I enjoy your commentary throughout. I think there are some notes that I can take from this when taking a character modeling course next quarter. I still haven't really studied anatomy to understand have contrast, softness, volume etc. really should look throughout the model. Yes of course each model is unique but there are congruencies amongst all meshes organically that I still don't know. I have a lot to learn in a short span of time.

Great video! I'm new to Mudbox, so I love that you mention what types of brushes you're using to get specific details. So I'm not in the design field but watching your videos makes me appreciate all the work that goes into the characters in my favorite games/animated movies. The phrase "wow, I had not idea" kept popping into my head. Also the time lapse is necessary for these videos but can you tell us how long it takes to make that character either in the video or in the description? Keep up the good work!
@MethodJTV10 жыл бұрын
cabrita309 Cool, thanks cabrita, I'm glad that this video can keep non-designers interested! :) Yes, time lapse is definitely necessary, I try to capture the most salient points. When I was working on MK vs DC, my artists had 2 weeks per primary character (e.g. Raiden), that included textures and rigging, etc, (and working under a deadline). My guy here probably took 15 hours of sculpting/painting... spread over several months, because there is no deadline! :D
@cabrita30910 жыл бұрын
James Taylor I also managed to catch the Borderlands character design tutorial (posted on /r/gamedev I think) and what I appreciated the most was the creativity used to create the cell shaded style. I remember the thick black outline the characters have, and the video used an interesting/creative trick to achieve that look. I had ZERO clue what was happening 90% of the time but I REALLY liked the creativity/thinking outside of the box-ness of it all. Also it helps when the presenter has a passion for what he's presenting.

Ok so I am new to modeling and animation. I mostly want modeling and animation for games and cinematic cutscenes and whatnot. My question here is: if I wanna animate hair and clothes on characters, do I make seperate models and then like group them together? Also, what software do you suggest for animation?
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
***** I use Maya and recommend it, it is the industry standard. If you are talking about doing simulated hair and clothes, those are both separate objects that end up being simulated in Maya, on top of the basic character animation.

Hi James, great tutorial. I’m a traditional sculptor, but am taking the leap into digital in the hope I can create better and more ambitious characters. For modeling a character for a video game I just don't know if I should model the head in mudbox and the body in maya. Or just do the whole thing in mudbox. Any ideas?
@MethodJTV10 жыл бұрын
KudoBrothers I always model in Maya first, but either way works. If you do it all in mudbox, you'll end up retopologizing it after the sculpt is done. If you model it first, you probably won't have to retopologize, but you will be doing modeling (a technical task) before sculpting (the artistic task) which some people don't like.

Hey James, when I use the grab brush I don't get the same effect as you. Any thoughts? Also, my muscles aren't smooth, they look like stone
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
xXRejector88Xx for the grab, I recommend using a larger radius brush, usually with the strength reduced a bit. See if that helps. Muscles looking like stone sounds like a smoothing problem. Try watching my bodybuilder sculpting video, I go a little more in depth with my sculpting techniwue.

Have you run into the problem where some tools just stop working properly after a while? I'm using mudbox 2015 and after some time working on a mesh my pinch tool will start extruding faces all over the place, and my wax brush will begin pulling out faces as if the normal is way behind the geometry. It doesn't have anything to do with the brush settings that I can tell. If I make a new file, the tools work properly, so I think that it may have something to do with the model/file itself. When I validate the mesh, it says everything is OK.
@MethodJTV10 жыл бұрын
Fria Gram hmm, no, I can't recall that happening to me. But if it varies from file to file, it could be something specific to the mesh, as you mentioned. Try saving to a different folder and file name, and try deleting mudbox's prefs, see if that helps.
@CladioJulianoArt9 жыл бұрын
Hey james, love your stuff. Had a question for you. Just getting into sculpting. I notice that mudbox provides a base mesh for the figure. I'm wondering if there is something I"m missing to make my own base mesh inside of mudbox or is that not something one would do in mudbox? I'd love to hear your thoughts for those who use mudbox who want to start from nothing. I see mudbox has shapes you can bring in but I feel it would be pretty counter productive to try and go that route for the figure. Is there a method or way to make our own skeleton/base mesh in mudbox? I noticed in Zbrush a lot a lot of folks seem to have a tool to where they can draw a sort of posable skeleton type thing and then build from it. Would love to hear what you think!
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
Cladio Juliano mudbox does not have an equivalent to zspheres in zbrush. The idea is that mudbox is designed to be used alongside max or maya- so new, custom meshes are created there and imported in.

