daniel ryan all you did was bodge your wheel. Let's see how long your repairs last
@billinski422 жыл бұрын
If you want a cheap job then follow this. The reason you spend a lot with a professional is 1) the entire wheel back & front will be sand blasted, 2) all blemishes removed, 3) filled as required, 4) powder coated several times & baked hard, 5) several coats of heavy duty lacquer. You always get what you pay for.

I kept seeing videos about having to paint your wheels to repair them. You've demonstrated the way to do it right! You will save many people a lot of money.

Superb video as I’ve never seen any wheel refurb company in Ireland get them back to factory even when they charge €150 a wheel. Hence I was able to preserve the spoke on 20 inch 759i Bmw G30 wheel and just use your technique on the section that was damaged. I ended up using 3000 wet sanding and the finish was almost too polished like an E46 M3 19 inch diamond cut from factory. Thanks so much for this. Best solution out there

Hi mate just wanted to say I followed your tutorial. I have a bmw 1 series with the polished shiny lips. They are the optional 18" Alloys in polished silver and black. I managed to kerb one alloy few weeks ago. Well my repair came out superb. You can't even notice where it was now. I used scholl s20 black Polish after 2000 grit wet sanding. Many thanks 👌👌👌👌

People trying to chime in by adding their own backhand compliments and slidding them criticism in, we see you, you ain't slick. This dude did a good job and you know what? it didn't require painting, just sprayed clear to protect and that's it!
@CatacombKidd5 жыл бұрын
That’s all well and good. I suppose I’ll be one of them and add a comment that you might find slighted and back handed, but will only help other people trying this... He never cleaned the surface before painting. Not to mention, just before the scuffing, he used a polishing compound. That stuff sticks around a long while, and paint isn’t going to adhere well to it. Acetone, mineral spirits, even rubbing alcohol. Just oils from your hands alone can contaminate a paint job. Have to clean it before applying paint. Looks decent now, but unfortunately, his clear is going to be chipping and peeling in no time at all. Maybe he did but didn’t show it, or said he did, and I didn’t catch it...
@hamzak47304 жыл бұрын
CatacombKidd I’m going to attempt this. Not sure about the clear coat though. Is it absolutely necessary to use it? As there are quite a few diamond cut touch up videos on KZbin which don’t use clear coat... thanks

This is a superb demo, articulate and clear without any stupid music or the history of how the wheel got scuffed!!!!!! Just two things please, can i not just use my DA sander instead of a drill? and I struggle to find such high grit discs, they all tend to only go up to 240. I currently have a 2010 Golf match where the diamond faces have tarnished and also a 2012 Nissan Quashqai, again with corroded faces. Thanks very much, really is one of the best videos I have seen

good technique and lots of patience on display here. probably looking at 3 or 4 hrs work depending on depth of abrasions. I’ve done a few wheels as illustrated when turn around time was critical or replacement wheel wasn’t an option but at my $75/hr shop rate I check the aftermarket for refinished wheels before doing it in-house.
@dannypearson68155 жыл бұрын
I used to do this as a profession, good tips on a DIY repair, these wheels originally were a matt finish, to remove that shiny line between the old lacquer and new repair, mask off the coloured section around where you have polished, give it a light scotching with the grey scotch bright and spray a light Layer of 94 silver until the line disappears, then to the untrained eye after you lacquer you really won't be able to tell. These were the best wheels to work on
@jacksonloomer57743 жыл бұрын
I’ve got that shiny line, are you talking about MTN 94 Jewel Silver spray paint?
@dannypearson68153 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonloomer5774 We used to use colourtone 94 silver, I'm assuming it should be a standard colour code? Just a light spray from the outside feathering towards this inside, whilst lay flat it is quite obvious to see but once on the vehicle lacquered (especially on matt lacquer wheels) its hardly noticeable, especially to the untrained eye

I’d suggest that you use wax and grease remover to clean the wheel after scotch brite. I paint diamond cut wheels almost every day and will say that this process doesn’t work every time. This process is dependent on the depth of the scuff and the location. If a scuff requires sanding that is going to pull the finish up, it’ll show after you polish the sanded area. I like to clean wheel, sand, scotch brite, clean, card/tape, tack cloth, dust coat with a non-metallic on polished finishes, then clear coat. I’d suggest using a blender after clear coat to.
@MauriceNL12 жыл бұрын
Is Brake cleaner also good as a degreaser before clear coat?
@JaredBeaucage7 ай бұрын
Could you just put clear coat ontop of the scuff for a temporary solution
@bostonacoustic77 ай бұрын
@JaredBeaucage if temporary solution being that, you're just looking to seal and protect the substrate (aluminum alloy) from the outside elements in hopes of preventing corrosion, then the answer is technically, yes. However, you still will have to put a little bit of elbow grease into it and get your hands dirty unless you wear gloves, of course. 😉 You'll want to create a little cut in the substrate by lightly wet or dry sanding with a 320 or 400 grit sandpaper around the damaged area so that the clear coat has something to stick to. Thoroughly clean the area with a solvent like paint thinner, lacquer thinner, acetone, prep all, or even alcohol. Let dry, then apply 2-3 coats of clear coat following the manufacturer's instructions for time allowed to flash between each coat.
@bostonacoustic77 ай бұрын
@JaredBeaucage BTW if you do not sand beforehand, the clear coat will inevitably fail and wind up peeling away.

looks good, worth baring in mind as I have been window shopping for an audi a3 preferably with the same rotor wheels fitted and have yet to see one with an unmarked set and these wheels dont look as good when powder coated a single colour. It helps on these particular wheels that the machine polished parts sit out prominent from the painted parts so as to avoid damaging the painted bits.
@lifeslooker4 жыл бұрын
When you've used the 180 grit, can you go directly to 1000/ 2000 wet grit if enough of the scuff has been removed or do you need to go thtrough the grades of grit sandpaper to get the desired results? Great video by the way; looking forward to doing this on my Audi. Top man. Legend.

Jason Millanaise - It will take you forever to remove 180 grit scratches with 1000 grit paper!
@lifeslooker4 жыл бұрын
@@andygranatelli8809 Is 180 grit rougher than the 1k/ 2k grit? I'm guessing it is since you can use water on the latter to smooth fine scratches out. Correct me if I'm wrong; I'm a complete novice
@andygranatelli88094 жыл бұрын
Jason Millanaise - Yes, the higher the number, the finer the sandpaper. It seems like a lot of steps but it’s worth it to go up the line. When you get to 1000 and 2000 grit, you almost always wet sand.
