China's rise is transforming the world. In this La Trobe Ideas and Society session, Hugh White argues that the most prudent response for Washington is to share power in Asia. Linda Jakobson and John Fitzgerald join him to debate this thesis.

Hugh White's observations are very cogent. He sees the situation clearly.

Rules-based order? How about the US subscribing to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea? It's one of a small handful of countries that haven't signed it.

Based on history , powerful countries come and go …when it’s time to hand in the baton to another rising country , we must be humble and Decent enough to accept the reality that another power is emerging .. thats the realities of life :: no country stayed in power for life , based on history of the world ..now china is the most progressive country at present and as the rules dictates , the one with money has the say ::::

To control Southeast Asia via Thailand, Japan has two prongs strategy: 1) use naive Prime Minister Srettha and money-making Minister of Transport Suriya to grant building military base and logistic railways in Bangkok and to Chiangmai; 2) use Move Forward Party to seize the State power to control foreign policy.

US rules based order is US arbitrary rules and everyone else follows the order. US clearly backing away from UN charter at a time when China is biggest supporter of International law. We see this in the US blatant and criminal support of GENOCIDE in Gaza vs. China strong support for international law.

Well, the West is made of 12 % [?} of the population, so if the rest of the world can accept what China can offer, what is your problem? In particular, Aussies made up of some 30 million, out of 8 billion or just 0.00375% of the world population; so your voice should be more important?

Has a question, was there really a need to know how to respond to China? Seemed totally unnecessary to bring about a respond and by the 8 th minute, he has talking and following closely what the ASIP wanted, in other words, this is no more than following the footsteps of the US. This guy has a real hang up about China and how far they had developed. And the real issue is Australia is deeply jealous of china to which they can never challenge. with. Just reverberating the same old ASIP 's anti China slogan and acting childishly like a spoilt child spreading US' s agendas.
