+1000 on the micro-nudge for curbs and manuals. I'm also glad you mentioned that bending the knees is one of the keys to nearly everything on a skateboard. I've been noticing lately that if I'm having trouble with the balance of a trick, it's usually because my butt is too high. Lower my butt, and the balance sorts itself out. It's nice to have that observation reinforced by one of my skating heroes!

I learned this a while ago and its so much fun when you realize it works the same way from bigger heights too - well perhaps dont go overboard with this at first, but from a curb to a ledge is totally fine. and recently I also learned how to seesaw up the curb, just go at it with medium speed and lift your front truck like for a manual, and then once your front wheels made it over, put some weight on the nose to clear the curb with your back wheels and the momentum will carry you over. its scary at first, but you will get the timing quickly and not much bad can happen there. currently I´m practicing to ollie on and off a curb and over small obstacles. a video about that would be great :P

Back during undergrad, I was in the skateboarding club, and the guys in the club taught me how to do this trick. It's really fun and makes riding around smoother and could give you something to work on when you find a new spot. I am hoping to ride off bigger heights in the future. It takes gradual buildup though. I will be trying your advice with the back foot positioning for a better ride off. Thank you once again !!

I'm not a skater myself, but I'm writing a skater as a character in one of my current serial novels so I've been spending a bunch of time on various channels trying to learn the jargon, the tricks, and basically how to do all this so that I can write it convincingly. You have some of the best instruction videos I've seen; you have a very natural way of speaking, you aren't hyperaggressive about it, and you don't make things sound easier than (I suspect) they are. Also, your cat teleported at 4:30 and it freaked me out until I realized that no, it was just a very clean edit.
@SarahParkMatott2 жыл бұрын
ah thanks David! I was a writing/book lover myself long before I ever started skating. Even though you don't skate, I really appreciate hearing that! Good luck with your novel. Hope some of my videos prove helpful. I know that my style/videos don't fit in as well with overarching skate cultural narratives. But hopefully the juxtaposition of the narratives proves helpful in its own way. Sometimes skating and being a "skater" can be very different for people. I don't know if you watched any skate parts, but that might be something to look into if you haven't since a lot of modern skate culture was influenced by early 2000s skate parts put out by big companies like zero, blind or girl. Not sure if you've dug down that rabbit hole yet 😂 also, my cat does teleport. She's here. There. Nowhere 🤷♀️ all the time haha

@@davidstorrs well, they’re actually skate videos, where each skater has a featured “part”. They were like giant skate brand promotional videos. So much easier getting down, than up the other side lol. Another well explained video. I tend to put nearly all my weight on my back foot, then push against the front of the board a little with my forward foot as I come off the kerb, so the board is pressed into my front foot by the weight on the back foot - if that makes sense - and is less likely to dip at the nose as you pop off. Even a couple of inches of air gap between your front foot and the board greatly increases the chance of losing it. As level as possible is the key, but that's just practice, and sufficient speed. For cracks that are too big to easily traverse, you can crouch on the board, hold the nose and tail and pull upwards and jump while in that position. It's hard to explain the mechanics as there is no pop involved, I'm not sure how exactly it works tbh! You sorta jump/push down with your feet, while still crouching - and as you "feel light" on the board - you use your hands on the nose and tail to pick it up off the ground fractionally, all while still locked in a crouch. It only pops the deck a couple inches off the ground, compared to an Ollie, but for wide cracks on an otherwise nice line at the park, I find it's occasionally useful so as to not lose speed to the crack. It took me a while to get the timing down, but we had a gnarly crack between two concrete panels in my local park when I was learning and that's how other people kept the speed on the nice line lol. The upside is you're low, so whether you come off the tail or go over the nose, it pretty much tips you into an instant roll if you land unbalanced. Low risk of injury. Although you might get squished fingers once or twice. And yeah, the micro nudge hip thrust, along with a little carving really helps keep the speed up, or give just enough momentum to overcome something that would ordinarily reduce your speed, like a crack or stick. I tend to keep a lot of weight on the back foot to get that balance point where it drives the wheels forward, maybe 20% less pressure on the back foot than if I was trying to manual. I found over the years that was the most energy efficient way to ride from A to B, though it's not a good natural balance point for tricks, it means I just lift my front foot a fraction to go over most cracks at speed. The back wheels tend to hang up a lot less than the front, especially with all the combined weight and momentum forward of the crack by the time the back wheels hit it. It's also good to be back foot heavy to go over anything excessively rough, keeping the front wheels just barely in contact with the ground so you're not forcing all four sets of bearings to lose speed quite as much, and especially when it's a surface that decelerates your board rapidly, as you'll end up stepping over the nose, but too much weight on the back foot and you tailslide or come off the back. One of my local hills is smooth asphalt, with people's concrete driveways striping across it and the concrete looks like it was poured and left, it's really grumbly underfoot and kills speed really fast, so the hill is an exciting combination of serious incline, really smooth asphalt and periodic patches of concrete where you have to really lean back as you hit each one at speed. It's good for fine tuning balance transition on the board though. I used to ride that way home from work every night and I'm glad I retained the muscle memory to ride it because it's always so dicey it gives me a proper thrill of euphoria lol. Your series of videos inspired me to get back on a board again, and I've had such fun bombing the hills on the way back from school run the last few days, especially now I've managed to synchronise my pushing foot and walking stick so I can get almost full power pushes again. I really can't thank you enough for making me think a little smaller again, and decide to give it a go and just have a little trundle around. Turns out I haven't lost skill or balance, I can keep up with the traffic going downhill just like I used to. Once a skater always a skater apparently!

Wow, so detailed! But yeah, I totally get what you’re saying here. And that’s so cool to hear you’re skating again 😃 I love scaling down. @SarahParkMatott Жыл бұрын
I guess I can interpret this in 2 ways! Mentally - if you're pretty new to skateboarding and looking forward to gradual practice, I would first recommend being patient with yourself. It took my about 250 hours of skate time on my deck to develop that "board comfort" we all talk about. And only after a few years have I really gotten good at doing stuff with "high" speed because I've always been timid naturally. The more time you spend on top of your board and rolling around and experimenting, the more comfortable and braver you'll get. Time on board will dictate how fast or slow this happens for most of us 😃 Literally - (still under the assumption you're quite new to skating) I would work on being able to adjust your feet kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHu2mX9phteSrck and single leg balance kzbin.info/www/bejne/op3UhIVqrsaHoZo Having these two basics will help a LOT when it comes to pushing comfortably and getting more speed. Also, skills like tictacs, endovers, monsterwalks and pivots will help a lot too. Because if you feel good moving around and rebalancing, it's easier to have that confidence to push faster. But I might have mis-interpreted what you were asking. Please let me know if I did! :)
