Such a great tool & to be able to re-visit whenever we need to with the handy time stamps! So helpful to practice the Sanskrit pronunciation so we can fully embody these ancient teachings, honour them & show our utter appreciation for being able to share the gifts of yoga to the world! Such a blessing to have this video as part of your 200-HR YTT.

Thanks, Ally, for this. I’m in a 300 hour training in LA and they are all about Sanskrit. Though I have been teaching for years, my audience needs the English versions, but for the training I need to be up on my Sanskrit, so bravo!!!

Thanks for making this video. Sanskrit does not drop the "a" at the end of words. That does happen in Hindi because of the schwa reduction rules. So, in Sanskrit, it is "asana", in Hindi, "asan". Camel is "Ushtrasana" (Uṣṭrāsana) in Sanskrit, so it has the "sh" after the first letter.

Thank you for this, especially all the time stamps. These will be so useful for returning. Also, have to say I loved the Yoga is Dead podcast series. I listened a couple of years ago. I may need to revisit.

I really appreciate you breaking down why you feel learning Sanskrit is important. I love that you study with Indian teachers and add their names here. I agree it is so important to centre Indian teachers in our learning. I think you come from a very sweet, kind and caring place. I will say one thing that concerns me slightly. While I am far from a scholar in Sanskrit it was really important to me to pronounce Sanskrit words properly and understand the why and how of the language so I have taken courses from Indian teachers (university professors of the language) and many of the pronunciations you say are incorrect. I was the same for many years until I did proper trainings. My biggest concern is that you hold teacher trainings and you have learning materials where you are teaching people to say the word incorrectly. I highly encourage you to take a high level of Sanskrit so this can change in future trainings. You may have done so already. I had no idea I was pronouncing things wrong for many years. Then I studied and understand why there is a line over some letters, why the sound is different when there are two A’s vs one A. What is a dental sound, aspirated sound etc. These are all very important to the proper pronunciation of Sanskrit. I don’t want to come across as rude at all. We are all unlearning and learning together. It’s just that you are training teachers so it so important. If you are looking for a short but comprehensive training I would highly suggest www.yogaphilosophy.com/ has a very good Sanskrit training. This is not a sales pitch. I have no connection to them. It is just a wonderful resource.
