This is a step-by-step video with commentary on how to replace and alternator on a 2006 Volvo S40 T5. I am not a professional mechanic and this video is merely my opinion on how to make this repair. It is not advice, only me sharing my ideas and experience with you. I hope it helps!

I took my v5o into the dealership last week and they gave an estimate of $1800 for alternator, battery and belt replacement. I decided to do it myself. With your video and a couple hours, I fixed it for $600. Thank you for saving me $1200. My car wasn't a turbo, so it was a little easier than your fix, not as much stuff in the way. After watching this video, I knew everything to expect and it gave me the confidence to get it done. Thanks again.

512kjt do you know what makes the alternators on these go out so much? I just bought the car about 6 months ago and the alternator was just replaced and I'm having issues I'm afraid might be related. Just seems like a lack of battery power which it was replaced same as the alternator about 8 to 10 months ago. Idk I feel like something is making these die faster. Also wanted to ask I'm having issues w my key fob it sounds like it tries to unlock but just doesn't any suggestions. Just really don't have alot of extra cash since I just bought the car. Thank you so much for your video and help you help regular Joe's like me save so much bc it's hard to get by these days especially when you have shops charging over $1000 for an alternator

@@KieriZippedGnome sorry for the late response. volvos and bmws (hell all euro cars) have an INCREDIBLE amount of electronics. these p2 volvos (s40s, s60s, c30s, c70s) all run agm batteries for that exact reason. but there is so much electrical load on these cars that it is only a matter of time before something wears out. for instance, i have a c70, same generation as this dude's s40. my alternator started going and I lost power steering because of it (in these things it uses electric assisted power steering, so when your alt. can't put out the juice then the whole car pretty much suffers) remember, the battery is really ONLY used for starting. once a car is running then the alternator does the work of powering the car, AND recharging the battery. also the engine compartment is SUPER cramped on volvos. and high current + no adequate room for cooling = overheat conditions and overheat conditions = dead parts. for instance, bmw puts a cooling duct on their alternators for the exact reason of keeping them cool

@@hughneutron5303 thank you for the info 4real. I ended up getting rid of it bc it had just went down hill sooooo bad. The electrical on it was shot. Traded it in towards another car an they actually just had to send it off bc it wasnt worth trying to resale lol. Which I figured. The turn lights everything not working most of the time and even the brake system light was coming up. It had made 2 batteries bulge out in like 2 months it was going to b way more $ than it was worth trying to fix lol. Def dont recommend this 1 to any1 esp seeing how many ppl have had issues w this model.

I want to thank you 512kjt for taking the extra time to help us get through our replacements. I watched this video shortly after you posted it and now I'm back to do the job yet again. It's sad that my battery has actually out lasted the $300 alternator, but atleast I have this video for reference. BTW, when load testing the alternator (aka, old school test), pull the NEGATIVE battery terminal [not the positive]. A general auto repair rule: It's safe to make/break the 12 volt circuit by the ground.
@512kjt
@512kjt 7 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome, but sorry to hear you've got problems! And that really is great advice on which cable to disconnect. I never really thought about which one to pull, only defaulted to the one that had the positive charge. Disconnecting either one will accomplish the same task, but disconnecting the NEGATIVE terminal is surely the less risky. Good luck on your repairs! Thanks for watching!

But I loosened the plastic shield underneath the front of the car and there it was, maybe if you try that you’ll find your bit. Anyhow, great video, really helped! /E

I want to say thanks. With your detailed instruction I was successfully replaced my 2009 V50 2.4i alternator. It would cost me an arm and a leg but instead it costs $199 for a NAPA alternator, about $15 for Torx bits at Home Depot, and 6 hours labor. Mine is not turbo so there is no big airbox on top of the engine. However I still have to remove the elbow shape air intake, the oil dipstick tube to make room for the alternator out. The wiring harness is different in 2009. I had to lift a small tab with a tiny eye glass screw driver to be able to pull the harness off. The air intake has 2 tabs holding it, one on the top where you jab the screw driver in between, and another is in the bottom. But those were the only differences. Everything else was just like you described, down to the bolt sizes. I am not a mechanic but a DIY guy. I watched both clips 3 times, took notes, and took pictures before starting. You guys can certainly can do it as well. By the way, S40 and V50 have the same engine. I also found that replacing the belts is incredibly easy, not like the shop told me and charged a hefty price, and LOST several screws as I discovered when pulling the wheel cover. For 3 days now the new alternator works perfect; the warning message "Power system failure URGENT" disappears. Thanks so much for sharing. Happy Thanksgiving.

