The biggest tip for people to remember when installing a freeze proof faucet is to make sure they are installed with a slope. The spigot should be lower than the back connection. The slope allows any water left inside, when cut off, to easily drain out. If you fail to do this, you create a trap that allows water to stay inside the faucet when turned off and in turn freeze.

RE:Question Everything. All true, except, Murphy's Law states "A freeze-proof, idiot-proof sillcock will freeze when some idiot forgets to unhook the hose".

I want to add, you make this stuff look easy, I get told that a lot, and I appreciate the fact that you caulked the boards that you removed. Those little things are what set you and I apart from those other guys, it's also why everyone keeps calling us back.

Dude, checking and replacing the o-ring in the garden hose is serious attention to detail. I don't know many others that would even check it, much less change it.
@dailodai95864 жыл бұрын
thats normal practice because after repair is made. before hooking hose bib back we always check to make sure o ring is seated and good condition and if not its always replaced

So if that were a brick exterior (solid brick, not the brick slices), would you have to break the brick out, repair the faucet, and replace the brick with a new one (or several)? I would love to see that. It would be a lot of work, but possibly doable……? Sometimes there isn’t access behind the wall and in my case, the faucet is mounted snug up against the brick so I can’t tell if it’s a screw-on or soldered (house built in 1965 and faucet looked like it may be original).

So i know this is the traditional way but after having 2 of the backs fail on me right at the valve because the solder on the brass part failed. So i just sweat a 1/2 to 3/4 male adapter on the supply then screw the bib in. If you suck at soldering they also make a sharkbite1/2 to 3/4 male adapter just make sure you screw the bib down.

It will usually leak when turned on due to the “plunger” or seat being upstream of the copper split. You will have no complaints until the weather warms up and they use the water for the first time and they notice the leak.

@optimusprime87x3 жыл бұрын
It might be worth mentioning why this happened, I understand kinda why you didn't(job security). This happens when you do not remove your garden/water hose. When you turn the water off with the hose on, water can not drain properly from the water hydrant, causing the water to freeze and bust the pipe.

Our faucet is leaking, its in the garage that was added on and the piping to the faucet is under the house pretty close to the crawlspace. I am a new home owner and I dont know where the shut off valve is for the water. The was built in 1971 and garage added later live in Heber Springs area Arkansas

@matthansen7364 жыл бұрын
I was looking at the electrical near the end on the video is the EMT conduit outside? Should be rigid or PVC conduit
@thirdayman4 жыл бұрын
You can run EMT outside, just have to use raintight couplings and connectors.

My only advice would be to get a dehumidifier in there even if it's the homeowners. Then you can close the wet area in and the air movement with the dehumidification will pull the moisturizer out of the wood and spaces.
@pipingcalifornia34764 жыл бұрын
Interesting. So your replacement valve was threaded, but you soldered it. We don't have this at all in California... at least in my little world. Why the threads? Is it just set up to be installed in two different situations?

Have you tried using map gas(yellow bottle) to sweat pipe? It heats a lot faster than propane so you don’t get too much radiant heat throughout the pipe.

Is that new spigot from HD? I installed the same exact one and it worked fine the first summer 2021. Winter came and went and the rubber bonnet was completely shot by spring. Pulled it out and luckily HD was kind enough to warranty it and gave me a brand new one last season 2022. I was extra careful not to over tighten open and close. Made it through the summer of 2022 without an issue. It's spring of 2023 now and I just turned on the spigot after a long winter. Turns out the whole rubber bonnet, spring and gasket has popped off and is stuck inside now. This will be my 3rd time fixing it. Very cheaply made imo.

I was hoping to see a way of preventing this disaster leak in the future. Just brainstorming some kind of water catch or alarm. If the home owner did it once, he/she is likely to make the same mistake twice. At least the carpet problem has been removed. Thanks!

I’m not sure if you mentioned it in this or the previous video, but is the reason the faucet froze was because the homeowner did not remove the hose before winter and the faucet could not self-drain the water between the inside and outside the house?
@TheHandyman14 жыл бұрын
Yes this was thoroughly covered a few times in the first part. Hose was left hooked up during freezing conditions.