So glow in the dark effects can be done? Great. I'm trying to learn about the program while I save up my money to buy the disk version since I can't sustain monthly payments even though I would like to. Thanks for letting me know. How about glass and under water? Or translucent things like membranes? Or sky? Or if I want to "build" an RV type vehicle and want to use it as a prop inside and out kind of like a mobile doll house so I only have to create it once, can that be done? What about dust clouds or clouds in the sky? I'm thinking of doing 3-D illustrations for a couple of stories I wrote, so I need to be able to do everything I normally would be able to create as a 2-D artist. The program looks fantastic so far, I simply couldn't find any tutorials that showed me things I needed to know. Is there a less expensive place to buy the latest disk version other than Amazon? I can't find it on Ebay. The best versions available are over three hundred dollars and that's a lot of money for me and I'm not sure I can save up that much money yet. Is there a kind of flipbook feature in Mudbox too? Being able to animate would be lovely in such a simple 3-D program.

I'm a beginner at mudbox and I am trying to follow your video and everything you do exactly to try to learn from copying you. With the bulge tool and the wax tool I am using the same size brush and strength with the same type of falloff but the size or the strength seem to be a lot stronger and end up making my guy look like a marshmallow when trying to make the arms bigger. Is there anything you can think of that I am doing wrong or because the video was made a few years ago do you know if they have changed the stats for strength. Thank you.

@MethodJTV10 жыл бұрын
io sawkali kaci you can! Usually you build your base mesh in maya or max, and then import it in to start sculpting. I'll be going over that process in the near future, with a character I've built from scratch in maya.
@idontknowWhatTosay810 жыл бұрын
im using max... zbrush dont need any another program to do something in an other programm then take it on a zubrush and then sculpt.. no zbrush has manydiferent ways to start sculpting in like zspeheres are like bones.. and things..
@idontknowWhatTosay810 жыл бұрын
i could stay in zbrush but one thing i noticed is, mudbox has easey interface to understand.. but thats not enough..
@MethodJTV10 жыл бұрын
io sawkali kaci the easy to use interface is the reason I use mudbox. The program is faster and just makes more sense to me, and it is easier for beginners to pkck up and learn. But if you already know zbrush, there probably don't need to switch. Except for texture painting - mudbox has zbrush beat there, no question.
@MethodJTV10 жыл бұрын
io sawkali kaci what you use to create the base mesh is a matter of preference. I've always worked in a full production pipeline, so I'm used to using maya for modeling and mudbox for sculpting. For me, there just isn't enough precision in zbrush's mesh tools. But whatever getsbresults is fine.

You need a mesh to start with! So something needs to be modeled.

It's quite hard to create a mesh here, it can work on your objects but it's very hard to create something out of nothing easily like maya or Max even if your into inorganic components. what is the differences between Mudbox and Zbrush

How can I get to the sculpting tools section?
@MethodJTV8 жыл бұрын
it should be open by default when you load Mudbox - all the tools are at the bottom left of the screen

So what's the advantage of using this over 3DS Max?
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
+Arakmatzu Max doesn't do sculpting, as far as I know

