Great video and clear instructions. A few tips: 1. Spray down the old brakes with Brake Cleaner before removal. Don't breath in brake dust! 2. Wear eye protection. 3. Make sure your hands are clean (or new gloves) when installing the new shoes. Be careful to not get grease (or Anti seize) on the shoe linings). 4. ALWAYS support your vehicle with jack stands, and block the front wheels.

I'm at 106,000 miles now so when I do do the rear should I buy new drums or can I just change the rest of the stuff and be OK. I'm very easy on brakes 93,000 was 1st time I had changed if that tells you anything. THanks again.

When I took my drum off it was all to pieces already, what is the piece that sits above the cylinder that the shoes sit on? I’m trying to find whatever piece holds that in place cause it’s just sitting freely on the there and it won’t stay when I put my shoes onto it.

@@1AAuto man you need the skinny vise grips for little springs.
@petecesere269110 жыл бұрын
Good Video. I found, by trial and error on one side, that by putting the shoe on before spring and adjuster much easier to assemble. The short spring with the "catch" holding the brake shoe is much easier to hold in place and snap on without fighting the tension at the bottom of the assembled shoes. I did have a problem however with the adjuster bar coming into proper alignment with the adjuster -- still haven't figured that one out.
@donsgotmoney12 жыл бұрын
That is the next step. I had a friend pull the drums down, the shoes looked good, he even adjusted the rear shoes, still the e-brake is not working. Cable may be stretched or as you say, froze up. Thanks for your help

thx for the video! I had to make a puller to remove my brake drum because penetrating oil and a hammer didn't work. The problem was the shoes pressing against the drum. As I was pulling the drum off the shoes were coming with it so I had to use a combination of hammer and puller to finally get the drum off. Do you know why I had this problem and if there's a better way to get a drum off like that? I still have the other drum to remove but it doesn't feel like there's as much friction on that one
@getsomemtb74276 жыл бұрын
There is an adjusting wheel that moves as the breaks wear. If the pads are cutting into the drum, the wheel needs to be backed off. Thus why I am looking here because I forgot which way to spin the wheel from the hole in the back. Well, guess I'll find out shortly which way to turn it to take the pressure off.
@markcummins259710 жыл бұрын
Question to make sure I heard right-the shoe with more braking material is placed on the front or left side of the wheel well as you are facing it??
@1AAuto10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. The bigger pad goes towards the rear of the vehicle. So if you are doing the passenger side when looking at it it will be your left, when doing the driver side it will be to your right. Easiest way to remember would be the bigger one goes to the back of the vehicle. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

+C e Put the emergency brake bracket into the triangle slot on the brake shoes. Put the shoes on to the wheel Put the pins in through the back of the shoes. Replace the spring using the vise-grips to pull it into place. Put the adjusting arm with the new cup into place. Reinsert the pin Attach the shorter spring to the lever. Put the opposite lever into place. Slide the emergency brake separator back into place. Reinsert the remaining springs using the vise-grips. Put the small spring back under the larger lever Replace the drum. Use the adjuster to expand the shoes so that it will fit properly. You want the drum to slide on with a little drag

Wouldn't it be wonderful to do this job with your truck on a lift. Most of us watching this will be sitting on the floor, spraddle legged with legs on either side of the wheel, very hard to see what the heck we're doing. He didn't use brake clean to clean that brake dust mess off the entire assembly before reassemble. Make sure you have a catch pan under the wheel,, the mess will be everywhere if you don't. As well, he failed to mention the shoes are different. Make sure you pay attention to which shoe goes to which side as you remove the old shoes. You'll note the front (primary) is the shortest pad and the rear (secondary) is longer. The longest braking pad goes to the rear. This guy has forearms like Popeye, most of us do not have the strength to pull those springs far enough to get them off or on the pin during reassembly,, recommend you buy the proper tools for the springs. Best to get the tool that has the tool for R&R the pin springs on the handle, it will save you hours of frustration.

Heh, doing this job, drum had rusted and essentially become a part of the hub it mounts to, even with a torch it didn't want to let go... Fast forward, and now the new drum wont slide on, the emergency brake is partially pulling the shoes apart and doesn't want to release any further. I seriously HATE the people that came up with over complicated drum brakes.
