Thank you so much this is awesome! Ps. If you cant get the top retainer bolt off you can just take out the air filter box and get extension to get your socket on the bolt. You can access this from the top.

-- I really liked your camera & lighting technique, these are several cuts above other YT videos on Elantra repair. -- My 2012 Elantra developed a starting problem last summer. After I reviewed repair videos, I finally bought a cordless 3/8" socket driver. These are invaluable for doing this kind of work. For many years I struggled with conventional manual socket wrenches, and they were a pain in the hand & wrist for working in confined spaces. I wish I had bought one years ago. -- Access to the starter mounting bolts is much easier if the air cleaner and the box below it are removed from above. That process is very easy compared to struggling from below. With the air cleaner out of the way you can see the 2 large starter mounting bolts from above very easily. In addition, when I removed the air cleaner box I was able to access the entire + cable from the battery to the starter. I discovered my + cable was hopelessly corroded at the point where it connected to the starter. That corroded connection turned out to be the cause of my starter issue. I salvaged another + cable from a junked 2013 (which looked nearly new compared to my original one). The area where the + cable mates to the starter was also in horrible condition. I was able to clean it up with a Dremel grinding wheel so that it also looked like new. After I reassembled the starter, I have had zero problems with starting, and it's been 10 months. -- When I replaced the + cable I also corrected the loose fit the cable clamp had on the battery post by adding a lead shim around the battery post to make the fit tight and secure. Shims are commonly available at auto parts stores. This probably also contributed to the starting issue. -- Every good maintenance article on starter issues stress that the battery must be fully charged, the + cable must be secure at both ends and must itself be in good condition, and that the wire connections to the starter must be in good shape. In these Elantra models, the connections are nearly impossible to see unless & until the starter is removed. I wasted time and $ doing unnecessary things to my starting system when the problem was just loose, filthy and corroded connections at the starter level.

Great video. It helped a lot. However, I found that removing the top retaining bolt from the top of the engine bay was easier than going from the bottom. Henceforth, you can get a visual of the top retaining bolt. It’s a tight spot, but someone with big hands can get in the spot.

My 2013 Elantra starts very sluggish like a weak battery, for the past year. New battery (also had the battery tested). The battery terminal connections are clean and tight. I removed and cleaned the grounding strap connections. No change. Might it be the power connection to the starter motor? If I remove the starter motor and have it tested, is it simply start or no start, or is there an analyzer that might tell me something? If I need to replace the starter, I'll be using your fantastic video!

Great video! When putting new one into housing, do you slide in or slide and rotate in? I haven’t been able to get in back in😬 Any additional insight would be appreciated!!

Does the signal wire have a snap or a release you need to press, etc? Or does it just pull off?
@HowIFixedIt Жыл бұрын
The signal wire is a plug in with pressing release clip. Press release clip to remove. I hope this helps. I appreciate the feedback 👍

I'm not a mechanic. When I need to fix something for the first time, I check my local Pull-a-part to see if they have a similar junked model on their lot. Then I visit the lot to practice on the junker. When my 2012 Elantra developed a starter problem, I found a junked 2013 Elantra that already had parts removed from the front of the engine bay. I was able to easily see how the starter was bolted on. I practiced removing it and replacing it. I also noticed the + battery cable on the junker was pristine compared to the one on my car, so I bought it and used it to in my own car. My starter issue turned out to be solely due to dirty, corroded & uneven connections between the + cable and the starter itself.

Hey man , Informative video. Thank you Alot. I have a question, My 2012 Hyundai Elantra 1.8L GLS is not starting. It Runs perfectly fine, but one fine morning just wont start. All i hear is 1 click from Engine Bay, and nothing happens then. I had replaced my battery 6 months ago (650CCA), and still charged it using a battery charger , tried it again, still my car wont start. What shall i do ? Also, Do you know any good Mechanic in New Jersey? My zip Code is 07087. ( I also did Sub of yr channel, even before i completed the video , good work man.)
@HowIFixedIt Жыл бұрын
Hey, thank you for the kind words. In most cases if you have replaced the battery and it clicks. The starter is bad. You can take the starter out and have it tested at a parts store for free. But you do have to remove it and take it to them. Low charged battery. Faulty starter or even seized engine can cause a click during start up. You can turn the crank bolt with a wrench to check if the engine is seized. Test the battery at the part store and starter. More than likely you will need the starter replacement. I hope this helps 👍