James Taylor What's your opinion to character modeling? Would you use mudbox to make one from scratch or would you either use 3DS, Maya or Blender? I am looking to make a character that is completely new/imaginary and doesn't resemble to anything.
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
+Arakmatzu I like to create the basic shape in Maya, then use Mudbox to flesh it out. Those are just the software packages I prefer!
@Crnicelad8 жыл бұрын
Hi, James I cannot stress enough how much your tutorials helped me with sculpting. I have just one question. How did you create the teeth for this guy? I suppose you modeled them in Maya? I am mostly working in Mudbox and have Maya installed but at the moment I am still very unfamiliar with Maya and prefer Blender for creating new shapes. Thank you again for a wonderful tutorial series. P.S. I would also like to add a tail to the character to look something like this: vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/diablo/images/9/97/Diablo_3D_render2.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120808030256
@MethodJTV8 жыл бұрын
glad to hear! The teeth are separate objects created in Maya, yes. To add a tail I would model the character's base mesh to include it, then send that over to Mudbox for sculpting.

How many polygons do models of this detail end up containing? 100k? 200k?
@MethodJTV7 жыл бұрын
20 to 70 million, usually
@themike97_587 жыл бұрын
James Taylor so these would be used in feature animations more than games? Around what layer of detail would be sufficient to fill in the rest of the detail with a detailed texture?
@Danblukk9 жыл бұрын
I cant seem to pose my like you have, it gets all stretched and deformed in mudbox
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
Danblukk what tool are you using?
@Danblukk9 жыл бұрын
Just using Mudbox's basic joint and pose tools.
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
Danblukk yes, those tools don't work that well. I reposed my mesh in maya.
@Danblukk9 жыл бұрын
So you sent the high poly model to Maya and it could handle it?
@MethodJTV9 жыл бұрын
Danblukk no, I sent the level 0 over. After posing in maya, I deleted history and exported it as an FBX. Back in mudbox, go to the level 0 on your sculpted mesh, and in the layer manager window, import a sculpt layer, and point it at the FBX.

Vaso Petriashvili 2015. Not much changed from 2014, though. And most of these techniques are applicable to much older versions.

Vaso Petriashvili this video is done in 2014, I can't say for sure what the differences between 2012 and 2014 are, but I know most of the major brush functionality is the same in 2012.

Hello again Mr. Taylor. I'm making a character that has elongated fingers. however its hard to do because of their size and proximity to other geometry. I use the freeze tool so I only work with one finger at a time, still, its incredibly difficult just to make it longer and not make the finger look like a wet noodle. Is there a trick I'm missing? Also thank you for teaching me the skills necessary to make my capstone project. I made a self portrait of my body. www.KWVance.com/models

Your skills are phenomenal, but ZBrush is light-years ahead of Mudbox.
@MethodJTV6 жыл бұрын
zbrush does seem to have a deeper toolset, but remember it's about the artist, not the tool. use what works best for you!

Great video ! It's crazy how easy to make it look like but any chance of doing a REAL video for beginner ? Because it's hard to follow wich tool you are using and you did everything too fast, maybe the first things should be shown slow and then you speed up to go to the next stage. Too bad, because the video is fantastic but I have a hard time following your steps.

+Thranduil Mirkwood at some point I will do a sculpting basics video, yes.

As a professor teaching people, you completely missed the mark. This sucks. Have pride in your work. If you want to teach, you have to go step by step. This is an epic failure. As the first in a series, why did you waste your time if aren't going to do this correctly? F You want to do this right? Start with the basics. We don't know them. You do, good for you, Now teach us, slowly and step by step, like how the Hell you got the model on the screen, what file format it should be in, what brushes we will use, can this be used for movies and animation or strictly for 3D printing? You pissed us all off going so fast. This "tutorial" is the equivalent of me dropping you in a PhD program expecting you to understand everything I teach magically. Yup, I'm glad you know how to model characters and I'm not that impressed. Sorry, but this is really disappointing.

So don't watch it, instead of getting personally offended. It's just obviously not meant for you.

@@MethodJTV You pretended to know what you are talking about. Now you are attacking me for telling you to slow down and make it worth watching. You have a chip on your shoulder and can't a criticism. Here's a thought, do it right. Every comment here is telling you the same thing. TOO FAST and NOT SOMETHING TO LEARN FROM. Man up and make the video right or stop wasting peoples time.
