribed....

I am 100% Combat Wounded Disabled vet. My wife and I bought a CNC as part of my rehab and to have fun doing something together. We're starting a business creating flags, military appreciation gifts (we live near a base), shadow boxes, ect. We appreciate you taking the time to walk us through your process. Your time and effort will help us shave off some of the learning curve. We'll send some pics of our stuff once we get proficient. This is an official Attaboy from us!

Jordan as soon as It's up and running I'll let you know. I'm still in the process of building it. I'm a stay at home dad with a 4yr old and a 6 month old so I don't have a ton of time to work on it. Usually after dinner and the kids are in bed. But so far... I can tell you that the quality of the parts are amazing! I'm super impressed. It's physically together as of last night, Now I have to wire everything up and tune it. Once I get my waste board flattened its off to the races. I'm hoping that I can make my first cuts tonight.

Good video Chris. I followed the video making one change. Instead of drawing each individual box for the white stripes, I drew one for the short stripes then copied that box and drug it to its respective place. Same for the long stripes. Shaves off a little time.

Chris, I enjoyed your video. I wish I had seen it when I first got my Shapeoko XXL a few months ago. Question - Do you ever have a problem carving stars on larger flags? I have made a few flags that are roughly 20 inches tall and 39 wide (using glued panels from Lowes and 90 degree v). If the board is not perfectly flat then there can be a difference in the size of the stars from one end of the Union to the other. Have you ever experienced that with your 11-inch flags?
@ChrisPowellFSD
@ChrisPowellFSD 4 жыл бұрын
The key to a perfect v carve is to have your panel as flat as possible. It’s hard to find perfectly flat wood in the big box stores, so I usually position them with the bow facing down in the middle, and pull the edges flat against the wasteboard with clamps.

Hey Chris, Watched several of your videos, great work by the way. Can you answer a question for me. Why do you initially set the parameter at 21.38 inches but you cut your stock to exactly 21 inches. I saw one of your videos that showed you cutting the stock at exactly 21 inches. Please let me know Thanks

It’s just easier to measure that. If your stripes look shifted to one side, you can just shift them a hair in the program.

I’m sure I could do this better with affinity designer or procreate on my iPad. I’m definitely rewatch your video a few more times and maybe I’ll get it.

Hi Chris. Great videos, thanks. I watched this one and the one that shows you staining and burning the pledge flag. One thing you didn’t mention is where the color in the EGA comes in. For the EGA flag fo you carve the EGA first and then paint it black and then sand, before carving the stripes? I’m sure there’s more than one way to do it just wondering what your method is. Thanks again
@ChrisPowellFSD
@ChrisPowellFSD 5 жыл бұрын
For the black flags, I always paint them before any machining. For the EGA flag with the red and blue epoxy, I machine those first, then spray them with a few coats of lacquer to seal them. Then I fill the carved areas with the dyed epoxy. After it cures, I sand them smooth and apply a few more coats of lacquer.

I also had issues with the boolean feature but you gave a solution in the comments. Could you please add a link or picture as to what specific bits to use/buy? I'm waiting on my shapeoko to be shipped to my house and I'm trying to find the specific bits for the best price/quality. I know you said 1/8 inch endmill bits and 1/4 inch vee bit (60 degrees). @ChrisPowellFSD
@ChrisPowellFSD 5 жыл бұрын
Marc Riv in Carbide motion, there should be buttons on your run screen that say feedrate +10, feedrate reset, and feedrate -10. If you keep clicking +10, you can turn it up to 200%. I just do this so if I’m cutting harder materials, like oak, I can leave it at 100%. Sometimes I’ll even turn the v carve sections down if it sounds like I’m putting too much load on the bit, or it isn’t cutting smoothly. The numbers in the video are a good, safe starting point.

Hey Chris Nice video! I'm new to the Shapeoko and have a quick question about the carve times for this project. I didn't see the estimated carve times displayed under each of the tool path you configured. I tried to reproduce what you did with the same or similar bits and feeds and speeds, but mine shows 2 hrs and 48 minutes. With 1hr 40 minutes of that for the Marine Logo. Is that about what yours would have been. I did the logo with the Carbide #302 60 degree bit. I tried with a .25 inch 30 degree v-bit for the Logo, but that would have taken over three hours just for the LOGO. Does this seem correct to you?

