That's a lot of extra work. Make it piece of drywall an inch bigger all around the whole, then cut the drywall to fit the whole leaving the paper still on the whole piece. Put piece in and mud it. Done no screws no 2x4 overwith!!!

Might as well put a sheet of paper and paint over it. As long as you dont see it problem solved right? Do the job right or dont do it at all

You are describing a California patch. I have always thought there could be a problem down the line with peeling paper which was left on.

It’s not really repaired then. You just covered the hole but it’s not nearly as strong as any of the drywall around it.

One of my favorite go-to repairs…it gets used the most between my own projects and those I help others with.

as someone who does not work with drywall, this almost seems neat. but i saw a different method that does not involve any screws and looked so much cleaner. cut a circular hole and leave the paper on, then cut a that same circular hole in the drywall, jam the circle in because it fits so well, then mud up the inserted circle with the paper on it. i think that works better than this. unless they're trolling. then never mind.

It sounds like you are describing a California-patch. That is how most people fix small holes like this (me included). It works well, and doesn't require any 2x4s or screws. All you need to do is get a piece of drywall that is 1-2 inches wider than the hole, remove the excess sheetrock (leave the paper on though) put some joint compound on the inside of the wall, put some on the edges of the patch, put the patch in the hole, and make sure the paper adheres to the wall. Then just put some more mud on the wall, sand it down, and paint. For bigger holes (that don't have a stud) you need to use this method though. Or, if you want to be an ass who does unnecessary shit, you can patch a 2x2 hole like this.

Do a California Patch instead. So much faster and no screws needed.

I like the idea and have seen it used before. Personally, I would have just use a less thicker board with two screws, one on top and one below. I would have used one screw in the middle as a handle to be able to help slide the board into the hole and get it up behind the drywall. Then I would have used a piece of drywall cut just larger than that of the hole, approximately 2-2.5” all the way around. Score the backside of the piece you cut to the approximate dimension of the hole needed so it fits snugly. Bend the pieces you scored to break and peel them back away to leave the paper and use that as your tape. Insert the piece of drywall into the hole with the paper overlapping the hole. Use a screw to secure the drywall patch piece to wood board and use mud around the paper and feather it to give you a, what I consider, much cleaner way to repair a hole of that size.

Can I hang a TV off that piece of wood if there is no stud where I need it?

100% Yes. The bigger the better.

Not a good idea. Hang a TV to this 2 x 4 piece and all the weight transfers to the four screws in the drywall which can only hold what drywall can hold (a picture for example). Use a TV bracket which will span two studs.
