Get full value from the "inbox" toner cartridges that arrive with a new printer.
Try this method on the following printers:
DCP-L3510cdw, DCP-L3550cdw
HL-L3210cw, HL-L3230cdw, HL-L3270cdw
MFC-L3710cw, MFC-L3730cdn, MFC-L3750cdw, MFC-L3770cdw
Run cartridges until they're truly empty before refilling them.

Update for 2023: I confirmed for this exact model that the button sequence is back and cancel at the same time and then back once more. I had to reset all four cartridges. I did the reset in the menu BUT the part the video doesn't show is I had to then remove the cartridges and put them back in. And just a side note, I work for a school and was just cleaning the drum and rollers using the green slides due to some print quality issues. I've been buying genuine cartridges so this was a nice time suck to deal with during the busy grad season. Thanks to this video it wasn't too long of a delay.

I have the 3210cw and I did this and it reset the black all the colours where low i repeated to reset each one and it works perfect. Just reset my Magenta cartridge after getting into Error State. Worked 100% Just the Cyan cartridge left to go. And still printing in colour is perfect. I print mainly black and white. It peaves me to know how companies like HP just milk consumers more and more.

I got around this by installing new cartridge and put back old one but when old one finished 2nd time my new one show its empty... so this is amazing. I print mostly black with few colour but they finish working after 1000 pages doesn't matter if you use 5% of cartridge. Bless you

Thank you! As Tomasz Bzymek advised, hit the two buttons simultaneously, and then quickly follow up with a hit on the Cancel button. That did the trick for me.

Very useful info, thanks! The trick is to press the Cancel (Clear*) button very slightly ahead of the Back (Stop/Exit*) button. This method works on my DCP L3510CDW*, using at the most ONLY TWO attempts before the successful "cryptic message" is displayed.

This worked for me. How fantastic! Imagine those OEMs trying to trick us..... Interestingly, it also fixed a non-OEM brand new cartridge that was being rejected by the printer. I did the reset with the OEM cartridge then swapped it out for the non-OEM and no problems. I'm quite chuffed by this. (and yes, I know this is a 4yr old video but if I'm watching it, so might be others).

Worked like a charm with the black TN-243 starter toner on a Brother 3230CDW. Some say it doesn't work with starter toners and some say it only works once. All I can say it worked once for me and I am curious if it will work in the future multiple times, depending of course how much toner is REALLY left. I am not printing much, but I will not buy a leg-and-an-arm-toner from Brother, when I had good experience with another old Brother BW (real) laser printer with off-brand toners, print quality was visually the same with a 10-20 times cheaper refill cartridge. Printer manufacturers need really to tone(r 😁) down their prizes, but as long as people don't care do be scammed this will continue. On the positive side, at the end of the day it is everybody's OWN choice to inform themselves if they are not satisfied with the current printer ink/toner price extortion situation, and to be honest that's a pretty low bar to reach. Anyways, thanks for the help, we people who don't want to take part in the scam game appreciate it a lot. 👍

Great, love it when these hacks actually work. Just when I thought that it didn´t work, it did work. I tried about 10 times when I got the K. TNR_STD message, obviously it needs a quite specific pressing these 2 buttons. I don´t know why it suddenly worked. Maybe pressing really exactly the same time or with only a few milliseconds apart, or holding it for maybe half of a second. Now I wonder how much pages I can still print with the black again 100%

It worked for me once. I tried it again the other day but as soon as i get into the "press up to reset and down to go back" screen i press the "up" button but nothing is happening. Its just like the button is not working. As mentioned in the highest rated comment, the button combination is back + cancel and back again after that for me. One last question: In another comment you linked to another video, where you explain how to reset the cardridge with help of the reset wheel (the white wheel) when exactly is this necessary and how can i differenciate? Hi there, I have this printer. It often takes dozens of hits to get the two buttons simultaneously (but I get it eventually). But a later step doesn't work tonight (it worked last time). I get the Reset/Exit message that you have at about 2:30 on your video. But the up button for Reset doesn't do anything. Do you think they've somehow sneaked in an automatic software upgrade which disables this button? Shouldn't be anything physically wrong with it, since the printer is quite new, and not positioned anywhere it could be damaged.

I was just able to do it today (May 9, 2020), so I don't think it's firmware. It took at least a dozen tries. I think waiting a few seconds between attempts may help. Good luck! Thanks for the video!

We can't guarantee that this reset technique will work for any given HL-L3210cw. You just have to try it and see. Replaced back because that’s what it requested, did your reset and it worked perfectly to get rid of the error and now my black toner is showing full. However the message saying No toner is still there but now it doesn’t say which color. All are full as well.

It's hard to have certainty because Brother could change it at will for the next machine that rolls off the production line. But the reset based on wheels, as we show in the video here kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGbTi4aflLCNl80 is working for every known customer as I write. Also, not so easy for Brother to mess with because it's the basis of how their own cartridges achieve the reset. :) worked on my 2390. Did the gear trick to no good effect, but the stop/exit and clear buttons when depressed at the same time ( done several times ) resulted in the reset toner menu. then press reset and ok. thanks for your video post. it's irresponsible of greedy corporations to waste our time and the earths resources in this way. Few have the patience to hack on through.

Hello there, I have successfully used that method on my L3210cw for years. It's been working like a charm every time. I wanted to do it again today and it's just not working. I get all the way to the "Reset" menu, click the arrow up and nothing happens. I cannot reset the toner. The "arrow up" button is working in every other menu, the "arrow don" button is working in this menu. It just won't accept the "Reset". I tried turning the printer off, resetting it completely, updating the firmware. Nothing has been successful so far. Has anyone had this issue before? Does anyone know how to solve it?

I had the same issue, always before the up button worked but not anymore. I tried the "reset wheel trick" and it worked. Please see the author's video how to do it. It is really easy, took like 3 minutes. I had already the reset wheel in the toner cartridge, so I did not need to buy them or disassemble one from an old cartridge. I just replace all the cartridges and reset the black one. Now when I try to reset the other colors and press the up arrow, it won't accept it. Any suggestions? I've tried to restart the printer but that doesn't help.

Correct sequence is BACK+CANCEL then within 100ms BACK only again a second time. Testing this out, after about 100ms it doesn't work. So you can actually do it quite slowly.