Chris, great video. Just what I was looking for. I looked at the time it would take and the EGA alone was 87 minutes. I know you said check feeds and speeds, I have them pretty much matched to your design. The issue I this in the svg has alot of extra nodes. I can't post an image here, but when I grab the same svg as you (wiki commons) and import it into carbide create, some of the individual lines are now "outlines", each of the black hashes around the globe in your image are just a straight line, when I import they are now rectangles, meaning 4 nodes to a line. If you send me an email or a way that I can share the images maybe you can help me figure out how to fix it. I have looked at the svg in carbide create, vectric and fusion 360. ( i have a trial of fusion). I have the same issue with a squadron patch logo that is an svg, the ring around the patch shows in the svg as 2 circles (inner and outer). -Thanks Harold

Excellent video!! I'm grateful that you took every step and explained it in detail. I'm a definite rookie to this and up to this point I have only used my CNC for cutting some slots for trophy bases, but I'm eager to venture off into exploring the potential of the machine. I watched this video twice to get the overall idea and then watched it one bit at a time while I created the artwork on another computer while pausing this one. I think I did everything correct, except I didn't have a 1/4" 60 degree V bit but programmed in for my 1/2' 60 degree V bit. I don't see where it will matter since the angle is the same and the depth is programmed the same as the 1/4' bit. When everything was said and done I noticed that the time for each stage is as follows: Stripes - 1 hour, 26 minutes, Marine emblem - 10 hours, 39 minutes, and stars, 11 minutes. Please tell me I've done something wrong!! I can't believe this would take over 12 hours to complete! Thanks for a great video!

@@ChrisPowellFSD Thanks for the reply. I ran the job today. The stripes came out perfect but I think the V carving had two problems. First, I think the 1/2" V bit has a flat tip on it rather than a full point which was noticeable at the tip of the stars. Also the bit cut too deep. As it was working on the detailed area of the emblem, it was completely taking out many of the adjacent tiny details. Oh well, sometimes the horse throws you but you just have to get up, dust off your hat, and say "&%#($%" and get back on. :) Thanks again for your help!

I really enjoyed your video. I'm new to this and am trying different platforms out to see how user-friendly the are to create designs before I buy one of these CNC's (leaning towards the Shapeoko now). I just tried making this flag using Carbide Create, following your video step by step. I'm sure it'll get easier as I familiarize myself with this program. I spent about 2 hours on this. My biggest issue (time waster) was finding a Flag SVG file that uploaded all of the stars. Many files didn't. At the end I uploaded a similar image like the one you used into Inkscape and made it into an SVG file. Carbide Create also stalls alot. I had many moments where the program "wasn't responding". Other than that, I think you explained the process well. Thanks for taking the time to make the video!

@ChrisPowellFSD
@ChrisPowellFSD 3 жыл бұрын
You really shouldn’t have to set a depth for doing v carves. Your z zero might be set too low, or you might have the wrong zero selected. You can select the top and bottom of the material for the start point. Make sure you’re selecting the top of the material if that’s where you’re setting your z zero. Also, it’s very important to have flat material and a level wasteboard. Make sure you’ve surfaced your wasteboard. I find most material has a little twist to it, so I position the bowed part down in the middle and use clamps to pull the edges flat.

Thanks for the great video. Very informative. One question i cant seem to get past, on the logo am I correct that you ungroup the the design and the border you copied prior to setting it inside the flag. I think I followed you direction step by step. Once I have placed the design inside the flag and do the boolean subtract function and delete all the extra lines I go to the tool path and with the design ungrouped I cant capture the entire design because it was ungrouped. Hope this makes sense. I am sure this is operator error, but this has me stumped. Any help would be great for this newb

Thanks. Yea I ungrouped it. You can actually create 2 groups. If you group everything inside the ega together first, then group that to the outline, after you move it you can just ungroup the outline from the ega.

Chris Powell Hi Chris. Thanks for the reply. I figured it out. Well, some of it. Using the two-sided tape kinda creates a situation where where the stock isn’t exactly “level”. And when dealing with very tight increments of depth, it was affecting it. But after I figured that out, I still couldn’t get the depth of the V-bit right. I used your settings and it wasn’t really cutting deep enough. I jumped it up to .1 depth per pass, and that was too deep. I’m guessing there’s a sweet spot in there somewhere. I’m using the 302 bit from Carbide. Anyway, thank you again for the reply. I’m gonna give it another try and if I have problems, I’ll definitely reach out. Happy New Year.

Great tips in the video. I was wondering a question. I am using a current version of carbide create and twice the bit ran through part of the work it had already cut. Safe z was set correctly. All it was doing was pocketing out a large letter, then at the bottom of that pocket it was supposed to have cut something else. The tool went to the other side of the large letter I had pocketed out but it did not go above the top of the board. The bit went right through the large letter. I'm in the hole on this project because it did the exact same thing on another piece.

@@ChrisPowellFSD It doesn't chop off the letter in the simulation so everything is ok there. it was when it ran and the bit did not clear the letter that was previously carved. How ever, I did find the bolts loose on the feet that hold down the rails that the v wheels run on. Could that have been the problem? I didnt even notice any movement. I'll try it again and come back here and let you know. I did tighten them down. Great videos by the way on carbide. I sure could use some advice? When adding a bit to the library, is "Diameter" the width of the shank or the width of the bit size like a 1 inch bit with a 1/4 shank? And, is ""Depth" the same as depth per pass? Also, I have the newest one. I really haven't had any trouble with tool change.
