As one who has hunted and shot trap with a variety of SXS's since long before you were born, I can say with some authority that your presentation was largely accurate. Modern shooters can profit from the experience of those in the mid-late 19th century when judging the best stock fit. I think that many would shoot much better and more comfortably, if not only the drop at comb were greater but also with more drop at heel. Factory shotguns in general these days are supplied with generic stocks that, in my opinion, fit very few people really well. I think that you might even be more comfortable if your gun had just a little more drop at the heel. As to the face placement: Considering the shape of the face and the usual shape of stocks, one can see the German/Austrian purpose in often including cheek pieces to help to achieve more perfect alignment. I was happy to see that you have a very light touch and don't clench at all. That was great.

Excellent video! It explains WHY I've been able to hit so much better with a side-by-side! The method I learned and practiced my whole life with all shotguns is exactly what was shown here! It also explains why I could never hit with an over and under or automatic, except an old Browning auto. Quick shots are made with an eye on the target firing when the stock meets the cheek. Fast and smooth like magic!

Nice sir! You help me a Lot to understand this type of Gun. And your right! If i gently Touch, See a Lot auf rail, the Shot impact was way higher than i Expected. By light touching the cheek, i got approx a thumb between the Barrel and the Target.. I See the Complete Rail. Nice tips!

I started with a new Beretta O/U in March 23 and by the beginning of 24 had started shooting my great grandfathers WW Greener, then bought an almost unused 74 Simson SxS, restored the wood and fitted a recoil pad. It took over 100% of my clay shooting but kicked like a mule on 28's - but I hit more than I did with the Beretta. I recently bought a 1956 William Powell and son pigeon gun. Its much heavier and there is no felt recoil. My middle finger of my right hand is no longer bruised and bleeding from the recoil after a two day comp - I am in love. I have found the style of gun I need to buy more of :)

Personally, I think the "single sighting plane" argument is marketing hype, designed to sell o/u when they first came out. With a single barrel I can be off to the side a bit and not notice. With the "V" shape of two barrels in your vision, when looking at the bird I naturally point to the proper location. My 6.5 lb Spanish sxs s a delight to carry over hill and dale. I just don't use it for unnecessary heavy loads for upland birds.

IF the gun fits, then just look at the bird, like you would point your finger and this applies to any shotgun in my 70yrs of shooting them.

* I'm sorry, but any discussion like this should first center on if the gun properly fits the shooter. It doesn't matter what type of barrel configuration is being used, if the shooter's eye is not positioned correctly he will not be a consistent shooter. Having 2 parallel barrels in one's sight picture is more problematic for most shooters than having only one barrel. If the gun fits properly the sight of 2 barrels will be overcome more quickly from the confidence that success will be impart. The sight picture caused by a single barrel ( either an O/U, auto, or pump ) draws the shooter's eye closer to where it should be positioned, but given that, any shotgun should fit the shooter, and will result in more targets being hit. People feel it's easier to have confidence in the single sight plane picture vs. the 2 barrel sight plane that is seen when operating a SxS. In reality, if the gun fits the shooter, it doesn't matter. As far as this lower draw length business, I assume you're referencing shooting clay targets. This won't work when actually hunting wild birds. I also don't agree with your statements about the drop of a SxS being more than that of any other type of firearm. Lastly, if you're actually promoting these SxS as hunting guns, give the buyer the option of obtaining double triggers. Double triggers gives the hunter the best, and quickest choke selection method of all times.

So it isn’t pronounced oh-rye-on like the hunter in Greek mythology?