Fantastic instructions! Just finished replacing the alternator on my 2006 S40 T5. It took me all afternoon, but it’s satisfying knowing I probably just saved myself about $1000. The worst part for me was dealing with the lower left bolt on the alternator bracket and getting the throttle body screwed back on. Just couldn’t get a good angle.

Definitely thank you! W/o this video things would have been really much harder. I understood why you chose to remove the air duct - it was in the way for removing the lower bolts. Also, the screws for the air intake module were really hard to remove even when using the slim ratchet. There is a very tight space for any tool. All in all it took 3 hours out and in but the temperature was 70 not 103 F. So far the most repair I ever attempted. Thanks again!

You are welcome Norbert! I am glad it helped. Ironically, I am getting ready to do this replacement again on this car, tonight. It is actually my mother's car and she was having trouble with the charging system again. Took it to O'Reilly's and their tests show that the voltage regulator in the alternator has failed! Lifetime warranty, but I'm not happy about having to do this again because of their inferior parts.

I ordered the alternator from RockAuto and I found a DENSO 2100841 {#8603268} (Remanufactured) 150 Amp, that seems to be the original equipment. I hope it will last for quite a while- the car is 12 years old and it has 160k miles and from what I know this is the original part I replaced.

Hi, KT, just an FYI - When the battery cable (at the alternator) hit the chassis it blew an in-line fuse located in the battery cable at the battery connection. The fuse is built into the battery cable and the entire cable has to be replaced. About a $300 part. All in all, part + labor was about $515. Thanks to you, I’m still big money ahead and the new alternator and belts I installed work like champs. Again, huge thanks to you. At nearly 50 years old I don’t know if I’d do it again, LOL! My back ached for 3 days after I finished!

This is a great video thanks. I was unsure how to remove the fan belts as I was removing a cracked sump and the air compressor was restricting access and had to be unbolted and lowered to get to the sump bolts. A word of advice though, don't disconnect the hoses off the compressor or you will have to regas everything. You will also have to unbolt the oil cooler from the back of the sump and the rest is easy. Don't forget to replace the "O" rings in the sump (3) and the 2 seals on the oil cooler.

Best wrench video I have used. Our’s 2005 S40 T5. A few minor differences: 12 mm hex on alternator bolts. Could not access cold air hose clamp behind bumper. I removed upper clamp, flattened hose, folded hose, and tucked it into empty space forward. A little more space between pulley and fender. 2005 has both Denso and Bosch as OEM. Get the correct one.

The new alternator is in place and she is running again. Yay! :) However, I'm getting a whining/winding sound upon cold start. It only lasts for about 10 seconds but I can also hear it sometimes when I floor it. Sorry if this is not the place to ask questions, but I was hoping maybe you'd know what's up. An alternator belt that is too tight, perhaps?
@512kjt
@512kjt 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome, congrats! Sometime the actual turbo is audible on this car and it makes a whine or a whirring sound. Have you tried to isolate which area of the engine compartment it is coming from? Could also be the new alternator working to get the battery fully charged, if the older alternator was allowing it to drop too low on charge. I don't believe it's the alternator belt, since the tensioners are spring loaded and non-adjustable.
@R3IMYSS
@R3IMYSS 7 жыл бұрын
I am almost 99% that it isn't the turbo. =P The sound seems to be coming from the alternator area (perhaps a bearing or brushes wearing in?), round about where the installation was done. What concerns me is that the sound goes away after the car has reached operating temperature (definitely something to do with expansion and contraction due to the temperature change). So I think I'm going to take everything apart and slowly put it all back together. If the problem persists, I will make a video and share the link with you. :) Glad to hear it's not the belt though.

Myse Sawyer if I recall correctly, this model year had a break in the VIN numbers and depending what your VIN number is, that should determine which alternator you need. I would call a couple different parts stores to see if they can answer that question for you.

