How to replace VVT solenoid on a 2011-2014 5.7 hemi Charger/Challenger (P0016 & P000B codes)

So you got a check engine light, and now you're here. Fear not! P0016 & P000B codes may seem scary at first, but it may be as simple as a clogged/faulty VVT solenoid. Try this yourself before you spend big $$ at a mechanic to replace your timing chain and timing chain accessories.

Should I swap out the camshaft sensor as well?

@@AngelDaceo You could. It's the easiest thing in the world to replace. For these specific codes I'd recommend doing the VVT solenoid first, but there is no harm in also doing the camshaft position sensor👍

​@@V.6IX If youre still having this issue I'd recommend trying the camshaft position sensor. Only other thing that might cause this other than that is the wrong oil type, or bad timing chain/gear.

The mechanic said those codes p000b and p0016 had to do the coolant sensor oil change then found it was vvt solenoid. My car wouldnt go past 3800 rpm or at least shift at that point. My hemi wont hemi if i floor it. Is that what happened to yours?

You're right on the money. It would basically "redline" at around 3800 rpm and would not shift until I eased up on the trottle. It was also idling poorly for me; it sounded more choppy than usual.

Yes, I had two codes, P0016 and P000B.

​@@B-cl5ozIf I'm not mistaken, p3449 is for the MDS solenoid for cylinder #6. I had a similar issue where I got the code p3425, which is for the MDS solenoid for cylinder #4. I replaced all 4 solenoids and still had the code. It turns out that it was the "jumper wire", which is the name of the harness that connects to the MDS solenoids/VVT solenoid. Swapped it out for a new one and boom, no more code. VVT solenoid adjusts the timing of the valves, MDS solenoids prevent the valves from opening entirely by deactivating 8 out of the 16 lifters.
