I was a brake, exhaust, suspension mechanic for many years. I was always taught, and have done so so since, to clamp off the rubber brake line coming from the steel line junction to the caliper with a hose clamp swivel jaw pliers and then open the bleeder screw before you try to compress the piston(s) in the caliper. This does a couple things. One, it verifies the bleeder screws are able to be opened when its time to bleed the brakes. Two, it verifies the calipers are in good shape and not over extended. In some cases your pads and rotors become so worn the caliper pistons get pushed too far out of the bore and will not retract. You cannot put new pads or rotors on if the pistons don't retract. Having the bleeder open removes the back pressure in the caliper so you can push the pistons back easily with the method in the video. You will lose some brake fluid but its only from what is in the caliper and bleeding process will take care of that. Having the hose clamp swivel jaw on the rubber supply line prevents air getting pushed back into the line and fluid leaking while your bleeder is open. It remains on until reassembly is done and the bleeder screw has been closed. Remove it before bleeding the system

On the 2003 S10 you would need to remove the dust cover, cotter pin, nut and bearings. We do carry a disk brake and pad kit on our website with FREE SHIPPING Part Number: 1ABFS00327 888-844-3393 1aauto.com

The shop I go to wants to charge me 350 for both front rotor replacements. (the pads are still almost new) This is going to save me a lot of money.

You could do this yourself. Do not give them $350 👀

@akondick We currently do not have a video that shows that particular repair. If you have a Chiltons or a Haynes manual, they should tell you how make that repair. We carry the Haynes manuals for most vehicles on our website 1aauto.com

@eisg You may want to check the fuses to see if one is blown that powers the display.

You would want to check the fluid before and after you pump the brakes to make sure it does not come down rapidly like you would see if you were losing fluid from a leaking caliper or line.

@miguelzepeda20 It could be the added weight of the trailer. You may want to check to see if the trailer has electric brakes,to help you stop.

If you follow this video, it will show you how to properly do the brakes on your truck, if it's an S10 Blazer.

The rear should be pretty much the same. the only real difference would be if you can't compress the rear caliper and you need to turn it down with a caliper tool on the backside of the caliper. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

@itavio Whoever scanned the code should be able to tell you what it's pointing to. You could also try to use Google to see if there's something that corresponds with it.

Is this truck equipped with a ABS system? wouldn't it be better to block off the hose with a clamp and open up the bleeder to push the piston in? in my part of the country (northeast) we have a lot of rust and salt is used on the road to melt ice and snow so we use never seize .we put that on the back of the rotors and the Hub to make sure they don't rust together and also pins and bolts of the caliper adapter and the pins and slides on the caliper and caliper adapter. (what you call a bracket)

Great video! I have a couple of questions. Is it also important to check the brake fluid? If so, would you do this before or after you pump the brakes? Also, should I expect the process for my 2002 GMC Sonoma (extended cab) to be substantially the same as for the 2003? Thanks!

Got a question ... I have a 1999 Chevy Blazer LS 4wd w/ all wheel disc brakes. Is the process about the same for the rear as it for the front or how is it different cause I'm looking to replace the back brake pads installing new ones.

Do you have to replace your bearings when you change roaders

+Zachary Stevenson This is not a necessary step, however, if they need to be replaced it will be easier to replace them at the same time.

My 98 Blazer has ABS. I've been reading that doing brakes on a car/truck with ABS requires different steps than just compressing the piston back into the caliper. Any comments?

great video but at 2:39 you have got to be careful or where gloves do that in the wrong spot on the car when trying to brake a bolt and you could chop your hand halfway off or lose a finger!