Hi there @512kjt ! I really enjoyed your videos, very thoughtful and precise. I am wondering if it is possible to get the voltage regulator out of the alternator without replacing the whole alternator/taking it out of the car. I drive a 2005 V50 T5 Turbo AWD and the engine looks to be the same. However I haven't figured out yet if the brushes on the voltage regulator are fried up or if its the alternator. What are your thoughts? I'm excited to try this first time DIY :) Anthony from Canada
@512kjt
@512kjt 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony! Thank you for the very kind words! I do not believe you will be able to replace any of the internal components in the alternator, without having to remove it. It's very tight in there and the way the case is bolted to the engine, you won't be able to separate it with it still bolted on. I've taken plenty of alternators apart but the trouble of sourcing the internals of an alternator, the cost of the individual components and the amount of time it takes to disassemble and reassemble it outweighs the cost of a decent quality rebuild. Of course, your budget is what defines how much work you decide to do. I'm excited for you and hope you can knock this out yourself with perfect results! Good luck and thank you for watching! Check back in and let us know how it goes!

512kjt so the voltage regulator is inside the alternator? Or is it on the outside screwed on? Just need to know which part to order if I can order the regulator or if I need to order the while alternator.
@512kjt
@512kjt 7 жыл бұрын
There were a couple of different styles of alternators and I had to give the auto parts store the VIN number to get the right one. The one that I installed did have the external electronics on it but I'm not sure there would be enough room to do it while on the engine.

Excellent video , gave me the confidence to tackle this job myself. However I have hit a snag , the hole where the torx bit fits on the alternator belt tensioner has been rounded out , so the torx bit has nothing to grip onto. Have you any suggestions on how to overcome this? or is it a case of just cutting the belt and replacing with a new belt and tensioner? Look forward to you reply , and thanks again for the video. Tony.
@512kjt
@512kjt 8 жыл бұрын
+Tony Schofield | Hey Tony. Yeah, if you look closely at the tensioner in my video you can see that it's almost stripped. I did that last year using an Allen wrench and realized that I needed the Torx bit. I thought about the same thing when I did it and the only way I could come up with was to drill it out and thread a short bolt into the threads and use that as the contact point to loosen the tensioner. It was pretty elaborate but it was the only idea I had. Luckily for me I was able to get it with the T50. I think your idea about cutting the belt and replacing the tensioner is probably the better idea since the tap would be pretty pricey for a left threaded bolt. Sorry I don't have anything better!

+512kjt Hi there , thanks for the reply. I have managed to get round this by popping off the center cap on the tensioner pulley wheel and inserting the thin end of a long file into the bolt in the middle of the pulley wheel , then I levered against the inner wheel arch using a rag to protect the metal. Was a struggle but it did the job , was harder getting the belt back on , but we're now up and running. Thanks again.

Hey, KT, I did the job a couple of days ago but screwed up and didn’t disconnect the battery first. The battery to alternator cable arched on the car frame and now the car won’t start (no crank, just a couple clicks). The lights, radio, blower work but the the car doesn’t start. I think it has to be a fuse or fusible link but have no idea where to look. Any thoughts?
@512kjt
@512kjt 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know of any fuses or breakers that would lock out the starter. That doesn't mean there isn't one, it just means I don't know of one. LOL If it's clicking, is the sound coming from a relay or is it clicking at the starter? Is the battery fully charged?
@kenlar74

Thanks for the reply, KT. I tested the fuses but nothing’s bad. My battery charge is most likely a bit low. I have it scheduled to be towed to a shop on Tuesday but thought if there was something I could try before then I would. I figure even if my error costs $500, I’m still $1300 in the black, LOl!

Hopefully you got one of the good ones! The one I have now is throwing the POWER SYSTEM SERVICE warning or whatever it is, but it's only because it's dropping below 13.8volts. It never goes below 13.5v but the Volvo charging system is so sensitive that any variance greater than 0.2V will trip the warning. It's likely the voltage regulator in the alternator being slightly out of spec, but so far it's still running and charging and the warning goes off after a minute or two. The car is a blast to drive. It's my mother's, but she bought a 2017 Kia Soul and I've been driving the S40 to shake out the bugs so she can sell it. Drop back by if you have any issues and leave a comment so others that may be reading can learn from your experience! Thanks for the feedback and congrats on doing it yourself (with your bro-in-law)!
