Legend, thanks Kenny. The crank thread was mostly stripped on my second hand bike which made a crank puller useless. You've saved me a lot of frustration.

Guys, if You have no pulley for 3 piece cranks, (like me) just unscrew bolts by 1/3 of the lenght, and drive around, giving load to cranks, like going higher gear uphill, or standing while pedaling, sooner or later crank will come off. Just dont unbolt screws all the way, or cranks will fall.

Well they say you learn something new everyday & that's exactly what happened watching this great video. As I was camping with the kids & needed to fix my sons mountain bike with a new crank, as the pedals were stripped like in the video.. With minimal tools at hand, I lent the bolt protruding out a little against the tow bar of the car & hit it with only a 1/2in extension bar & job done... Thank again for the informative video & nice car you have there in the back ground buddy👍👍

This is GREAT! I am an artist, I weld new stuff, from old stuff and get old broken bikes that I use parts from so I wasn't gonna spend $$ for a "special" tool (urgh) and all the bike forums say using anything but the puller is equal to blasphemy, so no help there. Anyway thanks again:-)

exactly what I had to do with an octalink crank. those aluminium threads are a nightmare if the insert doesn't rest bang on the spindle you'll strip the threads for sure and other than buying a crank puller this is your only job...also try very very slowly riding around with the crank bolts out that often loosens the crank arms. great video.

Hey if you want to not damage your cogs by smacking them with a hammer then the alternative is ! loosen the bottom bracket wiht a B B remover tool then the axl has room to move . you then flip it over do the drive side is facing up and then put support on the frame so the B B axel is off the ground . you get an old thick bolt or something to smack the axl from the other side , as the axl has room to move due to you lessening the bottom bracket with a remover tool on the non drive side you will find that the cogs will be hard up against the bike frame giving you enough pressure to punch the axl out of the drive crank . This way you wont damage the old crank if ever you need it for parts or something else .

great fix. when trying to replace the bottom bracket on a trek, the puller simply pulled the threads out of the crank. this is a good plan b.
@cndjx
@cndjx 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. A rubber mallet and a longer bolt that is threaded all the way should do the trick. A longer bolt that is threaded all the way would prevent the threads to the bottom bracket from being damaged from the mallet strikes.

The idea is good, but you have to be both brutal and careful - I also used this technique on my old bike 3-4 times (poor quality bearings kept getting smashed) and eventually bent the smaller sprocket. It is a lot harder to straiten it than it is to bend it. All in all, Kenny, very good work on the DIY.

This must be part of how the bike companies encourage us all to get out of our cars and ride bikes, by making it so you need 300 dollars worth of special tools to fix a 250 dollar bicycle. They don't even put master links on chains any more.... no, you need a special tool for that too. Oh, and do you know how many different sizes of spoke wrench there are? Four? Hahaha, try again!!! If you want a good laugh, go into a bike shop and ask for a "universal spoke wrench".... lots of fun for the whole family!
@Trucker1957

Amen to that. I am trying to repair a bike that I got for free from the town recycle yard. I managed to get the freewheel off without the special tool, but the chain-ring on the crank is bent, and couldn't figure out how to get it off without the puller. Loved the good old days when you could fix a bike without special tools Thanks for the video Kenny.

A park tools toolkit is about $300 for everything you could need to repair/maintain bikes. As for a crank puller, those are about $20. I get what you're saying, but bicycles are machines and machines require certain tools to repair. And you can get chains with masterlinks. As for a $250 bike, you know what they say, a cheap bike is an expensive bike.

I will give to you gift of thought. Everybody stop doing old school stupid. Take an automotive tie rod ball joint separator tool known as a "Pickle Fork" place it behind crank between crank and the bottom bracket cup housing. Strike it with heavy hammer. You may need to place it on opposite side. The crank set will come off as will the non-drive crank arm. When you put cranks on place a small amount of grease on the shoulders of the crank axle.
@InDaBurbs

Joyce Long now, where did I leave that pickle fork? Dang nabbit, I know I had it. Musta left it by the turkey smoker. But really Joyce, how many people have a pickle fork? If you do, you are probably more self sufficient than 99% of mankind, so good on you.

Menno Venema Suntour is not hard to get and is not very expensive, in the early 90's and before they were Shimano's only real competitor and had a full range of products, cheap to expensive, but Shimano indexed shifting just beat out Suntour. Their gear was great I am still riding a pair of Suntour XC Pro cranks, but since the 2000's and they revived the brand as a budget brand. Additionally with the square taper BB, you can fit on any crank, and the one Kenny is using, that Shimano, I would consider an upgrade. Anyways, great video, I misplaced my crank arm puller, and need to get off a crank on my commuter and this will work great. From one Hicks to another, thanks Kenny.

I don't "jive". I give the straight shit. It's up to the consumer. After all...it's their money. However...it's also their safety if they want to buy mismatched parts. If they want to use parts that aren't matching, I get it all on video and they sign a release. That way, I'm not responsible for their decision. If they won't do that, then I don't work on their bike.
@andezbox

yes so it depends on how anal and picky you want to get , if you can justify spending money on a product that has fooled you to think that it is unsafe if it is not brand new then by all means.
