How to replace Valve Covers on a 5.7 Hemi (2006 Dodge Ram)

This is a short tutorial on how to replace the valve cover gasket on a 5.7 hemi, or any 3rd gen hemi. This one is on a 2006 Dodge Ram.

I removed the EGR tube and resonator box to do mine on my '07 1500. I was able to get a torque wrench on all of the 8mm bolts expect for the one by the firewall closest to the brake booster. Make sure to replace the grommets on the valve cover bolts or it'll still leak. I learned that lesson on my PT Cruiser. The valve cover gasket on the PT was way easier to do than my Dodge. I recommend cleaning the gasket groove on the valve cover with Q-Tips and rubbing alcohol and the top of the cylinder head with carburetor cleaner and rags. Also, it's a good idea to blow the dirt off the engine with compressed air before removing the valve covers.

Thanks man, this helped for sure, only thing i would suggest for people doing this job, get some gasket adhesive to hold the gasket to the underside of the cover while you position it. And check the stud-bushings (the rubber things on the valve cover studs, proper name i am told is valve-cover-stud-grommets) since if these are bad the cover will still leak after all this work and you will be really really mad - ask me how i know - yeah that's it. new stud-bushings worked the second time i did the job. hope i save someone from repeating my mistake. appreciated the time you took to show the job and post this. thanks again. stay safe.

Yup, you aren't lying about the valve cover stud grommets...I believe mine have started to leak from not being replaced when I changed my valve cover gaskets a couple years ago. I just couldn't find them at the time but now I found them online so now got a job to do again 😏

@@MichaelGibson1 I don't remember exactly but it was either Amazon or eBay. I don't believe they were the exact rubber grommets bcuz they looked slightly different than the original one's... They also held up for a while too but now a few of them seem to be seaping oil again 🤦😩

Also when you have the valve cover off flush out the areas where the pcv valve over time may have transfered excess oil through your valve cover. If your vehicle smokes white on start up you will need a new pcv valve and clean the channel where oil could flow through your valve cover. 👍

Having the same issue on my Challenger and noticed oil in the plug holes on the cylinder with the miss. Have tried new plugs, swapping coil packs, swapping injectors, testing for spark. Maybe its just a gasket. Lets hope. If not that then mine is probably a lifter too

Technically yes and there is a sequence. Unfortunately I can’t post the diagram here but you can google 5.7 hemi valve cover torque specs and do it. I usually just feel it out by hand on something like valve covers but if you wanna do it the 100% correct way then a torque wrench should do it

I'm doing my valve covers tomorrow and I just check the specs 80m lbs. starting from the center from top to bottom on a crisscross pattern hope it is still useful

If you’re referring to the ones on the valve cover studs, I just pulled up on it and wiggled it and it came out. Not sure if there’s a correct method of doing it but it worked for me. Hope it helps

It was still misfiring after the gaskets because you didn't replace the spark plugs and maybe even coil for that cylinder 8

Nope I swapped plugs and coils, checked injector pulse and voltage, all of it. Bad lifter, it’s been replaced and running good since lifter was replaced

Thanks for the video. If it’s the lifters, do you know how to fix that issue? I have cylinder 1 misfire. Not sure what’s causing it….

If you have already checked the basics such as the spark plugs and coil packs (swapping them around). Then the next thing I’d is looking at your wiring and make sure you’re getting power to your coils and injector for cylinder 1. You can use a probe or even a multimeter for this. If you use a multimeter then compare your results to the others. If all checks out then I would check compression on cylinder 1 and compare to the rest as well. If it’s significantly low then I’d pull the head off and inspect everything, most likely replace the lifters but once you have the head off if there’s another issue you’ll definitely see it

@@inlandspeed6670 than you for the quick response. I thought new plugs and packs would fix the issue but didn’t do anything. When I found out there was oil on some of the plugs, the next logical step would be valve cover gaskets and plug rings….don’t know if that’s the solution though. Or I’ll go with your advice and check injector. Just so frustrated with this engine. Removing the plugs and packs was hard enough. And the thought of removing the valve cover gasket makes me want to run the truck off a cliff. You’re basically reaching under the dash. But thanks for the information.

So on my 07 ram when it's in normal warm temperature it smokes on drivers side of engine and truck doesn't over heat! So maybe the gasket on velve cover is no good or maybe bolts are not torqued well! Idk but when I asked people why it would be smoking like that. The same answer I'd get is maybe vevle cover is not tightened well or maybe gaskets are worn!!

Does it smell like burnt oil when it’s running?i feel like it would have to be a good amount of oil for it to be smoking a lot. I’d check the oil levels and see if you find any leaks visually

It’s oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold. I’m doing mine right now and had the same issue. Don’t overtighten or strip that back bottom stud though because you’ll have to pull the head and have that hole re-drilled and helicoiled. Previous owners stripped it when they did the gaskets which is why it was leaking and when I backed the stud out the threads came right out with it. Pain in the rear so just make sure you do it right the first time to avoid having to pull the head to re-tap it.

I don’t remember how long it took but it was only a little bit longer than the passenger side. Reason being the brake booster was in the way so you have to get creative with the extensions and ur ratchet but not bad

In this case no, i suggest pulling the spark plug first on whichever cylinder is misfiring and checking to see if it’s oily. For this truck it’s actually a bad lifter

I think I left them in which was my mistake, you should pull the plug on the misfiring cylinder first to see if the valve cover gasket is actually the issue. If it’s oily then it’s most likely your issue but if not, then it could be something else

It actually can through the little o-ring seals. If o ring goes bad it’ll leak oil through and make its way into the spark plug wells and mess with the spark. I realize this wasn’t the fix for this truck and I should’ve checked the spark plug for oil leaking into it before taking the valve cover off. So that’s why I just decided for this to Be a walkthrough of replacing the gasket incase anybody needed it 👍
